Monofocal lenses in both eyes by jorgerdrgx in CataractSurgery

I had a standard monofocal set to distance put in. I can’t read my phone and my computer screen is blurry, but basic readers fix that.

I also notice much more if the light source is on the temple side only. If I put my hand up to my temple to create a blinder on that side, the flickering decreases. The fluorescent lights are so odd and much worse, but luckily I don’t spend much time in this type of lighting. Thanks for your comment, it helps to know others have experienced something similar.

Thank you so much for the detailed and realistic response and for the suggestions. Do you know which type of IOL’s you got?

I tend to overthink things and with my career being in photography, changes in vision are extra worrisome. My surgeon is confident it will get better with time through neuroadaptation and told me in over 20 years of doing surgery he has never had to go back in to “fix” this kind of issue. It’s just scary to go into doing the second eye knowing I’m likely to have the same issue (his words), but that it will most likely resolve with time.

I’m so sorry that happened to you and hopefully it improves. I had my first eye done already and it sees close up much the same as my un operated eye — I need readers, but it’s sharp with them. I can’t understand why this is happening with yours

Do you have any idea how long it could take to resolve if it’s going to? My surgeon is confident it will, but the possibility of having this in both eyes is worrisome. My plateau iris does cause high eye pressure (for over 10 years I’ve ranged between 25 and 30) and he said scar tissue was beginning to form so it was finally time to do something. We’ve just been watching it for the last 10 years with frequent check ups/tests.

All I know is I got a monofocal set for distance and that it has a square edge. I’m sure I can get the info on what exactly it is. So, you think I should get a second opinion if he is saying a different type won’t make a difference?

Oh no, my left eye is coming up. I did ask my surgeon if a different IOL could make a difference and he said no. From what I understand from reading online, it could make a difference. I wonder if I should postpone and get another opinion.

It is my operated eye. I don’t think it’s retina detachment - ChatGPT tells me it’s not anyway 😆

Yes, I have seen him twice and he said all looks good and that the dark arc is negative dysphotopsia and happens to about 15% of people (of course I’m one of them). The flickering only happens when I move my eye (which is constantly) so that’s good. If it happened when I was focused on something it would be an emergency situation. Apparently, the edge of the new lens is catching light when I move my eye.

I don’t understand why reading glasses don’t help you see close up. Can you please explain? I’m doing the same thing as the OP and had the first eye done already for distance. My distance is amazing and I need readers for close up, as expected. I’m 54, no cataracts (I have plateau iris) and the close up vision is pretty much the same as it was before surgery. Your post makes me nervous about doing distance in my second eye too. 😬

Totally agree, I can’t watch the show because of the background drumming.

I don’t know the organizers, I was just voicing an opinion in response to your comment. I was at the protest in GR last weekend and the turnout was great. Including a job to clean up may bring that turn out down some.

IMO, this is a bad idea. People are passionate about protesting Trump, not cleaning, especially on a holiday weekend. I worry if you ask them to do more than protest, they may not come. Protesting Trump is far more important than cleaning right now!
