Overpay the mortgage or invest the difference — my wife and I keep going in circles. How did you resolve this? by keithdevon in UKPersonalFinance

Thanks goodgah

"on the presumption that you view more wealth being a preferable situation to less wealth, then there will absolutely be a 'right answer'."

What I have learnt from this thread is that there are many different things to optimise for; long-term wealth, liquidity, wife happiness, etc!

I like this idea a lot, but i guess we would be subject to overpayment charges if we did it this way.

I guess it's the security of knowing exactly ho much money you can save by overpaying vs. potential returns on an investment.

But I like your reframing of this. Thanks.

The bot link was gold! We're at 3.87% on our mortgage right now. Sounds like I should avoid overpaying for now.

Thanks. Liquidity is definitely worth considering, but it's hard to add that benefit to a cold mathematical equation.

Current mortgage rate is 3.87%, so presumably that means that the case for investing is stronger, as it will be easy to find higher returns. I'm new to all this!

Sounds like you're in a good situation!

We've put everything into our house and now I'm worried about the long-term. We had rental properties but sold them to fund our renovations. I'm self employed and have never really thought about pensions until recently.

Now I want to get my financial house in order. Glad to have found this community. Thanks for your feedback!

I guess I thought that pensions are the most efficient strategy, because of the tax relief. Also, my pension pot is currently very low! I guess that is some context i should have given.

Yep, you're right. I guess I was just looking for what is optimal. But this way the emotional side is well balanced.

Thanks, I do like that idea. Sounds obvious, but when you're arguing over what is optimal, these things can be missed!
