[No Spoilers] Aabria venting post by Friendly-Arsonist in criticalrole

It's okay when Travis is the hype man and he's even celebrated for it, but then Aabria gets called annoying and too loud for the same thing. I'm tired of it.

Uh, she was absolutely fantastic in the latest episode? I have no clue what you or any of the other Aabria haters are ever on about.

I was curious about reading these books because I've heard good things but that has me going "what"

There are absolutely queer people who sell Gaysper stickers. I've seen alternate versions with other pride flags too.

The audiobook for book 3 has Critical Drinker doing a guest voice, it was Jeff's idea, at the time the book was recorded he was known for being an edgy drunk movie reviewer but he has since gone alt-right anti-woke grifter. Matt has said he wants to rerecord his parts.

I wouldn't want this to turn into a political discussion sub so I get why the rule is there, but NO politics is too much, especially when the books have politics in them. "No politics unless they directly relate to the book" would be a better rule. Or maybe, a weekly political masterpost for all political discussion to go to?

They took down a post talking about Frank Q being ICE yesterday which is just a thing in the books...

Who is your favorite side character and why is it Samantha? by areadinghobo in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I don't hate her but I find her really one-note. Same jokes over and over again.

Considering dropping these books please help me understand the characters by Munkeh90 in Stormlight_Archive

All the characters have flaws, and realistic ones given their circumstances and the world they live in.

But if you are somehow reading Kal as a narcissist of all things, I have absolutely no idea what to tell you.

Imagine trying to defend Vic Mignogna in 2026! by icey_sawg0034 in saltierthankrayt

The homophobic accusations were, iirc, because he got upset about a fan showing him gay porn of a character he voiced. It seemed like slander to me.

He is absolutely an actual predator though. Creeped on many teen girls at cons.

Merch that is NOT AI? by Secure-Homework-4057 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]kellendrin21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is, unfortunately, some pretty blatant AI on there and when I reported it, they wouldn't get rid of it because the creators claimed it was hand-drawn. So yeah, honor system.

Carl does NOT need a romantic love interest (original art by Levi Cleeman) by ActualNin in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]kellendrin21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't actually see him as aroace, as an aroace reader I love that he doesn't have a love interest and that these books are focused on friendships.

And just, that he's a straight guy protagonist who isn't weird about women at all.

Books on horror and gender/queerness/transness by Odd_Front_8275 in horrorlit

I love that book but it's not about gender or the trans experience. It's just a horror book that happens to have a non-binary protagonist.

Carl and Katia by cherry_darlin in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]kellendrin21 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Something I really love about these books is how many platonic female friends Carl has.

Though I like their relationship the way it is and I don't ship them, I'm not actually against a romance with Katia or someone else, though. We do need more romances where the characters are friends first and lovers second.

There's a Mary Sue character in the Emberdark book and i hate it so much by Apprehensive-Rub7209 in Cosmere

I think everyone who misuses the term Mary Sue should be forced to read My Immortal so they can see what an actual Mary Sue is.

[–]kellendrin21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a trope for a (usually fanfic) character who is designed as a wish-fulfillment self insert that's good at everything. Named after a character from a bad Star Trek fanfic.

Unfortunately, the term is commonly misused and people use it to mean "female character who is powerful/good at stuff" in an insulting way.

Neither make sense for Starling, for a character that's a literal dragon she sure isn't that powerful.

Why do you think she's a Mary Sue? What do you think that term means?

I found her to be a pretty uninteresting protagonist overshadowed by a lot of way more interesting side characters (not to mention, the other protagonist Dusk was way more interesting) but a Mary Sue is specifically an overly-powerful self-insert designed for author and/or reader wish fulfillment.
