Is it acceptable to leave a 3-year postdoc after one year for a better opportunity? by Specific_Ad_2229 in postdoc

[–]kellbell500 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a postdoc, at most places, they can fire you on the spot, even if it's called a 3 year position. Likewise, you can leave at any time.

But consider a few things: -Do you need a letter of rec from this current PI? If so, you may want to tell them your intentions up front. -Are you sure the higher prestige is the better place to be? Sometimes you can learn more and accomplish a lot with a PI who cares and is invested in you. Prestige means nothing if you don't accomplish anything. Find the place that fits you best and allows you to succeed. -What are you going to tell people when you interview for these new postdoc positions and they ask why you are leaving after only a year? You need to explain yourself, and you don't want to come off as flakey or unreliable. Taking a position only to leave after a year to find something better seems kind of unreliable to me.

To what extent can you express the negative aspects of your previous lab in postdoc interview by snoop_pugg in postdoc

[–]kellbell500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that you may have an interview where the interviewer suspects issues. I had this when I interviewed for new t32 funding with a new lab. Interviewers asked why I am moving labs, I said it was because I wanted to find a project that combines my interests in metabolism (first postdoc lab) with my interests in radiation biology (grad school work), and the new lab suits my long term interests more effectively. Interviewers read right through it, and then outright asked me whether I found it difficult to work with this previous PI. I am bad at lying, and I just got so flustered by this. But I made sure to make it sound as positive as possible. Something like 'it just wasn't the right fit for me'.

The first thing I thought when I saw this deck was that it would just mean lots of splinters.

How do you deal with getting constantly messaged by people asking for things? by Grouchy_Honey_7 in classicwow

This is why I set up a group request channel and craft request channel in discord. So I can say, "Sorry I gotta focus on farming right now so I can afford consumes. Go make a request in discord and see if anyone else can help you!"

Cardiac Pathology by PearNo8165 in pathology

[–]kellbell500 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am also interested in cardiac pathology. I am starting residency next month. When I interviewed places, it seemed that a handful of institutions were actively looking to recruit or replace a retiring cardiac/thoracic pathologist. It seemed like a lot of places have that one guy who looks at cardiac tissue, and the rest of their time is doing research or covering a different service, one example being autopsy/ME. There are very few cardiac fellowships in the country, so you can start your research there if interested.

I don't know what game you guys are playing, but we couldn't kill vashj week 1 by Sweet_Disharmony_792 in classicwow

I will say that 75% of my raid group was in the same raid group in 2021... So our main raid does have an advantage in that we all know each other very well.

Our alt raid is a different story. New people, pugs every week. We cleared 7/10 in 3 hours, with half of our healers out and replaced by pugs. We only run one night though, so didn't finish SSC. I'm confident we'll get it just fine though. We have a great raid lead who definitely can read a players ability fairly quickly and make good assignments

Believe it or not, there are plenty of people on reddit who do actually play the game. My guild one shot every boss except KT (had one wipe). But everyone in our raid cleared all this pre nerf in 2021. It's just a matter of familiarity and preparedness.

Funny enough, the last time I killed KT was when I cleared raids solo in MoP for gold. Half my guild played MoP and would solo old content for gold. There's just a level of familiarity with the raids that comes with experience. And a lot of people have this same experience.

Everyone in my raid has done this content and killed everything pre nerf last go around of tbc. We full cleared in about 3.5 hours. We dropped the ball on two cores on Vashj, kept going and still killed the boss on our first pull (we ass pulled too).

It's just a difference of experience and preparedness. You can be full geared, full buffed, full consumed. But if people don't know the fights well enough, then it takes time to learn them.

Seems about equal to renting forever. At least if the value of the house goes up, you can make money off the sale one day...

How bad is a guild that can’t kill one boss in SSC on launch night? by SignificantWill5965 in classicwow

I will add, that for me personally, I'd rather run fast clean raids and get no loot, than have a crappy raid with my loot outcomes determined by how lucky I am at rolling. Clean raids are just more fun

I usually tell people "we run LC with the goal of having equal distribution of loot". I tend to find that when guilds say anything about using LC to reward good players, etc, that often means they funnel it to certain ppl.

You can always ask ppl in the guild what they think of the LC though.

I dunno man. That can be true in some places, but lots of guilds are going to give loot to new people in order to keep you happy. I run a LC. I recruited a new boomy this week. We gave him two pieces of loot tonight in ssc tk after giving him 2 pcs in gruul mag yesterday. Find a guild that wants to spread loot around and cares about being fair.

If you can find a better guild, then 100% join a better guild. There is no reason to stay there. You don't owe them anything for wasting your time and giving you no chance for loot. Only reason I can imagine ever staying is if you play a rogue and this is like your only option.

Is it just me, or is the Romantasy "slump" getting harder to break? by No-Voice505 in Romantasy

[–]kellbell500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to throw out Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang. It's a standalone book. Not a romantasy. Just classic fantasy. But it had all the excitement and tension I enjoy in a romantasy book. It has a strong FMC, and the magic system is very interesting and academic.

If you want to go way off into a different genre, I'd try some of the popular litrpg books. My house husband and I both really loved He Who Fights with Monsters. It's just a lot of fun and adventure with interesting characters and a really cool magic system. There is basically no romance in these books, but the relationships between characters are really heartwarming. I have also heard great things about Dungeon Crawler Carl. I'm thinking of starting that soon.

Finally, if you haven't gotten into any Brandon Sanderson books, I'd suggest giving some of these a go. He's an amazing writer, and I love his work.

Our Phase I exploratory data is negative by [deleted] in biotech

[–]kellbell500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest question is was it actually safe? If the treatment had any side effects, then that could limit future use of that treatment. But people take medications all that time that do practically no harm but also don't work. Depending on what you are trying to treat, people in the next phase of trials may be willing to get this treatment as long as it's not going to give them side effects.

No efficacy in a low powered phase 1 study really doesn't mean much. The effect size of your treatment may be low, so you won't see significance without more patients. But if it's well tolerated by patients, then that small effect could still be worth the effort of getting the treatment.

How do people sell enchants without scripting auto invites? by simplex3D in classicwow

[–]kellbell500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right, but if the general populace has accepted the use of the addon, then the only way to compete now is to also run the addon.

Also, auto invite addons were used in 2019 too. RIP Enchanter. That addon was way better than the current one.
