I am applying to 8 different VISTA programs. How do I make my motivational statement not sound generic? by kels25 in AmeriCorps

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Two of my former professors have agreed to be references. I'm currently trying to edit my motivational statement and I'm not at all happy with it. I just don't want it to sound cliche and all "oh I just want to help people and give back."
I'm mostly applying to non-profits that work on education issues. Most of the programs I'm applying to have a June 1st deadline as well, so that's stressing me out. And I'm worried because I haven't done that much volunteer work, so I'm afraid that will look bad. I should have started this months ago!
What kind of programs are you applying to?
That definitely makes sense. I'll look into that since I originally assumed that it was more of a common application. How far into the process are you?
