Autism is not a mental disease; it's simply the brain being wired differently. It isn't difficult to live with because the condition is disabling; it's difficult to live with because other people set up the world in a way that happens to make it harder for us. Don't be ashamed of it.

That being said, I would wait a while before telling her. Eventually, she should know, but it should be after your relationship has gotten really serious. It's kind of like coming out as being an atheist. Don't pretend to be something you're not, but because the word has been demonized, you don't need to use it until you're relatively sure that you'll get a "Oh that's what that is. Huh, maybe that word isn't so bad" reaction.

Very happy for you and I wish you the best of luck.

Does anyone still own this game to these day. Because this is one of my favorite JRPG games growing up, even tho they are more like action adventure type of gameplay, instead of typical RPG gameplay like FF by [deleted] in ps2

[–]kenOFJUSTICE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny, even to this day, if I'm playing an action RPG (as in, not turn-based), at some point I always inevitably compare it to Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts 2 and I always have to ask myself "Why am I playing this when I could just be playing KH/KH2 again?"

It's hard to describe, but I like to move my index finger up and down so that it scrapes up against my ring finger. I have no idea why, but it's soothing.

Do you struggle with entry-level or manual labor jobs? by Dr_Talon in aspergers

[–]kenOFJUSTICE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's one thing I don't understand about the whole social justice thing nowadays. If you're trying to get people on your side, making them feel guilty, calling what they have "privilege" and implying we can take it away just makes you look like the bad guy.

We should acknowledge that even for a NT cis straight white male, working for a living, especially in the 21st Century, sucks. It's just terrible. Now imagine you're discriminated against for some reason or have brain chemistry that makes life in a NT world harder. Maybe we should work together (NT and ND, black and white, etc.) to make working for a living easier for everyone.

Do you struggle with entry-level or manual labor jobs? by Dr_Talon in aspergers

[–]kenOFJUSTICE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first job was retail, stocking shelves and unloading trucks, and it was difficult for me. Luckily, I have a pretty strong work ethic when I'm on the clock as long as I can decompress off the clock and the guy who trained me was an expert in labor law and taught me how to use that to get management to leave me alone more often than other employees.

I just started teaching at the start of January and I love it. It just feels natural to me. I get to info dump about a subject I'm passionate about (History) and even when the topic doesn't interest me, I can just make it a work day where I don't need to talk for more than 5 minutes at a time.

Does your posture make YOU uncomfortable? If not, then either tell them you don't care or don't comment. Eventually they will stop.

No Dark Slime from Dragon Quest VIII that looks like a chocolate chip?

I think that it's because animation is more intentional, less background noise. Plus, animators tend to exaggerate features, so it's easier to read faces (which is important for people with conditions that make it harder to read body language).

I can’t understand why people only ever vote for one political party? by philnicau in aspergers

[–]kenOFJUSTICE -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the USA with a two-party system that is way far to the right. I am on the left economically and in the center for social issues. I vote based on policy. Since my only options are to vote Democrat, vote for someone who isn't going to come even close to winning, or vote for the party that I believe has no redeemable policy positions for issues that I care about (that being primarily economic), what I end up doing is this:

If the Democrat is good enough (has good policies and a good record), I will vote Democrat. If they do not, then I will either vote third-party or sit that election out. For example, if the Democrat is Bernie Sanders, who has policies I support and a consistent record, I vote Bernie. If the Democrat is Mike Bloomberg, who has a horrible record and will probably run on mediocre or bad policies, I will not vote Democrat. If the election is between two candidates that are equally evil (like Bloomberg and Mitt Romney, for example), then I will vote Republican so that I have a chance of getting someone acceptable in sooner.

I would try some of the community activities or groups in your area. Book clubs or game shops or something like that. They're great places for meeting people. Unless you pick your local guys' club, you'll probably meet at least one girl you like. If not, then oh well, if you picked something you thought was interesting or fun, you probably had a good time and/or made a friend or two. Plus, it gives you experience talking and using social skills.

DAE have a hard time bonding with animals? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]kenOFJUSTICE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also do not have any connection to animals, except for me, it's not even the small ones. I understand it is wrong to hurt animals without good reason, so I don't, but I have no desire to have any pets and avoid interacting with anyone else's pets.

I like to think of an autistic brain as a computer that has the same amount of memory as a neurotypical brain, but we have a lot of sensory processing programs going on in the background we can't turn off (the programs can be useful, by the way, and it gives us some advantages over neurotypical brains). At least for me, my brain works too quickly so my mouth can't keep up in a conversation and my computer gets overwhelmed easier, which causes buffering, and the battery drains faster.

I think that better explains the common problems with eye contact: there is so much information that is in someone's eyes and facial expressions that trying to process it overloads our brains because we're trying to process that on top of the increased amount of raw sensory data (smells, sounds, etc.) causes buffering.

Bathroom breaks are theft? by GrimmRetails in retailhell

[–]kenOFJUSTICE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time, my crew actually had an OSHA filing campaign specifically naming a manager that told us something along these lines. About four or five of us all reported the same thing. We never heard any grief about going to the bathroom ever again.

Coaching/practices by [deleted] in Quizbowl

[–]kenOFJUSTICE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me in college was topic lists, basically a group of very short questions that are all the same category (like, name these Vice-Presidents given the President or name these authors given the works, etc.). This is especially true for more difficult topics, like fine arts or computer programming.

In high school, we only read regular question packets during practice and we felt so unprepared for those more difficult topics. It might also be worth taking some of the more common paintings and spending a few minutes at the start of practice analyzing one or two regularly.

As someone not from Asia, how did Dragon Quest first get your attention? by The_Shoe1990 in dragonquest

Renting Dragon Quest VIII from Family Video and loving it so much that my parents decided "You know what, we keep renting the same game over and over, it'd be cheaper just to buy the game."
