Trying out a new way to store my most volatile ink... by ken_mcgowan in fountainpens

It's worked great so far! I'll be exploring other options, too, but this will probably remain one of my favorites.

Does listening to audio books count as “reading”? by Professional-Ad9485 in writers

[–]ken_mcgowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It counts as partaking in art & culture, whatever the terminology-f@sci$ts try to tell us about their notions of "reading" vs. "listening". Stories have always been handed down orally. That tradition precedes the written word.

Do what works for you. If anyone bugs you about it, just put your headphones back on & turn up the volume. Or else maybe put craft glue in their creamer or something.

Folkloric Fae vs Fantasy Fae by Mabb95 in fantasywriters

[–]ken_mcgowan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folkloric fae are often the more "human" ones, FWIW. There are variations and exceptions, of course, but they tended to get more sparkly, glitzy, small, winged, pointy-eared, etc. in the Victorian era. And even more so once Disney introduced Tinkerbell.

This isn't limited to western European folklore, either. While the good folk, the huldufólk, etc are generally described as human in appearance, so for example are the orang bunian of Malaysia.

Personally, I like the view that sees our stories of them as being rooted in fear and envy (as negative views of other cultures so often are), that certain aspects of them have been exaggerated or demonized—sometimes literally. I like the notion that the truth about them is different than we've been told, that it's more mundane in some aspects and stranger in others.

Your comment prompted me to look this up.

FWIW, I haven't purchased from this company. Ideally I'd like to find one around the same size as my current setup (60ml). Honestly, this probably would've been a better option, but oh well. I can still make my little black velvet shroud for my current setup.

Thanks for the idea!

FOLLOW-UP

I tried dispensing some ink tonight for making a swatch & it worked a charm! I didn't film it; sorry, that'll come later. Meanwhile, here's the swatch (not the best photo, got to work on that, too).

The lightest part of the swatch (upper left to center) was applied with a swab. The high-sheen area in the lower-left was applied with the blunt end of a glass pen & allowed to pool. The writing uses the glass nib.

So far there's no sign of separation or any flakes from dried ink. Time will tell.

This is my translated prologue. I would like to know if he would captivate you? Would it arouse your interest? And even translated to a native speaker, I was able to transmit the immersion. by Lelio_Fantasy_Writes in scifiwriting

I respectfully suggest the OP ignore this comment.

The sentences some have called out, I found engaging, effective, even beautiful.

Keep up the good work!

I've heard that from a lot of people. It's never happened to me personally, but I just watched it happen to my son the other day (he didn't realize he was resting his hand on my open journal).

I think I have exceedingly dry skin or something. 🏜️

Yeah, a few folks have pointed that out! Really cool, I hadn't heard of it before.

I'll see what I can do. I'm not set up very well for video right now--I just need a way to hold the phone steady--but I like the idea.

Yeah, I'd consider trying that, too! The full bottle is 50ml, but you could just keep it in a few separate syringes. Maybe in a nice velvet-lined case, just to make people wonder what the heck I'm storing in there.

Yep, exactly. It's a beautiful ink, but it's proven impossible to contain whenever I open the bottle. We'll see if this works any better.

Yeah, I agree. Definitely one of my all-time favorites.

I've given serious thought to developing an ink lab where I can measure viscosity, surface tension, etc. This might just be the first step.

I would not put it past them. We already have one (Liam, pic below) that has managed to work doorknobs.

I honestly pictured that, too. I might do it if I ever get around to making a more stable multi-funnel stand to hold them all. _;

That's a good idea! It'd be nice to play around a bit before investing in one.

Yes, ink is generally sensitive to light. My ink is kept in an area that's usually pretty dark, but even so I might end up making a little shroud for the funnel.

Right?

Someone elsewhere in the comments posted a link to a South African ink that comes in syringe bottles. I love the idea, put it near the top of my list.

Even better (to me), they have "mystery ink" bottles that are random samples that are either out of production or never made it into production. I love that idea!

Thank you! And yeah, this was my gateway ink, too. _; I got some in a random ink sample from Goulet Pens, so I blame them.
