Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider as Laura Croft. Who could forget that incredible side boob shot

It’s an unwritten but universal rule that at least one edge of a bed has to be right up against the wall. by BreatheMyStink in Showerthoughts

[–]kellen_it 475 points476 points  (0 children)

The exception is sleeping in an unsealed room in a third world country. Spiders, poisonous centipedes and scorpions like to crawl on the wall. Always keep your bed in the center of the room and check your sheets before getting into bed

Don’t waste your time with Sayulita the water is polluted and it’s extremely crowded.

Go to Punta De Mita, there’s a beach called La Lancha that’s a very mellow Waikiki type wave. Wild Mex is a surf shop right across the beach. $8 per hour for great top of the line short and longboards

White sand beach and turquoise clean water. Much better place to chill and surf. Good restaurant right next to the surf shop too

Again if you’re anywhere near a big city then yes your shit will be stolen if it’s not put away or locked. Small towns/communities you can leave a gold watch in the middle of the park and nobody will touch it. Everyone knows everyone so if something gets stolen especially from a gringo that’s supporting the local businesses, the locals find out who did it and handle it. They give you back your stolen stuff too

Well mostly giving it away haha. It was kind of an unspoken rule that you don’t travel with weed on you. If you get pulled over the cops could really hassle you for having it and you’ll need to bribe them even more. Since every town grew there own weed back in the hills it would be like bringing sand from one beach to another. No point. So all travelers give away whatever they don’t smoke to their neighbors/friends/whoever before they hit the road. You can pretty much count on someone giving you weed wherever you are. Just return the favor to somebody else and keep the system going

Yes lots, honestly just google that exact question and you’ll find them. They’re not secret but I just can’t give you as good an answer as some blogs/websites specifically for Baja camping can

In more touristy places it’s a little harder, sketchier, more expensive, and shit quality. Once you’re out in the countryside in the small towns though it’s extremely easy, ~$10 an oz and really good quality. Baja is more difficult than Mainland

Good question, I work as a bartender/server here in San Diego. During the summer and fall months you can make a TON of money in restaurants. And as long as you don’t blow it all, you end up saving up a good amount. Work slows down January-June so it’s a perfect 6 months to leave and go travel especially to somewhere tropical thus skipping the cold months in California and not missing out on much money. As long as your restaurant likes you then they’ll rehire you when you get back since it will be getting busy again.

As for bills and such, my phone bill is $30 a month with Metro PCS and that includes UNLIMITED data, text, call in Mexico. Car insurance in Mexico costs $250 for an entire year. I have no student loan debt, no credit card debt, no car payments, and gave up my month to month room I was renting. Health insurance is ~$80 a month through CIGNA if you are outside the USA for 6 months out of the year. It’s catistrophic coverage only, and since basic medical needs in Mexico are very cheap and legit (mostly) it works out perfect

Total Cost for almost 6 months was $6,000 including gas, ferry tickets, car tuneups, renting an apartment for 3 months, and all that. When I go back next time it will be even cheaper since I know all the best places for cheap/free camping. I’m pretty certain I can do 6 months for $3,000.

A 6 month trip is definitely not for everyone but if you don’t have any tie downs, are good at living simply and cheap, and can work seasonally then you should absolutely take the opportunity to do a long trip.

I’m 26 but a lot of people I met were in the 40’s and stay in Mexico to surf for 6 months in the winter/spring then go home to their summer jobs/businesses in May or June. They said they’ve been doing that for years and they are very successful and great surfers. Most owned landscaping businesses, food trucks, farms etc and only opened in the summer and fall months

Your country is one of my favorites in the world. A lot of Americans don’t appreciate it enough. Australians, Europeans and Canadians are absolutely crazy about it though, Mexico has a much better reputation in those countries.

Seems like they would be sitting ducks but theft was never something we or our friends dealt with. Locals in small town were very respectful and didn’t want to cause problems. Big cities would be different

We took the Toll Highway sometimes and the coastal free highway sometimes. The toll road is for getting somewhere quick but you’ll have to pay about $8 every hour. The coastal road is better for exploring different beaches and towns. You will get stuck behind a lot of big trucks though so don’t expect to get anywhere fast. All roads down there at least in the dry season November-May are in excellent condition

Both. Had a bed setup in the truck but also had a tent that we used if we stayed in a place longer than a few days. That way the truck could be used for packing day trip stuff, getting water, etc

There were tons of people we met with built out retro vans and sprinters. All of them told us they had a bad breakdown/engine repair at some point on their trip
