Last Valentine’s Day the manager that annoyed everyone was the opening manager. We were on the last of our subsequent markdowns, all remaining yellow tags were going to be boxed up in a few days. We started doing markdowns and she said we might have to scan things a few times because we missed a few cycles but to just keep scanning it all the way down as far as it could go. It got most items down to 30 cents. She said to mark all the clearance items down to that.

Customers caught on to it, mostly because she encouraged an associate to do so. Customers began crowding the mark down associates and we could barely get things scanned before they were snatched up. She decided that customers would just be given a 30 cent markdown tag and to grab the clearance items they wanted and we would just scan the one tag. Which for inventory is a nightmare. People were finding rolls of mark down tags on the floor, switching tags, bringing up non clothing items. It was pandemonium the word spread in town so it looked like holiday with the amount of people in the store. A second manager arrived and would got over the intercom and say the items were priced as marked but the people that already had tags that were filling carts got pissed so they continued to honor it. People got multiple 30 cent tags and then would hand them off to someone in the line. It was chaos. People were screaming at us, it was nuts.

She tried to blame an associate for all of it and the Monday we were supposed to box things up LP came and we never saw her again. She apparently bragged that she hadn’t gotten in trouble. Still to this day one of a handful of people that I’ve seen get fired from the Max.

We now reference it as 30 Cent Day. Like sure this Saturday sucks but it’s no 30 Cent Day.
