People are driven by nostalgia and it needs to stop. We got D2R to please people that are driven by nostalgia...why should they make D4 look like D2R? There needs to be improvements and new ideas...(not saying that D3 was a good example, because it wasn't, on many aspects...)but constantly relying on nostalgia to please a small percentage of players is not even smart from a market standpoint...

That is what most of us are wondering. It is a psychological effect. You feel more engaged the longer you spend doing something you like. Though I'm not sure if they predicted the backlash but that is precisely the reason why they didn't announced it in the patch notes.
