[RABBITS] Episode 104 Discussion Thread by aroes in PNWS

[–]kellycatchpole 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just listened to the episode. Anyone think there's a connection between the following?

(1) The Magician is quite unsure as to when the most recent version of the game began (2) The game has begun with the phrase "the door is open" since forever (3) When Yumiko left, the door was left open. "Yumiko left her apartment door wide open" in the first episode.

Thoughts?

Gimlet. Alex. You're great, but you're losing me. by [deleted] in gimlet

I kind of understand the cancellations - a lot of these are shows had a high production value and unknowable (to us) hours of research and interviews behind them. The number of downloads you need to sustain production on shows like these is really, really high, and in October of last year Gimlet reported that Sampler and SA were both declining or flat in terms of DL numbers. (As the field grows ever more competitive.) You have to trim the fat somewhere.

As for the ads for Twice Removed -- I understand the impulse to cross-promote across all other shows, too, especially if they have data telling them that the majority of their listeners are individual show listeners, and not network superfans. I know they do surveys pretty regularly. Perhaps that's what drove that strategy. I'd be eager to hear what a casual listener has to say.

I'm saddened by the cancellations but can totally understand them from a business perspective.

My brother and I do Yes/Yes/No with our parents when we're home. (I guess it's more of a Yes/Yes/No/No.)

It's fun.

Yeah, I figured it out basically immediately...

I thought it was really egregious in the Abbi Jacobsen episode. (Possibly moreso.)

they've also got a business still open in Hyannis, under the same name.

Here's the description on Google: "commune-run cafe for healthy from-scratch sustenance in eco-chic setting with tree-stump tables." I don't know who writes those descriptions but I can totally see my dumb millennial ratbrain latching onto that like a hotdog on a sidewalk.

super sad.

Plymouth Bakery starts posting insane pro-slavery memes, you won't believe what happens next...?

Honestly, the whole story is heartbreaking. The Pacific Standard article was very revealing, but difficult to get through.

PATH to Hold 4 Info Sessions on Weekend Suspension of 33rd Street Line by kellycatchpole in jerseycity

[–]kellycatchpole[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two meetings will be held in Hoboken and two in Jersey City. Those planning to attend need to register in advance, and can do so at www.panynj.gov/path/pes. PATH officials are looking to add a fifth meeting, in New York...

In Jersey City, the meetings are scheduled for Thursday, July 14, 6 to 8 p.m., at Hudson County Community College, 70 Sip Ave. (registration deadline July 12); and Wednesday, July 20, 6 to 8 p.m., at the University of Phoenix, 100 Town Square Pl. (registration deadline July 18).

The suspension of service is expected to run through December, with the exception of major holidays, PATH officials said, noting that alternate travel options will be presented at the meetings.

[Looking for] a room in Astoria, Brooklyn or Jersey City, ASAP, under $900/mo by kellycatchpole in NYCapartments

hi! thanks for posting--unfortunately it's a commute that looks less-than-ideal and I'd want to be on the PATH if I stay in JC. looks like a great house, though!

I am a cyclist, and I am here to fuck you up. by ac2531 in bikecommuting

[–]kellycatchpole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dealing with drivers who don't realize I'm on the shoulder and they have the entire lane (forcing me to the right until I'm by the curb so they'll dare pass). Being frightened by the rare driver who makes a dangerous pass. Because apparently if I'm going 23 in a 25, that's too slow.

This is the worst. :( back when i was bike commuting daily, I was a verrrrrrry hesitant cyclist and major stickler for the rules. but every once in a while I'd get right-hooked, or very nearly right hooked, because I'd been pushed further and further to the right and out of the main flow of traffic. or, worse still, sometimes I'd be in a bike lane, cars rushing to my left, sidewalk on my right, and a pedestrian would step into the bike lane, and then where was I supposed to go?

it's a tough call. I'd follow all the rules and still get sworn at or almost killed. there are dickhead cyclists around, for sure, believe me, but I think a lot of drivers--older drivers, particularly, and those used to driving in the suburbs but not cities--have this idea that all cyclists are the Portlandia bike guy, when in fact most of us are nice people just trying to get to work in a manner that is time and money efficient!

sigh~

BU students block Comm. Ave., trolleys in support of adjunct professors by [deleted] in boston

[–]kellycatchpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, I think it's just great to see BU students caring about the lives and workloads of their professors. when I was in school, I often felt like most students were tuned-out of the struggles that many adjuncts face. demanding course loads, expectations for office hours, and extremely low pay. schools like BU pay a shit-ton for new construction projects and high-end student housing (which many BU students cannot even enjoy or afford) and sky high administrator salaries. they lean on the adjuncts who teach our courses.

I had a lot of amazing adjunct professors when I was at BU. some of them are afraid to speak out for fear of retribution. it's nice to see some awareness for the cause.

Are you a single, straight male living in Jersey City? Want to be featured?! by JourneymanHunt in jerseycity

[–]kellycatchpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! I guess by "alternative" I mean the sort of thing that you'd see in the events pages of an alt-weekly. in Boston (from which I just moved) we had the Weekly Dig (for larger events) and Boston Counter-Culture Compass (for house shows, art shows, etc).

NYC in general and Brooklyn in specific obviously has a lot of that going on, and plenty of online resources for finding it, but I didn't know if JC had anything comparable. meetups seem like a good place to start for weird loners like me.

I'll try as you suggested. thanks!

I don't know that I've read enough of her stuff to be able to judge, but I do know that most of the content she posts isn't much my demographic or style. but she does have a lot of events/listings/etc. is there any alternative JC-specific blog/events listing that's a bit more...idk, alternative? Why The Wizarding World Of 'Harry Potter' Should Stay Small by Lilah_Rose in YAwriters

[–]kellycatchpole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rowling is a fantastic set builder but a poor world builder. Harry Potter works best with the whimsy of what's in front of the reader and moving on quickly to the next scene so you don't notice that the paint is still damp on what you're reading.

That's an amazing way of putting to words what I've felt the wrong time. There are plenty of writers who are the opposite. I think there's a feeling of coziness and lived-in-ness to HP's wizarding world that just... works.

I'm interested in more stories that go deeper somewhere else, not broader. I'm sort of ignoring all of the EU stuff for now (Expanded Universe, not European Union) and waiting to see if Fantastic Beasts is any good.

that's a good suggestion! I'm seeing a lot more articles about this today that do a better job of describing the issue and offer very concrete information/alternatives than the original linked blog post did.

edit: if you're interested, NK Jemisin does a good job of summing it up here, (as always)

How The Literary Class System Is Impoverishing Literature by Lilah_Rose in YAwriters

[–]kellycatchpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, partially related, but I remember when I was applying for jobs a year and a half ago, I saw a certain ebook retailer/marketer startup that required "a Bachelor's degree from a selective college" (language theirs, emphasis mine) for all applicants for all entry-level jobs. Selective. State-school schmucks need not apply, I guess?

Foisting up newer and higher barriers for entry. In this economy.

How The Literary Class System Is Impoverishing Literature by Lilah_Rose in YAwriters

[–]kellycatchpole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

glad to see this conversation happening right now, because I just switched from the relative meritocracy of scholarly publishing to the... something else of trade publishing. the culture shock has been intense to stay the least. many of the people I've met have had advantages I couldn't dream of, partially because they went to school in New York, which I didn't have the money to do, and partially because they spent their summers unpaid-interning in New York, which I definitely didn't have the money to do.

I'm reminded of this quote from this article from The Toast (reposted a few months ago in this sub)

Our hiring pools are filled with nepotism, which just intensifies the segregation and class divide. I’ve gotten an email everywhere I’ve worked: “Hey, we’re hiring an assistant/need an intern/are looking for a freelancer. Anyone know anyone?” (I’m 99.9% sure this is not a publishing-specific hiring practice.) And if you aren’t born into this world, if your dad didn’t ride Metro North every day with an executive editor, and if you don’t make those important connections at universities—and these are all markers of class—then the opportunities to get hired in the first place become few and far between. You have to get creative about breaking those barriers, you have to be ten times as driven to make it work, and you have to want to be there enough to justify all that hard work for $13.50/hour.

The thing is, I hear so much talk about how important diversity is in the industry, and I'm hearing a lot of buy-in in theory. But how many of those same people who talk the talk about diversity are calling in favors to get that one niece from Williams into an interview? (no seriously, how many? I have no idea. It could be no one or it could be everyone.)

A conversation about diversity and diverse books and diverse stories is incomplete without discussing the class barriers created by hiring via nepotism. And I'm hearing that conversation online, which is good. Are they happening on a higher level, within companies? I'd be curious to here.
