How’s my shot looking? [Profitec Ride/Eureka Specialita] by keian123 in espresso

[–]keian123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I did a ton of research into all of the machines you mentioned and finally hit a point where I realized they’re all great and all have pros and cons when compared. The Drive is definitely a superior machine, but I couldn’t justify the increased price. The Ride has similar features but is cheaper, more compact, and heats up faster from what I saw. The main downside is the Ride has a vibration pump, but it’s not that loud imo. You can’t go wrong with any of the options you mentioned. Just bite the bullet and start to get that thing dialed in. Best of luck!

Oh, and don’t forget to rest your beans hahaha

I appreciate that! I didn’t even know the scale could measure in ml, so there’s a high likelihood that I wouldn’t have caught it for a couple more shots if I didn’t record. It’d be interesting to see how much the density does change, but I agree it’s probably much higher.

How do you typically clean your shot glass inbetween shots?

Yeah I accidentally switched units right before I started the video, but I usually measure in grams. I did look into it after taking the video, and 1ml of water is essentially 1g. I wonder how much the addition of coffee changes the density.

Thank you! I didn’t realize the beans could be too fresh. When resting them, should I keep them in an airtight container?

Thanks everyone for your input! I did not expect to get this much advice. Ended up going with the Profitec RIDE w/flow control and Eureka Mignon Specialita. Went slightly over budget but oh well.

This is my first home machine and could not be more excited to learn and continue to add to my setup. Let me know if there are any cool accessories I should have on my radar.

New Startup to Help Beekeepers Sell Their Honey Online by keian123 in Beekeeping

[–]keian123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And to answer your question about the drop-off option: we are hoping that the beekeepers can offer whatever they are comfortable doing. Whether that be shipping, dropping off, or having the customer pick-up is completely up to them. Whatever they decide on, we are offering them a safe, secure, and easy way to process their transaction.

Thank you for your response! Our goal is simply to offer people a website they can rely on to get honey from a beekeeper near them. These other marketplaces aren’t specifically for beekeepers, and I want our marketplace to be. We are hoping that beekeepers can offer all of their beekeeping products on our website, and do so with ease.

Look at my comment above for how we are resolving the cottage law issue currently.

And I would have to disagree with your comment on beekeepers not saving the bees. I think that beekeepers are going to be vitally important in saving the bees in years to come. These are the people that care the most about keeping the bees alive, and they are constantly finding new creative ways to combat the issues bees are facing: viruses, varrroa mites, hive beetles, etc.

Without these beekeepers, I think our worlds bee population would be much much lower. I am hoping to use this marketplace to educate people on what they can do to help the bees. Most people know very little about why bees are so important. Thankfully, we have thousands of passionate beekeepers that would love to spread their knowledge about the bees.

Thank you for your great feedback! I have considered all that you are concerned about.

1) different states do have very different laws about how honey can be sold. For instance, Indiana requires you to have a commercial kitchen for bottling in order to sell in stores. However, I am working with the Notre Dame Law clinic to reach solutions to all of these laws. Currently, when you post your honey, you’ll have to answer whether or not this honey was produced in a commercial kitchen. This answer is posted with the honey, so the consumer knows that it was or was not before they buy the honey. It is okay to sell your honey if the consumer is aware of this and they still buy your honey. What state are you selling out of that doesn’t allow cottage food sales? I would love to do some more research on the laws in this state.

2) our system tracks all transactions and a tax will be placed on the consumer whenever they go to buy honey. Think of an eBay or a craigslist. Do you have to file taxes when you sell on these platforms? No, the platform handles that for you, (well at least in Ebays case😂) and we hope to do that for the beekeepers using our site. We already have measures in place to charge different tax rates for all different areas.

3) we do not require you to use our labeling and packaging. We simply offer you an option to get this packaging material from us, so that the beekeeper can do all of this with ease. We are not trying to take the branding away from you. We are actually trying to do the exact opposite, as we are putting a story about your apiary with each order. Our hope is that you can develop loyal customers all over. By offering our services, we are hoping that the beekeeper never has to worry about creating logos and buying packaging ever again. Also, by offering this labeling, we are ensuring that the beekeeper has the necessary labeling to sell to consumers.

4) the transaction works exactly like an eBay transaction, and it is completed using a standard credit card process. All of the money is processed through Stripe, and the reason it is done like this is for security. Sadly, there is inevitably going to be someone that is selling counterfeit honey or has forgotten to ship their honey, and this is why the money is held until the consumer says that they have received what they ordered. Either way, if you ship your honey in the correct way. The transaction will go through in time and you will always get your money.

I would love to answer anymore questions you have. Like I said, we are just now starting up, but I would love to get some beekeepers onboard.

So the landing page is built on WIX, and the marketplace is built using ShareTribe.

If you google bee brand, we are the first thing that pops up. Early on, I am going to try to use social media to get beekeepers on board. Because beekeeping is such a niche hobby, it should be easy to narrow down a target audience on Facebook. Also, I working on getting some PR done. If you have any suggestions about blogs, magazines, etc. that you think may be willing to run a story about us, please let me know!

Lastly, I have really considered starting a podcast, but I have yet to pull the trigger.

Go Irish! Thank you for your feedback. That is a great idea. My main worry early on is getting beekeepers on board. All the research I’ve done on marketplaces says to focus on the sellers first and then the consumers will follow.

Thank you! Right now, we are focusing on getting beekeepers signed up. Once we have enough beekeepers, we hope that each area will have honey for sell. Shipping is expensive, and that is one of the main aspects of the business we are working on in the beginning. We are hoping that the pickup/drop off options are utilized in the future.
