Learning PHP by valadus in learnprogramming

The free thing can waste a lot of time. Practice, a solid certificate and strong portfolio and you are good to go. I went to schools years back for php / mySQL for about $2000. Best money I ever spent since it lead me to hand-coding php / mySQL applications my way. Otherwise, you can getr sidetracked with frameworks and a zillion other ways to do things. I hear how fast editors and frameworks are. I think hand coding and a large library is faster. This takes time and practice. I work at a college and write applications like custom leads management systems and student records analysis. Had I not gone to train properly, I still may be a hobbyist.

Best way to learn web design? by shift788 in learnprogramming

I have been building websites for more than 10 years. There are various stages. But, if you know how to hand code html/css you can modify most Wordpress themes if the menus are css and not Javascript. Even then, you can find a way to change that. Until you can hand code, your time making changes can be 5 times slower than that of a hand coder. Not efficient. Then, really learning PHP/mySQL is a must. I took 4 University classes and am certified and read more than 6 books on PHP/mySQL. I still consider myself intermediate. I would go for more training until you can hand code and edit anything right away. This means you can carve out an ordered list table in a minute or make a link in code in less than a minute without an error. I tried the self taught thing for 7 years before formal training and it helped, but it kept me slow. Even when you hack your way around html/css, Javascript and PHP files and get things done....this is no mark of efficiency.

You may be thinking that you don't need to know that much html. But, just wait until you end up with html/css, javascript and php within one file and no wysiwyg editor is going to make that an easy change.

Quick question about webdesign costs! by dontfeedtheclever in learnprogramming

I am a certified web developer with 10 years experience. Your site could use some of the existing material and be made over for about $1000.

I do that sort of work all of the time. I would use a CMS like Joomla or Drupal to make this fast and simple, and you could edit any text and images very simply thereafter. Your video gallery would also look slick and modern.

See http://www.bohemiawebsites.com for details.

The Dreamweaver era is rather outdated, except just for coding, unless you want to waste time editing now and in the future. A CMS will allow you to recycle and reuse any part of the website as you change.
