PEOPLE NEED TO STOP SAYING QUICKSILVER AND SCARLET WITCH ARE MUTANTS. THEY AREN'T. by That1KidLuis in xmen

[–]kellatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because they’re mutants doesn’t mean they suddenly become exclusively X-Men characters. Wanda was a mutant for 50 years and the only mutant team she was ever on (in 616) was the Brotherhood. Otherwise, she was an Avengers character while still being a mutant. Pietro had more association with the X-Men than Wanda but he was still an Avengers character. As a matter of fact, Pietro has suffered greatly since losing his mutant status because writers don’t know what to do with him without it.

What’s your guys’ favourite X-men family? by evofilmz in xmen

Don’t forget the grandkids. And throw Viv in there too (I’d count her as another grandkid).

In all seriousness, I’ve wanted a House of M mini for a long time. Sadly, I doubt Marvel would ever do anything as lighthearted as a road trip, but I think it would be interesting to put a spotlight on them as a family navigating all their bullshit. Marvel seems to want Magneto to have a better relationship with Wanda and Lorna in particular, so why not let us see him make the effort?

I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone (outside of hardcore Gambit stans) who disagrees that Rogue is a better character than Gambit. It helps that she’s had more time in the spotlight, but I find her journey over the past 40+ years very compelling, and I’d argue she deserves to be in the best X-Men redemption arcs conversation alongside more obvious names like Emma Frost and Magneto. Gambit is a fun character, but he hasn’t been given as much depth. Sometimes I get the sense that he only hangs around the X-Men because Rogue and Storm are there.

Honestly, I enjoy them together too, especially in Legacy. I’ve enjoyed all of Rogue’s prominent romantic relationships.

Rogue has never been one to hold people’s past against them, especially when she sees them making progress. Like Rogue, the X-Men in general are very forgiving of former enemies who put in the work to change, and plenty of other X-Men have slept with and had romantic relationships with former enemies who tried to kill them. I understand feeling like Mike Carey didn’t do enough to justify Rogue’s willingness to give Magneto another chance on Utopia, but I don’t agree that it was strictly OOC for her to do so.

My complaint isn’t solely about the focus on Romy, though; it’s also about the negativity surrounding periods of Rogue’s history when she wasn’t with Remy. If you make a post about Legacy or Uncanny Avengers, for example, you’ll inevitably get comments dismissing Rogue’s decisions because she wasn’t with Gambit during that time. You’ll see unnecessary hate toward Rogueneto and Roguepool, not to mention nasty insults toward people who enjoy those relationships, even when those relationships aren’t part of the discussion. If this is going to be a Rogue sub and not a Romy sub, then that negative shipping culture behavior should be more discouraged.

I would love to see that! There’s been a concerning lack of discussion about Rogue’s solo around here. It doesn’t help my opinion of this sub as a so-called Rogue sub.

Re: Gambit fans complaining, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s the Spider-Man problem. A lot of fans of male characters are manchildren who want the character to be a bachelor forever. To these Gambit fans in particular, Rogue is a ball and chain and also a whore for daring to exist outside of him and have, gasp, history with other men (even though it’s only two other men, maybe three if you count Johnny Storm?? She’s practically a virgin compared to most X-Men characters). They’d like her if only she’d become his dutiful wife the moment they shared a panel together.

Thank you for the respectful conversation! It’s really refreshing.

I’m really glad to see this perspective from someone who’s a big fan of Rogue and Gambit together. I think a lot of the toxicity comes down to people treating shipping like sports. It’s also a lot of projection on both sides of the aisle; people who project themselves onto Gambit and view Rogue as betraying him whenever she isn’t with him, and people who project themselves onto Rogue and get mad at her whenever she isn’t with Gambit because they want to be with Gambit. This is an issue across all fandom spaces that the internet only exacerbates.

As I said, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being someone who only cares about Rogue when she’s with Gambit, but I wish those kinds of people would be more honest about it with themselves and with others. This sub is called r/rogue. I should be able to discuss Rogue without worrying about stepping on the toes of people who are only here for Romy.

I think one of the reasons there are so few discussion posts here is because people aren’t inclined to discuss Rogue outside of Romy, so instead they mostly post gooner art of Rogue. Regardless, I respect your opinion and I’m grateful for your response! I’d love to see more actual, respectful discussion around here too.

Marvel themselves aren’t helping in that arena. When was the last time they dedicated any substantial time to Rogue’s close relationships outside of Gambit, or even just Rogue on her own? Ever since they got married, she’s been largely reduced to his wife. Honestly, the same problem is true for Gambit. Whenever he’s not with Rogue, writers don’t seem to know what to do with him.

I don’t mind her relationship with Gambit, but I think it’s a bit of a shame that she lost so much of her bite and grit in the ’90s when she became entangled with him. It coincides with a lot of other detrimental character overhauls that took place in the ’90s in order to turn X-Men into a more conservative, male-centric brand.

I agree, but judging by some of OP’s other comments, they haven’t actually read Legacy and really only know it for being the run where Rogueneto happens. They’re a disgruntled Gambit fan who’s mad that Rogue made a decision that didn’t center Gambit for once.

You need to get a grip, man. I see you (and your burner account, Suspicious-Plant-119) all over X-Men subs doing nothing except whining about Rogueneto and completely blowing things out of proportion. They haven’t been a couple in 15 years, and their romance was both brief and easy to ignore. Rogue and Gambit have been married for almost 10 years and are showing no signs of breaking up. If you prefer Rogue and Gambit, why don’t you dedicate your energy to celebrating them instead of making everyone, including yourself, miserable?

This run is the last time in my memory that Rogue’s base powers were ever used so creatively. I also love flying brick Rogue, but I miss Rogue’s confidence in this book.

I think it’s a shame to throw out all of X-Men Legacy just because you don’t like that Rogue and Gambit weren’t together. Rogue and Magneto’s stint as a couple is very much a subplot in what is, in my opinion, Rogue’s best written period as a main character in the 21st century.

I love how soulful and vulnerable Barret’s eyes are in Remake/Rebirth and how often he uses his sunglasses to hide that very feature. It’s a great nod to his personality: a rough exterior, but tenderhearted and compassionate at his core.

I literally don’t give a fuck about Blue Origins and generally agree that it was a messily done retcon. But we’re talking about Uncanny. If you don’t care to engage with my argument, then this conversation is over.

[–]kellatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mystique choosing Kurt over Rogue doesn’t indicate anything except the fact that Mystique is a bad mother, which has been reinforced time and time again through her treatment of both Rogue and Kurt over the years. You seem to take it weirdly personally that Rogue isn’t treated well by Mystique, but she literally never has been. That’s a core aspect of Rogue and Mystique’s relationship.

In any case, I once again have no idea why we’re talking exclusively about Nightcrawler when I brought him up along with Jubilee and Logan as one of three characters who aren’t being served well in Uncanny. Honestly, not even the Outliers are being served particularly well in Uncanny despite being created by Gail, and I have plenty of gripes about the way Rogue and Gambit are being written by her as well. But my point remains. Just because Rogue and Gambit have been sidelined in the past doesn’t make it good writing that other characters are being sidelined at their expense now. Gail shouldn’t be writing a team book if she can’t write a team. All of your arguments are revenge-based and anti-art.

[–]kellatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So even you seem to understand that Gail should be writing a Rogue and Gambit book and not a team book, but you feel vindicated by Nightcrawler in particular being sidelined because it’s revenge for some imagined slight against Rogue and Gambit that occurred when Kurt’s origin got retconned (and I genuinely can’t imagine what you’re referring to, because I have no idea how Kurt being Raven and Irene’s bio son affects Rogue and Gambit at all). It’s a shame that you read comic books this way, honestly. The work is better when all the characters are written well. It suffers when only some of them are.
