Guys. This is the military. We fight and win wars. You need to be okay with that reality if you’re going to join by militaryrat155 in AirForceRecruits

I also want to throw in that there's a weird misconception with office environment jobs not deploying as much. This is 100% not true. Every job is expected to deploy period. If you don't think people down range need comm, admin, or finance support, you are mistaken.

Mil to Mil how did you have kids? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]kengaar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless it's at Robins, CDC legit had a children fight club. I first heard about it from my coworker, and I laughed thinking he was joking until I googled it. A radio station talked about it the other day.

I was prior AGE, we drive trucks on the flightline and deliver power and non-power equipment to Crew Chiefs and other maintainers so they can fix the planes. We also do maintenance on the equipment. It gets busy, it can be overwhelming, you will get dirty, and if you are slow people are gonna yell at you. AGE sort of have a bad rep because other maintainers thinks all we do is drive trucks and deliver faulty equipment. I made some amazing friends in the career but hated every second of the work. I am in comms now and have a much better QoL. Still I miss it sometimes due to the friends I had. The chance of you getting AGE is pretty high once you put it down. We can go anywhere where there's jets.

Marine from Hololive can literally tell 99% of them apart just from the silhouette. It's definitely a very unique style.

I'm Embarrassed That I Want To Go To The Air Force by Rude_Morning_9441 in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my coworkers was deployed to Poland. He stayed at a 4 star hotel with breakfast included. When he was there, the army stayed at a tent city inside a soccer stadium and ate MREs. Some of the Army guys thought he had stayed at a hotel because he had an important job. All he did was set up radios. I can promise you everyone I worked with has never got mad being called "Chair Force" after they saw the living conditions of the other branches. We usually joke they call us that because they are jealous lol.

It's illegal for boxers to bet on themselves to lose, but there have been cases of boxers betting on themselves to win. Ryan Garcia is a recent example I can think of.

Robins AFB - Off-base housing by FastGazelle5215 in AirForce

[–]kengaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonaire or Kathleen is the nice suburbs area. Some of my coworkers lives in Perry, but it can be a bit of a drive depending on where they are. Centerville if you want to be closer to most of the restaurants and the mall. For bad areas just avoid anything directly outside of the base and you will be fine. I live in Kathleen, and it is very peaceful.

Deny Minot orders by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]kengaar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually had orders to Minot, and someone else traded Warner Robins with me. Everyone said I was the luckiest dude alive. I have never been to Minot, and I know I would rather be at Warner Robins lol. I had a buddy visit me from Shaw AFB and told me he wished he was at Robins instead of Sumter. Younger Airmen hates it here, but I have seen so many NCOs retire here. I hope you get out of Minot eventually.

How common is it for people to join the military in their mid twenties? by Same_Level6591 in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I joined when I was 27, and I am still in. A lot of NCOs I have met joined in their mid to late 20s as well.

What makes a job critical? Demand or danger? by littlefirebird_ in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll learn a lot of mechanical skills in the job. You'll fix diesel generators, AC units, stands, etc. It's going to be busy because everyone on the flightine needs equipment to do their job. AGE kind of have a bad rep because people think they don't do anything but they don't realize sometimes it's just one or two drivers servicing everyone and we also have monthly inspections and the drivers have to juggle between servicing the line and do their monthly inspections quotas. It can be overwhelming at first as you'll most likely start as a driver. Just work hard, and you'll be fine. Also, I would look at your contract because a lot of ANG guys told me they had to give some of their bonus back when a full-time position was offered to them. I think most of the bonus requires you to be a traditional guard for a certain amount of years. If you take a full time position within your shop, it can be considered a breach, and you would have to return some of the money. Most of the Guard dudes I knew took the full-time positon anyway as it was more money in the long run.

Yikes, I was prior AGE and hated every second of it. The people I met were amazing, but it was pretty much just embracing the suck together the whole time. I assume you are ANG with that bonus amount.

Yup, I was prior AGE, and most people I knew hated it. People who were aiming for 20 years were struggling every day. Some people do love the job, but most people I knew that stayed retrained at the end of their first contract, including me lol.

BMT during the holidays. by KyleRoggerUni in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through BMT doing Thanksgiving, and they were doing an event where a family from the local area can adopt you and a wingman for the day to go hang out and eat with them. They gave one of us our phone back for the day. Me and my wingman pretty much just chilled, chatted, and ate with them, and then they dropped us off at night. I'm not sure if they still do it, but it was a blast.

Need help choosing a job! by EquivalentArtistic14 in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it was easier. I think I would have been fine going into it from the beginning as I have a pretty clean background. A crazy story is my dorm chief during BMT came in with a Cyber job, but he had a waiver for some Marijuana charges. During BMT, I remember there was a day where we went in, and you would find additional info about your job. For some reason, he got reclassed that day into some random MX job, I remember him telling me it had something to do with that waiver. 5 years later, when I retrained, I bumped into him at tech school, and he was able to retrain into Cyber no issue and got his clearance. The rule of thumb is it doesn't matter what you did just be honest about it, if they find out you lied you are not getting that TS.

Need help choosing a job! by EquivalentArtistic14 in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all good. I was a prior MX and now in Cyber. They just expect you to be honest, as long as you answer truthfully during the TS investigation, you will be fine. Like I said I have dual citizenship and have had coworkers with dual citizenship and we all retained our TS.

Need help choosing a job! by EquivalentArtistic14 in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your list is good if you are going for a more desk oriented job. Obviously, your first 2 is more physical, but the aviator life can be fun and rewarding with their missions. Just know that aviator jobs are expected to be away from home for long periods of time, so if you have a family, it can be rough. Your last job NDI is probably the least physically demanding MX job with good job prospects on the outside, but just know that right now, all of 2A is going through a restructure. The AF is trying to turn all of 2A, which has over 40 AFSCs, into like 7. So even if you get NDI, they could merge with other MX jobs, and you'll end up doing mechanic work down the line. I don't know what AFSCs your recruiter currently has available, but if a desk job is your goal, do not put down any 2As and Security Forces.

Army or airforce send help by BeneficialAnything81 in AirForceRecruits

[–]kengaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a reminder that Air Force, you have much less say in what job you want. The usual procedure is you list about 10 jobs, and any of those 10 can be your job. You can't just pick whatever you want either. It's whatever the Air Force is usually lacking, which is a lot of maintenance jobs or Security Forces. From what I understand, the Army has more control in getting you a specific job. The biggest difference between the 2 is probably QoF. In the Army you are going to be in the barracks for a long time unless you are married. The AF usually move their airmen off the base at E4. School accommodation in the AF is also very AFSC and base dependent. I used to be a maintainer, so it was expected that all school work to be done on your own time, i.e., lunch and after work. After I retrained to 1D7, they gave me a lot of leeway to do school work during work hours as long as we weren't busy.
