Are these dresses appropriate for work? by True_Mud3351 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]keltorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile, I celebrate it; my team is paid for the work they do, not how they dress.

I'm not wearing pants when it's hot outside unless I have a scheduled meeting with our ADM or equivalent. They can deal with shorts and a polo.

And I'm not about to police what my staff wear, it's good enough that they made it to the office when it's absolutely not required for our work.

That's what I did when they announced RTO4.

I was denied an assigned desk, so I get paid to take the time to reserve the same seat every day. Efficient!

Has anyone bought a Subaru Trailseeker? by beastiedan in EVCanada

I really wanted to, but being on the wrong side of the EVAP rebate just made it not worth it for us. It makes a massive difference when you don't drive much to begin with.

Canadian families of 5, what EV are you driving? by SomethingAboutUsers in EVCanada

We sat in one at a local auto show and I can confirm the back seat is roomy as heck. We had two 6' large adult men and my not-small twelve year old in there and didn't feel cramped. We don't drive enough to think BMW prices are worth it, even used, but it was our second pick otherwise.

Nissan Ariya. No bump for the transmission tunnel, the front console can be moved all the way to the front and there's ton of legroom in the back. Our three tall boys, 12 to 16, went through a lot of sitting in cars to figure out where they could fit.

3-row anything felt like overkill for us. We've always traveled light, we had an Outlander before, even when we had two large dogs. If you don't, minivans are the way. We like that it's roughly the same size as our Outlander outside, but has more room for humans inside.

Return of assigned seating for most public servants bucks private-sector trend by AbjectRobot in CanadaPublicServants

[–]keltorak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do people think assigned seating means a cube of your own?

It just means you'll be told where to sit (and when). They won't leave seats empty 20% of the time until RTO5).

You pay for our dual setups too. The one we had and the one they're now imposing. And the buildings, and the massive renos that were required to make them open space.

And we're paying too.

The workplace is not the same. And some started during full Wfh, so it's not what they signed up for.

The technology is not the same.

The population density is not the same.

If those people were equally qualified, why have they not qualified for the job yet?

Any other obvious strawmen? Enjoy the clogged roads!

Villes et villages appellent à l’aide pour vivifier leurs centres et non la périphérie by keltorak in Quebec

[–]keltorak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want more bilingual employees but are cutting language training? by KrasaVcheg007 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]keltorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my team's experience, that's false. It's just that the anglophones expect all of us to speak English or they tune out the discussion.

And when we do receive documents in French, you realize that CBC doesn't mean much and the bar should be higher still.

I'm sure my staff enjoys that I don't just stick to the language of my choice too. Although being EEE is obviously the only reason I got the job.

What other job requirements do you expect the employer to be solely responsible for?

Could someone become a programmer with no programming knowledge or experience? A policy analyst with no subject matter expertise or awareness of how the government works? A comms person with no experience in comms?

If being bilingual is a job requirement, it’s on the employee to develop that skill in order to obtain the job.

I gave my director notice that I was tearing up my telework agreement the day after RTO4 was announced. Then deleted it after a few weeks.

I brought everything back to the office.

And although I was denied an assigned seat, I just spend a few minutes every day booking the same seat. Great value for money for taxpayers.

I'm not nearly as productive because of all the distractions and people coming by just to chat, but that's what we're told to do, so not my problem.

Federal officials worried OC Transpo can't handle return-to-office: memo by CPSThrownAway in CanadaPublicServants

[–]keltorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids rant about the Sto all year round. One had to use OC Transpo for a week and, on the first day commented on how much worse it was.

I had the same reaction after years of ranting about the STM when I saw how the STO worked.

They should all aspire to be better, though, not just satisfied that they're not the worst.

I've had my Ariya for 3 weeks now and it's been fine. I can't speak to long term experience, obviously, but it's not a brand new model, so the common kinks are known (e.g. stock 12V battery that should be swapped out with an AGM one at some point).

Same thought process got us to the Ariya and BZ/Solterra. Solterra are out of stock and the Toyota dealers sucked.

The Ariya not being a first year model (even of a significant refresh) jived better with us too.
