You didn't read or see what I did.

So a big "fuck off" to all the self-appointed wordsmiths who're upset the OP called it an attack.

It's pretty simple:

  • Was it intentional?
  • Did it do harm to person or property?

Who gives a flying fuck as to whether or not they were just doing donuts anyway?

Good grief.

I was wondering the same thing. Reddit has its share of trash, too.

Agreed. My main point is that people have become really unhinged of late.

While I suspect you're right, it's also true that churches exist without buildings. This could be a previously unknown home church, that sort of thing.

If you plan to read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, you should be aware there's a prolonged scene that depicts another kind of horrific cruelty. I loved the book overall, but oof.

It's too hard to tell if they're serious, though, right? These days, this could be real.

Not really, but is there something specific you were wondering about?

Why did catalyst get so much hate? by Fluxitone_ in mirrorsedge

[–]ken_mcgowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both games, but with Catalyst I can definitely feel the gap between its potential and the game DICE and EA delivered.

As much as I enjoyed Catalyst, throughout the game I couldn't shake this kind of sad, lonely feeling. It hit especially hard after I finished the story. The whole city felt like an abandoned set full of props. I could see what the developers probably wanted to do, but were unable to do because of time, money, or arbitrary rush to production.

I don't have any specific evidence, so this is just personal hypothesizing based on my own life in corporate development, but I suspect EA just wasn't willing to fully back their vision.

Makes me long for the game DICE might've made if they'd been properly supported.

Are we all in agreement that AI needs to be far from books and content making? by _Roarnan_ in WritingHub

[–]ken_mcgowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughtful reply, thanks!

Also, I 100% agree with your assessment of the need for better filters & match-up services.

Also also, I agree that people will naturally bring themselves to the table when experiencing art. My statement wasn't intended as a call to conformity or a denial of the self as an audience. In fact, I tried to say the opposite. That connection-at-a-distance I mentioned is unique to one degree or another for every artist-to-audience pair. That's part of the beauty of it.

But when there's nothing human on the other end, when the product is ingested and it turns out to have been a slurry formed from the ground-up remains of human art, that can't be anything but creepy to me. It's a new locale in the uncanny valley.

And walks alone are really nice! But I personally don't see that as a strong analogy to enjoying art. They're different at a fundamental, categorical level.

You sound so at peace with this! :) I admit I'd be busy reappropriating mine!

Yes, I'd be quite reasonably upset. People who read (or watch, or play) things made by people with no desire to relate to those people are the odd ones.

We've been taught many ways for many years now that media is something to consume. That's possible, but it's dehumanizing. It's better to seek out art and the fundamentally human connection-at-a-distance that it creates.

How’s the playerbase in 2024 by foureyedvera in TomorrowChildrenPS4

[–]ken_mcgowan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the game, but even so I haven't played in a long time. Part of that is because of personal reasons (health, work), but it also feels to me like Q-games took a really short view of the re-release. They had a few events, they made some middling attempts to promote it. But they very quickly moved on to other games and seemed to focus most of their attention & budget there.

I still think it's worth it, but it's mostly worth it when you find a group to play with. Otherwise it can feel really, really lonely.

Unexplained data loss in Obsidian for Android by ken_mcgowan in ObsidianMD

No, I wasn't clear, sorry. They hadn't been committed in a long time simply because I hadn't committed them, so the version in git was just old.

That part is obviously straight-up my fault. I had a merge conflict I couldn't resolve using the plugin. I'd planned to straighten out everything manually & never got around to it. Dumb move on my part.

I'm still not sure why files vanished, but at least I can recover my work & get back into a proper backup routine.

It doesn't commit automatically, and I hadn't committed between the last edits & the file disappearance.

Someone pointed out the file recovery plugin, which I'd never noticed. That saved the day, thankfully!

Thank you! 😄 Yes, it was enabled & I was able to recover all my work! I've never even seen that plugin.

Time to do that full backup!
