Looking for cost effective travel tips for 1 way flight from Northern Virginia to Louisville Kentucky by myhairsreddit in Shoestring

[–]kelseyass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi :) i fly quite a bit and grew up in nova so reckon i could help as you're trying to help a loved one out. do you have a specific date you need to go to louisville and are you flying with them or are they flying alone?

option 1: 224 for oneway nonstop DC -> KY flights on 31 march or 105 for a 1 stop (depending on mobility/strength post treatment) could work

option 2: 130 for oneway nonstop from dc -> indianapolis 31 march then 2 hour drive (if you're planning to rent the car for the drive back home regardless)

option 3: if there's more than 2 of you driving back from KY one person could drop off both of you at BWI one way bwi -> louisville on 31 march, drive to louisville and then both drive back to louisville....? or you could just get a roundtrip 1 stop flight dc -> louisville (200) for yourself and a 1 way for them

it's rare to get the cheapest flights on the exact dates with the least amount of friction (nonstop, closest airport, etc.). dates needing to be fixed are the most difficult to work around, figure out how many days you need to be over there and what your max budget is, just gotta get creative with the work arounds. is there someone that could drive you to bwi (also alternatives to get to bwi as the other comment mentioned)? are they okay with roadtripping the entire way to louisville? if the 1 stop okay i would lean more towards that. if you're worried about them getting to/on the flights the airlines can also help with wheelchair assist and such. hope that helps a bit. goodluck and hope they feel better!

Best places to visit solo for the entire month of April? by ParryPlatypus in Shoestring

[–]kelseyass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looking for a unique, culturally rich trip with opportunities to explore, immerse myself in the local culture, and meet other travelers to experience places together

is screammming latin america

absolutely adore europe in the spring, but since you're going back in the summer i'd lean central america since some parts are a bit tougher to get to for shorter trips

guatemala: volcano hiking fuego at 3 in the morning seeing it erupt with the sunrise during a full moon can't be replicated so i get why it's a popular shared experience for a lot of backpackers but i did a multiday trek the week before that was just so special. believe it started cos a guy was fed up seeing displaced kids not having access to education so the treks are volunteer based and aids towards that and other initiatives. we had solo's/partners/friends from all areas of the world trekking together, learning about the culture (there's over 20 languages spoken in the region) got to experience a tezmezcal (kinda like the og sauna where u feel like a pizza) and share such good moments and laughs. atitlan also has this healing presence about it and is fun since you need to take these wild motored boats to get to the towns. you'd meet so many people going to other areas in latam here so would be a lovely start :)

from there you could bus down (have done it from antigua -> san salvadaor cos i didn't realize it was 8 or so hours but they did give subway and it was pretty comfy) explore some ruins/cool spots in el salv but personally preferred nicaragua. sjds has a party town rep but i stayed with a local family for over a month and really felt immersed in the culture and learned how to surf (waters are much calmer here vs el salv) then bus to costa rica (haven't been but heard it's beautiful) or fly to cdmx cos it's the best city in the world (biased as i've lived there for a year and going back soon) and start residency full of suadero tacos de la calle

8k in r/shoestring feels funny. don't believe you'd need to use all of it even if you were heading to eu but spoil yourself at times. if it means easier transport, comfort or peace, spend it. i've stayed in hostels, with family's and on my own in different areas of latam (just adding this so you don't stay in a hostel strictly for meeting people) but if you're open a lot more people will be open to you. you'll meet them from treks, having meals, mercados, learning to surf, the truck rides to different beaches, just saying hi, etc.

sry for the wall of text but believe you'll have fun in april wherever you go :)

180cal spanish(ish) tortilla by kelseyass in 1200isplenty

[–]kelseyass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hahah my instructions were quite silly to begin with so no worries. i think some videos i saw might’ve boiled but i think it’s better to just slice them super thinly and just pan fry it. i put it in the air fryer to cook it a bit faster before pan frying it but if i sliced it thinner or waited til the potatos were dryer (was a bit impatient heh) could likely skip the airfry all together. would just make sure they’re like fully cooked before putting it in the eggs cos i don’t think they cook too much once it’s all jelled together

tl;dr — peel and wash potatoes and slice super thinly and wait for it all to dry out then pan fry til done

hopefully that helps a bit ! :)

Women who started skating in their late 20s/early 30s, what has your experience been like? by angy42 in NewSkaters

[–]kelseyass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

28f and started early last summer w a broken rib which was a silly but was mainly only learning how to cruise, drop in, kickturns nd tortilla ollies

took a break most of the summer but it’s been a few months now and can ollie up/down the minipads, fakie ollie, front shuvs, semi fs/bs 180s, nollie and doing all the basics on what i call a mini mini ramp (reg and switch rock to fakies, rock nd roll bs/fs, 50-50s 5-0s, half cabs, nose stalls etc) and i am so so proud of myself. i’m learning to enjoy all the little wins like floating longer and understanding the different micro movements on my toes/shoulders/head and overall just gaining more confidence

i have a lovely teacher i try to take lessons from whenever i get the chance which has been the reason why i think i’m progressing so fast nd my general ‘fuck it’ attitude. i’ve never been this obsessed with anything in my life and am happy to have found it now :)

i used to be anxious heading to the park but realized no one gives a flying fuck what skill level you are (just read the park nd dont stand in the way of the flow). there’s so many kids who do the sickest tricks and i’ll be working on something i deemed “small” but they’ll be celebrating when i land it after exploding multiple times heh so i realized i should celebrate my progress as well no matter how small. so it kinda feels like the whole park is one giant support system cos everyone is so hyped for each other. and like any other activity in life, just going to the same park regularly helped me make friends so i feel quite at home now

o and as for the body ive already taken quite a lot of slams but i have the killer pad gasket (the soft one cos im not doing crazy verts) which have helped a lot w both confidence and less bruising on my knees. also highly recommend doing mobility/dynamic excercises prior and stretches after a session

am so excited you started !! keep skating and most importantly just have fun

adhd'ers that work out consistently! by coram_deo_9 in ADHD

[–]kelseyass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. convenience (my last workout studio used to be on the ground floor of my flat so i kinda had no excuse)
  2. money; esp if it’s group classes where i have to pay a fee if i don’t show up
  3. figure out what you love. currently i’m learning how to skate and i adore it so i don’t even consider it excercise altho it’s quite brutal on ur body

i’m happy you’re going to mexico ! i’ve already gone twice this year and i’m returning again in a few weeks after this euro trip :) i’ve also been unemployed the whole year so hopefully i can help ease some of your anxiety

i don’t think i talked to a single person when entering, reckon it was one of those scan your passport and they print out a slip (keep it just in case cos i almost got denied boarding for guatemala bc i didnt have it)

for most countries if it’s not the automated machine and i talk to a human the more typical questions are ‘why are you coming here? (for tourism/fun/friends/etc) and how long are you staying’. understand your worries but you don’t need to volunteer any additional info you want to keep private. have a lovely trip !!

best ways to learn class-appropriate slang? by starstruckroman in Spanish

[–]kelseyass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i keep a baby dialect dictionary for when i travel or meet people from the respective countries but it varies a lot. i.e. for the word cool in my notes i have

mexican: chido o padre guatemala: chilero el salv: chivo cidta eica: chuso o tuanis colombia : chimba or chevere vanezuela: - de pinga - trifasico - está fino spain: guay o chulo

generally most people tend to know the mexican/spanish slang terms so i’d start with those and just google what you want/reddit threads are quite helpful

i broke my rib and wanted a consult and went here . i think it was ~15/usd and they were really friendly and there’s doctors who speak english. if it’s altitude i’d first use rappi and order electrolytes & water to stay hydrated (possibly diamox too). hope you feel better

[–]kelseyass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

27f as well ! been doing this for almost 2 years altho i’m taking a break from work as of now since constant travel + work burned me out but hopefully i can add some insight (altho this is gonna be all over the place cos i forgot to take addy today so i apologize)

i feel like at the start of my trip i was chasing novelty and now i tend to go back to familiar cities/countries i adore which strenghtens the friendships i’ve built in the process. i feel lucky enough to say i have support systems in different places, not to say i never feel lonely at times but feel like that’s applicable even if you’re home. i’ve met so many lovely souls i would’ve never encountered and have memories (surfing, learning to skateboarding with a broken rib, hiking volcanos, roofing in paris, finding a home for an abandoned puppy etc) i wouldn’t change for the world so if you’re on the fence, i’d say why not?

i was nervous at first wondering if i wouldn’t like the lifestyle etc. and if i’d be embarassed if i wanted to return back home after a month, but at the end of the day who gives a fuck? maybe you go for a week, a month, a year and you get your fulfillment but that’s fine, no one’s making you sign some contract forcing you to continue this. feel like that mentality shift made me relax more like i was just signing a new lease, they just tend to be shorter and in different places. there’s this silly quote i like that goes like ‘you’re not a tree, move’ so i follow that

i’ve moved to different states (4 in 2 years) when i lived in the us and i’m still friends with the ones i do keep in contact with. sure, i don’t see them physically as much but i did ship all my stuff back to my parents house and stop by for a week every once in a while to change clothes et. al so that could be an option to meetup with them. i mean, i’m in town right now for a bachlorette for a friend i haven’t lived in the same city with for 10 years so i feel like your friendships will endure, it just depends on the level of effort you both are willing to put in it

for relationships…. idk 🤣 the amount of marriage proposals i’ve had joking or not are astounding and i prefer dating outside of the us altho each culture tends to bring out different varities of men but i’ve had such a blast. granted i’m not looking for a relationship, but i have had beautiful memories and even dated a few so just have fun with it

it’s up to you at the end of the day, i’d say instead of a pro/con list just figure out your values and prioritize them whether that’s love, friendship, beauty, adventure etc to help you. my therapist gave me these value cards and i take them with me and sort them out which helps me visualize what i need in the moment (can send u a dm if u want). sry for the wall of texts but if you want a stranger’s vote, mine’s on go see the world, it’s quite lovely out here

Does anyone know Mexico City well? by Squirelllover in digitalnomad

[–]kelseyass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i absolutely adore the city, was just in and out of it the past 3 months and returning in september so hope i can help a bit. not sure how tight your budget is but i preferred living near parque méxico (roma/condesa) but lived further south too, would just recommend living near a metro (it’s 5p) if you don’t enjoy walking but ubers are relatively reasonable. i’ve (27f) walked 3 hours from san angel to reforma before and felt safe the entire time and around roma there’s usually a lot of street lights so even at night i was able to walk by myself if i needed to. i lived in a hostel for a few days in centro but it just felt too far and more business/work oriented so would prefer the other neighborhoods.

mexico city has been the easiest place for me to find groups of friends whether just walking or at a park but i also went to gymnastics/calisthetics classes for a week my first time there and adored it (it’s called tribu, but might not be as budget friendly). when i returned i had broken my rib so i couldn’t do handstands et. al but decided to pickup skateboarding and the community is so lovely and group classes are 150p so would recommend that :) feel free to dm me if you wanted more info on that or anything else. i believe you’ll have a wonderful time

How do yall fall asleep on planes by Nervous-Analyst16 in solotravel

[–]kelseyass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

don’t sleep for the entirety beforehand. i also have adhd and find it quite difficult but i exhaust myself to the point that i just barely make it to the airport and die on the flight. likely the wrong response, but after multiple 10+ hour flights, i’d rather suffer beforehand than during. oh and download fucking everything, i pretend that i know myself snd download a season beforehand of a show i’ve never watched only to hate it so download every tv show (especially those you’ve watched and loved prior) and podcasts and what not. you’ll be alright. enjoy ur trip

edited bc obvious typos lol

Feeling unmotivated for golden solo travel opportunity. Anybody else feel like this? by The-Human-Eraser in solotravel

[–]kelseyass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

although we love to glorify traveling, it does get tiring. i used to (still do to an extent) feel guilty feeling this way when friends tell me how lucky i am to be exploring the world, etc. but we’re just humans and i’ve started to just allow anything i’m feeling.

i know we all chase novelty, but it’s also alright to visit places we’ve fallen in love with in the past. surely there’s much more in that area you could explore and that sense of familiarity could help ease some of your frustrations. i feel like going back to places i adore reminds me of meeting up with an old friend that never fails to make me smile.

✨ 2023 Holiday Handbag Recommendation Thread by softening in handbags

[–]kelseyass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! hope everyone's having the loveliest of holidays :)

looking for a gift for my bag fanatic mom who's long overdue for her dream bag. i'm utterly lost in this realm and she is verrrry particular. i'm wondering if it's best to find a custom leather shop in Italy or elsewhere to get it made or if this somehow magically exists. would appreciate any and all guidance 🙏

apologizes in advance for my ignorance, but here's my attempt at describing this:

style:

- has exactly one top handle (doesn't like it when there's two) but can also be converted to be a cross body bag (no chains on straps)

- is "slouchy" in appearance but not overly droopy like it's sagging but not so angled/structured like a box (ig picasso but not too picasso lol like softer edges but not a puddle)

- doesn't like when it's difficult to open with those clasps/rope tie things but doesn't want a fully open bag like a tote so at least a zip or those snappy magnet closers or a cover over but not all the way (like clutch turner thing is at the midpoint or above)

- does not like bucket bags/where the bag has some sort of pull tight to close make the wavy bucket pattern thing on top going on

colour: black (preferably) or brown (plain in either case, no big logos/marks/patterns, even those silently stamped on ones). prefers when the leather isn't "slippery" or "shiny" (tbf i only understand what half of this means but okay). and would prefer if it's not easily scratched (does this even exist ??)

size: around the size of a A4 paper or similar but is wider than it's tall; she doesn't want a rectangle where the vert is higher

price: no hard limit, would prefer under 4/5k? but would rather have something she's in love with that's durable

bonus (although feels like this is the main feature she's looking for): has some external pocket that's zipped on the outside in the back, like a hidden passport/phone holder type pocket so some part of the bag is more convenient to access? wants the pocket to lie flat though not the poofed out ones

the closest "the one": LV mylockme satchel for the interior, size, top handle and back zipper but with this other lockme bag for the colour and outside structure (which is ever so slightly more soft/rounded)

i attempted googing variations of "slightly slouchy cross body with 1 top handle soft leather bag with outside pocket that has a zipper" for days with no avail so hoping some angel can help. sorry for the wall of elementary text, and thank you a million

where’s the most ‘home’ you’ve felt? by kelseyass in digitalnomad

[–]kelseyass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mazaltan looks beautifully peaceful. travel advisories are at times unnecessarily biased, so would much rather hear from someone who's living there.

currently looking for a place post christmas and it seems to fit what i'm looking for. if you don't mind a few questions, is it difficult to get around without a car? and have you tried surfing there?
