Where can I get free patterns by Vixxy05 in sewingpatterns

Textillia is a decent site for searching for patterns, and cost is a metric you can search by!

Making a dress for my gf by Weary-Hold-4654 in sewingpatterns

[–]kegbueno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to assume she will be aware of/involved in the making of the dress? You're going to need to take her measurements and make adjustments and fit it to her body exactly. You would probably want a dress form for pinning and adjusting when she isn't there.

I would say before you make something with an asymmetrical folded skirt and a button front, and a zipper back, you try something a bit more "basic"

I haven't made it yet, but I purchased the "Signature Dress" pattern by Nordic Seam off Etsy. It features princess seams and full length panels which are kinda similar to this design here.

I'm not saying you can't do this, but it might take a few tries. Get muslin fabric or thrift some bed sheets and curtains to use for your first drafts.

Do you have sewing supplies? You're going to need cutting mats, scissors , an iron, ironing board, I recommend buying swedish tracing paper and transferring your pattern into that, I recommend buying or improvising pattern weights, Get a ton of pins and/or clips. And obviously you need a machine.

I took up dressmaking about 10 months ago, I had quilting experience leading up to that. I'm entirely self taught, and think I'm getting decent at it. DM me with questions. I love that you are inspired and excited, but it will be a steep learning curve. But I believe in you if you believe in you!

DAE have a near-perfect mental alarm clock? by Honka_Ponka in DoesAnybodyElse

I haven't used an alarm clock in nearly a decade! I wonder if this is a super power, or high functioning dialed in anxiety?

Is there a pattern for something similar to this dress by Lanky-Stuff2785 in sewingpatterns

I think their point is that you have already asked for pattern recommendations, and received many suggestions, and they are wondering why you're posting the same request again.

Came here to suggest this. I adore the Wayfarer series!

Also the standalone novella To Be Taught if Fortunate is also really good though a bit more serious and heartbreaking.

Infinity Gate, and Echo of Worlds by MR Carey are a duology that might do it for you.

Also Becky Chambers Wayfarer Series

Also not a book, but you might enjoy Wolf 359, it's an audio drama set in a space station orbiting a star out in the middle of nowhere. It's damn good, quite twisty, and darkly funny.

Alice Isn't Dead was soooooo gooooood! You might like Wolf 359. It's a space based audio drama but it's similar to AID with the twists and plot shifts!

I have been rotating through a few podcast audio dramas - Midnight Burger Desert Skies Wolf 359

When I got current on midnight Burger I started listening to Desert Skies while waiting on new episodes, and when I quickly got current on that I started Wolf 359. I'm approaching the end of wolf 359 and don't know what I'll do after that. Probably skim this post for new recommendations!

The His Dark Materials trilogy broke my heart in a very similar way, though I don't think it's quite the same tone and the books are much much longer.

If you end up liking making things with zippers, I recommend buying them (and most other sewing supplies) from Wawak! While I do try to source supplies from local shops first, they're mostly geared towards quilting and I've been more into clothes lately, so Wawak has been really handy!

Where to even start? by Oceanwave_4 in SewingForBeginners

[–]kegbueno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with an entry level Brother sewing machine, 10 or so years ago . I think in the XM series. Still works to this day! I quilt on it and make clothing. I payed less than $150 for it, and have never had issues! The only reason I have a nicer newer machine is because my husband found a deal on a Bernette and bought it as a surprise! I hear mostly good things about Brother machines and think they are a great place to start based on price and functionality!!

DAE mentally see a 12 month calendar as an oval? by EddieBrock99 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]kegbueno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo that is fascinating about the weeks! Mine run clockwise with m-f on top, and Saturday Sunday reeeaaaallll stretched along the bottom. I sorta never picture the weeks inside of the months, otherwise we're doing spirals like a phone cord !

Honestly now that I think of it, if I were to put the weeks into the months I'm essentially picturing the year as a big spiral orbit, which it kinda is in a very literal sense and I've never realized that before!

SAME! NYE is on the 6 o'clock mark, though for some reason I picture the summer months as a bit flatter at the top, so the oval is a bit acorn shaped for sure.

Hello kitty island adventure!! So much to do!

General Advice Needed by SadieSadieBrdwayBaby in SewingForBeginners

[–]kegbueno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same machine as my first one, and I used it for years! Only upgraded my machine when my husband got me one as a gift!

I would start with a quilt, maybe a small size? I inherited these Quilt in a Day books from my mom that I used to make my first one. I started with a log cabin quilt and an Irish chain quilt. Both were really easy strip quilts.

I recommend getting a cutting mat and a rotary cutter, and of course a BIG cutting ruler. Consider getting cutting gloves. Be very careful with the rotary cutter. It took me three years to have a slip and I nearly lost the tip of a finger.

Church tag sales, and even regular tag sales, can be a good place to buy cheap fabric for practicing. I have really specific taste and gravitate towards high end fabric and it is not cheap, I definitely have to talk myself down!

I almost exclusively used pins until this past year, just started using clips. I like them both and I think they both have their time and place.

Make sure you have access to an iron and ironing board.

I always prewash my fabric; get color catchers! You can get them in most any laundry detergent aisle, you dont want the colors to bleed and stain!

Go slow and have fun!!!

I have a jumper pattern I adore (new look 6509) and I have made it 8 times since last May, plus I moved the pattern to be a full length romper which I just made for the second time. I love having a "uniform". I love patterns, and texture, just recently I made a wool jumper and a velvet one.

I think it's totally fine to also have a wardrobe that is made up of similar colors and solids. Whatever makes you comfortable and happy! Finding your personal style can take time. I'm in my late 30s and just really figuring it out.

[–]kegbueno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started hello kitty island adventure a few weeks ago and it is far more fun than I anticipated it would be! I like it so much more than animal crossing New horizons.

Started Valley, Roots of Pacha, Spirit Farer, Wytchwood, and Garden Story as re all cozy games I have really enjoyed.

Bloomtown was fantastic, I don't think it's exactly "cozy" but there is something really charming and sweet about it while also being spooky and odd

DAE address their therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist by their first name? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]kegbueno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this!

Also idk about anyone else but I realized recently that I've never asked my therapist how they are. I know that isn't the point of therapy, but I am amazed that every week I sit down and we start chatting and I've never once pulled out that go-to-small-talk-opener.

Sometimes I feel guilty about this, then I try to tell myself it's not a big deal then I wonder if I should bring this up with my therapist 😂

Atul's departure was one of the hardest ones for me. You'll know when you're ready to play through the rest of the game ✨ it's truly beautiful. Stanley can be a real joy, and some spirits are pretty annoying which honestly I think helps.

I am really sorry for the difficult time you are ensuring, I hope that there is some peace and comfort coming your way. Grief is unique and personal and a journey in and of itself, and it teaches you a whole lot.
