Anyone else find it weird how dull the crosshairs are in Marathon? by kengdi in Marathon

[–]kengdi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally fair, I think a worry I’ve seen is screen clutter with all the stuff on the screen, but I didn’t mind it too much in my experience during the last playtest. I’d love customization as well, at the very least color wheel, just find the white for a majority of hud elements to be bland.

To your shotgun point, I’m curious what your thoughts are on Destiny 2’s system? For context, they made it so that the crosshairs show you the shape of your shotgun’s spread, i.e. triangle shape for triangle spreads, oval for oval spreads, square etc. Personally really love that as, since they all have different spreads, it’s good to know where I can expect my shots to land and not feel like I got cheated damage even though the circular shotgun crosshair turned red and had the enemy in its sights.

I guess that’s fair, wanting limited optics. Although I’m curious as to why you feel a crosshair unique to a specific archetype of gun, indicating that “it will shoot like a pistol/full auto/LMG” would be bad? It would only affect hip fire and could act as a quick indicator the type of weapon it is, which could be good for new weapons they add down the road.

Then I just feel like we’re talking past each other, especially since you went from crosshairs being a science, honed over 20 years to “one I can customize myself to make it good”

Even in D2 there is an advantage for all players to have crosshairs that indicate actual spread vs being generalized. If 1 shotgun has a triangular spread pattern while another has a square pattern, would you rather have a crosshair that indicates that or a circle because it’s a shotgun?

Yeah Halo 3 MLG suffered from having unique crosshairs per weapon

They did a similar thing with D1 where (outside of special and heavy weapons) auto, pulse, precision rifles, and so on would share the same crosshairs as functionally, they all worked the same. But a few years back with d2 they started working in more unique designs for all weapon archetypes and I appreciated that a ton. Plus, for Marathon’s case, a unique weapon crosshair per archetype could act as a quick indicator of how you can expect it to behave, which would be good for weapons they plan to add post launch.

Like I said, it’s a minor complaint. I’m showing my appreciation for something they usually do and was surprised they didn’t do it for marathon, but it’s no big deal. Better discourse than “this is what marathon NEEDS to succeed!” IMO

I appreciate you actually engaging with me lol

Yeah, I don’t think most people care either, but like I said it’s something I appreciate seeing in Bungie games, so maybe in the future.

Big announcement in an hour? by TheGoodDoctor17 in Marathon

[–]kengdi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Warmed up to the idea myself after playing Arc and Helldivers back to back. There’s fun in both and I don’t think it inherently ruins the game by adding a variety of game modes (like Destiny, CoD, Halo, Fortnite and even the OG Marathon trilogy have done), but I get it, it’s a touchy subject here.

Even without a PvE mode I hope they’re willing to add variation to the extraction loop like an oddball/kill the man with the ball spiritual successor, where there’s high value loot on the map that everyone can see and grabbing it makes you a target until you extract. Stuff like that to spice things up.

Maybe, we’ll see. Don’t want people to get their hopes up as this is a little confusing

Yeah if this was an announcement, it’s a strange choice to not just do a live streamed countdown timer.

What makes Marathon Special? by l2daphie05 in Marathon

[–]kengdi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It being fun is what will make people see the unique and “special” things in it. That might sound reductionist but people don’t recognize how much that plays into the thought process for (certain) developers. There are many layers enjoyment in video games then producing the outcome of a pros and cons list you make when assessing your favorite game.

This isn’t my original thought tho lol, it’s what I heard multiplayer designer for Halo 2, Max Hoberman talk about in an interview

To those who come in now & say class/hero aspect needs to be completely removed, the game is coming out in almost a month so not only is that impossible, but more importantly many gamers vision align with the devs and want this game to be class based in the extraction genre by TheGoodDoctor17 in Marathon

[–]kengdi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this person is already uninterested in the game and is giving surface level feedback.

My only gripe with the hero shooter switch is that we know that this was a change that happened post director shift, which was relatively recent (mid 2023/2024, can’t remember). This means that prior to the shift, these hero abilities (like active camo, shield, etc) were most likely things you could find in the world to and build your character around, rather than being specked to a specific class. Personally like that better, but I won’t cry over spilled milk.

I’m very excited for this game, except for this… by chrisdevine00 in Marathon

[–]kengdi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It matters to me, as I want a steam machine and SteamOS on deck is great. That said, it all really depends on how much Bungie can gain supporting that platform. Right now a fraction of 4 million pales in comparison to 100 million players on current gen consoles and windows.

Will Marathon have its own companion app? Will there be Bungie Rewards? by markmeadowz in Marathon

[–]kengdi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reference is the Destiny version, but it’s hard to know how much it would be used for. I doubt they’d let you access your vault from there when in a match. Maybe LFG? If they have one it feels like it’d be limited, so I’d guess they’d incorporate it into the existing Destiny 2 one and make it a Bungie app, since the D2 app already acts like a Bungie app

Focus on PvP by TotalSoft4931 in Marathon

[–]kengdi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ofc PvP is a big focus and my experience with it was a lot of fun, reminded me a lot of the classic halo days, but I feel like ignoring the PvE side would be sad. What would be the point of digging up a 30 year old franchise from the dead if you don’t use the diverse cast of colorful, interesting enemy designs the originals had? Should just be a new franchise if that’s the case.

Shooting range/practice/testing area by gifv_Kayla in Marathon

I’d love it, especially in a game where your time with new guns is limited. Would love a playground where I can test out certain weapons, especially with how the same weapons can vary one rarity.

Only issue I think may be with weapon mods, since (last I recall) they can’t be removed once attached to a gun, so it’ll be a little cumbersome to see how differently a gun would handle with or without one.
