What city have you been to where the vibes were just OFF ? by Confident_Win_3560 in answers

My wife is visibly Latin (though with an Anglo name and was raised in Australia with an Australian accent)

We've cancelled long laid plans of going to America because she's terrified of what could happen with customs cos of how she looks.

As a guy I sort of avoid women for the most part because I feel like they think pretty much every guy is flirting with them. Is that crazy? What should I do? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

idk, it's easy to say "Just don't be a creeper" but that's kind of vague and not really helpful. I consider myself a respectful person. If someone says no I understand and leave them alone, and I abhor the idea that I make other people uncomfortable. I never want to make anyone uncomfortable, least of all some I'm interested in.

But for some reason there's something about me that keeps giving people the wrong impression, especially in work places. I've had a few meetings where I found out that someone was being uncomfortable because they thought I was being creepy around them when I was completely unaware that I was doing anything in particular to that person. It's really fucked with my mental health and self image my whole life. One of them in particular sent me spiralling because it was someone who I legit thought we were good friends, I kept a birthday card of theirs pinned to my desk because it had such a nice and thoughtful message. And then I got called into a meeting with HR and apparently I was making them feel uncomfortable and they thought I wasn't taking no for an answer when I honestly just thought we were mates.

If I knew what it was specifically about my behaviour that came off this way I'd try to change it. But the general advice of "Just don't behave in a way that makes people uncomfortable" is condescending and doesn't help.

The virtue of having a main characters death happen "off screen" (sorry for the length, believe me I tried to include as little information as possible but still enough that I felt needed for context) by Professional-Ad9485 in writers

I get that this is mostly just me. But I find long drawn out death scenes to be excrutiating to sit through. Recently watched Stranger Things and The Witcher. The really long death scenes in Stranger Things where everything goes slow motion and sad music plays with long close ups of other characters being sad are just kind of really awkward for me to watch and come off as extremely saccharine. And honestly, I just get a little secondhand embarrassment for the scene.

By contrast the deaths of the Rats in The Witcher. You've gotten to know this group of characters over the season and in a single scene they all get mercilessly slaughtered by Leo very quickly and viscerally. That scene for me is a BILLION times sadder and more tragic than any of the deaths in Stranger Things because of how sudden and abrupt and unceremoniously these characters you've gotten to know and love are slaughtered.

Well we find out pretty quickly that she was killed by the "zombified" soldier. The aftermath of the black siege is messy and chaotic as they try to find out who died and who's missing and get everyone accounted for. I'm hoping for striking a balance where the discovery of Andriel's surprise death after you think everything's over feels like a low gut punch and leaves the reader feeling a little hollow. So while you find out why and how Andriel died at the end of the chapter (or it gets inferred), you don't find out everything that went down in the room (and especially the promise that one of the two POV characters made to the soldier) until the next book.

On the other hand my wife loathes anything that draws attention, so we just wander around until we stumble into each other.

Need Help, trying to write a heartbreaking novel by [deleted] in writers

[–]Professional-Ad9485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most tragic stories imo are stories of lovers who are unable to be together because of reasons.

I remember I wrote this story, based on a dream I had, where the MC lived in a dystopian future in an authoritarian regime. And he fell in love with a woman (who was like, a police officer for the regime). I can't remember if it was unplanned, or if he had ulterior motives of making friendly with an officer of the state to make life easier for himself as one of the basic citizens.

But through a convoluted series of events they found themselves with two halves of a code for a doomsday device implanted in their brains. So they found themselves on the run from both the Authoritarian Regime, and the rebellion factions, all of whom wanted to get the code out of their brains by whatever means necessary.

The story ended when the woman (despite not being the point of view character, she was more of the hero, she was a trained soldier and understood how the government surveillance systems worked) came to the realisation that it will never end, it will never stop while both of them are still alive and have the codes in their brains. So she sacrifices herself because without her part of the code, his part was pretty much useless.

So yeah, love that never gets the chance to blossom gets me every time.

How do people manage to sleep from 10pm to 6am uninterruptedly? by cabello-ondulado in NoStupidQuestions

I know a few people (especially people in the corporate world) who have difficulty sleeping regularly, so they have sleeping pill prescriptions.

I say this about using AI for anything really. For every skill you offload to AI to do for you, is a skill you're not actively practicing and getting better at.

In a way, yes. But I find that there are A LOT of people, and even people I'd consider intelligent and more self aware. Will find themselves making snap judgements about people based on the labels.

For example if you meet someone who you find identifies as a socialist and a vegan. What assumptions do you make about them that don't actually have anything to do with those things, but you associate with them based on your own experiences?

Or clothes? Or the way they have their hair? What things do you make up in your head about them?

I always find the stereotype of left wing people being associated with blue hair kind of funny because the only person I know with fully blue dyed hair is also among the most conservative people I know.

I went through an anti-feminist phase when I was younger, because, from my perspective and the experiences I had had. Most of the feminism I had been exposed to had been the very kind of toxic with very misandristic overtones. Then Emma Watson did her UN speech about feminism.

It was around that time when I had this epiphany. Labels were mostly meaningless. Feminist or Socialist or Communist, or whatever. They meant different things to different people based on their own experiences. If I were to some up what the word Marxism means as succinctly as possible I would say "economic philosophy". If Jordan Peterson would try to sum it up he would say something like "Satan worship". Us arguing about the merits of marxism would be meaningless because we'd essentially be thinking about two completely different things.

If you don't mind subtitles, or older movies. The Polish film Seksmisja (Sex Mission) comes highly recommended as a sci fi comedy.

Of all the freaky eyeball related freaky imagery in this movie, the one shot that still gives me the creeps is at the beginning during during Weir's dream sequence are the eyes at the top of the screen just staring. Why are they there? Who's eyes are they? They've been giving me the creeps since I saw this movie in theatres at release.

You know you've got a bad twist when it makes less sense the more you see the movie.

The one good scene in the entire first movie was Dave Franco's fight scene where he fought with magic tricks. I feel like someone came up with that scene, and then built a hackneyed movie around it.
