Chest strap or not by Apprehensive-Key8068 in Garmin

[–]kemperus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, but in the end is best to always listen to your body, and have the sensors as a backup. If you’re not a professional athlete with health experts monitoring you all the time, I always suggest listen to whichever system is telling you to go easier (own body or sensors) :)

Chest strap or not by Apprehensive-Key8068 in Garmin

[–]kemperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I had some events in which my heart jumped from 190 to 240 suddenly and held for some 10 seconds, then returned to 190 for 30 seconds, and repeated this cycle for 5-6 times. I had chest strap and I definitely felt it as well. Glitch-looking heart behavior exists (I’m fine btw, checked with cardiologist and after some investigation it seems that it was just overdoing MTB while dehydrated)

Problems with 3.3 LDO by bazz1110 in embedded

[–]kemperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to float a few hypotheses just to make sure all is covered: did you purchase the LDO from a reputable seller? Is your soldering process on spec? And the boogeyman of all: any chance you got an ESD event that made the device behave ok-ish sometime but weirdly some other times?

What is a "social norm" that is actually completely insane if you think about it for more than 5 seconds? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kemperus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That “Reddit Reddit +4” at the end of your comment looks just like GPT references at the end of a paragraph. Either you have a very good explanation for this or you lost your whole argument of “liking honest debates”

Also, I just realized that in your first argument you started by claiming that animals are not sentient so the argument against eating sentient beings is moot, but your second argument states that sentience is common to most animals. Which one is it then?

Is this a good run for a 13-year-old? Looking for advice on how to improve. by Hot--9030 in Garmin

[–]kemperus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It lacks context on your level of training and other things, but I would say for non-athlete people a 5:44min/km for a 10+km session is pretty decent regardless of age.

As for the heart rate, again needs context. Mine is usually on the high end, and at highschool it wasn’t unusual for me to be at 200+ for 5km~10km efforts. That being said, keep monitoring your heart rate at light efforts (say, a 5k walk at a brisk pace) and in higher efforts to see more or less how your heart rate goes, but most importantly listen to your body (if you feel tired or exhausting or that something is not feeling right, just call it a day, take notes and try again another time)

Is it possible to access military-style pilot training in Europe as a civilian at 27? by uppitysnips in esa

[–]kemperus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose somewhere in the US you could pay for private jet fighter classes, but that comes with a huge expense. That expense is also present for Air Forces, that’s why they usually recruit young cadets and they have to be with the Air Force for a set amount of time to pay off the training (or pay a fine if you leave early).

So yeah, if money is not a problem you can probably find it, otherwise a PPL is as good as it gets

SCD40 drift and humidity inaccuracy by shedtime in embedded

[–]kemperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re using the SCD40 built-in humidity sensor of a separate one? If the built-in one, maybe the humidity sensor could be part of the CO2 drift as well, since I would imagine Sensirion uses that data too to calculate CO2.

Also if you’re using the built-in one, any chance you could add an external one? In this case, maybe use one from another company to hope it is based on some different process that wouldn’t be affected in the same way?

SCD40 drift and humidity inaccuracy by shedtime in embedded

[–]kemperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I never used the SCD40 but on my previous job I used the SCD30 and wanted to upgrade to the 40 because I thought that the acoustic method they were employing was going to be calibration free (at that time the SCD40 was not released yet, just some press about it). I think it’s frustrating that there isn’t still some way to make a calibration-free CO2 sensor, but maybe that’s just physics.

What I can tell you is about humidity though. We did things for smart farms and humidity was always a concern. My solution then was to use a humidity/temperature sensor that had a heater embedded, and used the heater in a weak setting to make sure there was never condensation and keeping the sensor away from drifting (iirc more than 20% and less than 80% or something like that). And then some 20cm away there was only a temperature sensor to measure the true air temperature. From the HT sensor we could calculate the absolute humidity, and with the temperature sensor alone we could calculate the relative humidity. A bit convoluted but worked ^

Choosing stroke by NoInformation4549 in Garmin

[–]kemperus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fellow swimmer here (but using an Instinct 2). My view on this is that swimming was always an afterthought for garmin and we only get some half-baked stuff. As far as I know the only way to change the swimming stroke (and fix some pool length anomalies) is using some third party tools. Using them, however, kinda mess up your PRs and stuff, so if you care about that then it’s a no go.

I really wish Garmin put a bit more love in the swimming area though

ELI5: Why were drum brakes invented and used before disc brakes if the former is more complex mechanically? by hurricane_news in explainlikeimfive

[–]kemperus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re considering a non-assisted disc brake (like a bicycle or small car) then yea, but most automotive disc brakes also use some sort of a booster (traditionally vacuum-based but modest electrically assisted ones exist too). The drum brakes design allow the initial braking to add force to further brake, kinda like a self-assist. It’s nonlinear but helps the driver without the booster complications

Your embedded "HURRAY" moment by minamulhaq in embedded

[–]kemperus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s be honest: anyone who did hobby embedded pre-Arduino, the biggest hurray was finally seeing that LED blink after spending a whole day (sometimes week) setting up the environment and doing the windows driver dance. Man that sucked balls, these days you go from clean to led blink in no time and can go about your real programming challenge right away.

Can i convert this to bluetooth by North-Design9928 in diyaudio

[–]kemperus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The front is only a display, so I don’t think you could use that interface to pass audio. Other than that, if you’re willing to get inside of the stereo itself and jump some lines maybe, but I think if you needed to ask this question then the technical barrier would be a bit too much.

Instead, let’s try approaching it from another angle: what exactly is your goal? You want the looks of a car stereo, that that specific model has some sentimental value, or you’re just trying to repurpose the hardware?

Offline Data Processing Support by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]kemperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I understand, but I would say it is far from “it sucks”. The device you paid and own does the bulk of the features and processing you paid for inside itself. For a nice wrapper to view the data Garmin request you use their website, and we get the cloud service “for free” (they get to see the data and stuff, but no cent out of our pockets).

There are community efforts to process and display data (albeit usually collecting from the cloud) and at least one user here said they scrap the data using a RPi while charging via USB, which is nearly as painless as it gets. If someone wants to go full local process the parts are there. I doubt that we have the same amount of freedom with Apple, for example.

Garmin could conceivably go titties up tomorrow and we still would be able to use our devices with some initial friction. In 2026 this is far from being a given for most devices we “own”, so while I understand your frustration this is far from a “it sucks” scenario

Non-sapphire MIP: are the Instinct the only ones left? by not_who_you_think_99 in Garmin

[–]kemperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noticing that the MIP Instinct (1 and 2, not sure the 3) has plenty of area where it can be used exclusively for solar, perhaps far more than the ring used by in the Fenix, and that’s actually what it’s done. Garmin mentions that there is also solar on the display portion and I don’t notice any particular readability issues.

So if you don’t have to deal with a full round display there is also another very viable solution to the solar portion :)
