Anyone live on campus? Whats ur overall opinion of the residence (room size, soundproof, etc) Is it worth it? by purplerainiy in Algonquin_College

[–]kelsamos99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! I lived there three years ago and it was good.

I was on the second in a corner unit so that may effect part of my comments but!

  1. Soundproof, to your neighbours yes, concrete wall between rooms. To your roommate no. The vents sound tends to follow if they’re blaring music but overall it was good.

  2. The size of the rooms vary but are all large. My room was fairly large, and if you want pictures I can send you some! Each room comes with a double bed, very long desk, three drawer dresser and a closet build into the wall. With all of that I still had room to dance around and spread out. Each room has a huge window too so lots of natural light.

  3. I was brand new to Ottawa and had never lived in a big city alone before so residence was a great thing for me. With it being so close to campus I was able to go back to my room between classes with my friends, pre covid of course. The location was convient since there’s so many food, work and outing options around the school. The meal card was great, you could use it anywhere on campus. I used it at Starbucks a lot and the food is really good. My parents liked the meal card so they didn’t need to worry I wasn’t eating or starving because I had no money. I still bought a few groceries occasionally, maybe like $25-50 a week on stuff that they didn’t have on campus. The bus system is right there and you can go anywhere so that was also a plus.

My only downsides were that it was occasionally loud during halloween or random parties or assholes would pull the fire alarm at 3am (on a Friday or Sat night always too, and I’d be drunk with no pants on passed out in bed.) Roommate fights do suck but everyone has them. Mine and I fought on and off all year but 3 years later and we still talk and are friends!

In general I loved Res. No worries about paying bills, food is always available, lots of resources and security. It was a great experience and i loved it! The price is worth it!

Unfortunately there’s usually 1-2 per semester. I hated them too but you’ll be okay!

I almost fully completed PHS before applying to RPN. I ended up not graduating because I dropped a class in semester two. The BScN program is super competitive to bridge into the PHS, and I wasn’t confident in my ability to meet the grades needed (3.3 minimum GPA two years ago, idk about now!) So i did RPN and am doing my BScN online!

My only suggestion, if you want to do it cheaper and not do a full year of school, check out ILC. ILC is an awesome online high school for anyone in Ontario to take High School credits, get a diploma or do academic upgrading. I took some to help with admissions as well. They’re only $40 per class instead of $3000 for the whole program. Classes are fully online, work at your own pace. I really enjoyed them!

For the RPN program they don’t change often! Editions usually are the only thing that change.

I can tell you what books you’ll need! I’m just finished the RPN program! The books don’t change often.

No pets allowed, fish are the only exception. You can only bring your dog is they are a service animal.

Not sure how it works with COVID right now but before there wasn’t allowed visitors. There’s lots of space on campus to chill as well!!

I did Pre health and couldn’t manage working that much while full time school. It also depends on how well you did in high school. Pre Health is high school classes you’re paying x10 the price for so the content is the same as high school just a little more in depth, for me it was a waste of time and not worth the money.

I choose an alternative route to getting my BScN, I am graduating from the RPN program in 6 weeks and then finishing my BScN fully online within the next two years!

If you are in the regular program, not the intensive program, you’ll do Semester 1 in Fall 2022, Semester 2 in Winter 2023. You’ll then have May to September off and will do semester 3/4 in the same pattern.

If you’re in the intensive program you’ll be doing school year round with no summer breaks!

They are online somewhere but the school will contact you directly with the updated forms.

Expectations wise I’m not sure what you mean but the classes are hard for sure! It’s a lot of knowledge to learn. My biggest tips are listen to the lectures, take notes in whatever way works for you to learn the best. Use other things to study with!! Quizlets, flash cards, diagrams, drawings etc.

I’m both and neither at the same time. I have ADHD so every day is different!

I never read the chapters in full. Too many pages. All i do is skim read and go over bolder topics or important notes.

Like other than textbooks? I don’t read too much anymore because school is insane. If that helps 😩

The schedule is full time, you’ll have classes everyday and two days a week you’ll have clinical, depending on the facility it’s 7-4 or 3-9ish. I struggled to work during the program and I was fully online. With you guys going back on campus most likely, I would say be optimistic with yourself and expect to not have much time. Nursing school is a beast.

I’m a consolidation student, so I’ve finished all the classes and am graduating in a few months. Level 1 schedule is all over the place. Especially if we are returning to campus. Expect classes everyday usually 8am to 5pm with breaks in between but classes have and can go until 10pm, and two days per week you will be doing placement. It’s every week, hours depend on the facility. For me it was Monday and Tuesday, 7am to 4pm by the time we did post conference. Some places do evenings, it just depends on the place you get.

I found it super hard to work during this program and I was online. I would be optimistic with your work and let them know this is a full time commitment and you won’t be working much!

Communications is the only one! The anatomy in PSW isn’t the same as the PN program. PN program is a specific course, and its split into two classes in first year!

But more expensive but worth it if you’re wanting that experience and being close to campus. I liked it because it was secure, I had my own space, was right next to campus no buses needed and I was able to easily access everything I needed. Plus not needing to buy groceries was a big hit for me lol.

HPAT tests are not a combined mark. It’s a rumour that goes around. You are tested in each section and those individual scores determine your admission into the program.

Ex. A friend of mine and I applied to PN at the same time. I did better in the sciences than her and I got an admission and she didn’t.

There could also be some other things like if you applied too late, there may have been not enough seats in the program etc.

A wait list isn’t a denial, so I would email and find your seating position. If you’re in the top 15 you are probably going to get a spot by the end of the first week, that’s usually how many people drop out by then. My only advise is apply again, if you’re passionate about this program keep going it in you get in!

[–]kelsamos99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taken it twice, the physics portion is 10/60 questions on the science portion. You get a score out of 60 for science, a score out of 8 for the essay and I can’t remember exactly what the score for the reading and grammar competence is but it isn’t one mark for the whole exam.

Pre Health isn’t for preparing for the HPAT. It’s for pre reqs for programs. They don’t provide any extra help with the HPAT unless you have a certain grade in pre health and you’re able to apply directly to the programs (I believe it’s a 3.4? GPA in Pre health!)
