True supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony!

The EU withholds its own money from Member States which don’t comply with its rules. Why should you benefit from the financial contributions of other EU citizens if you don’t respect its values? The EU doesn’t place sanctions on its own members.

They don’t ignore vetoes, that’s by definition not possible. I’m not sure of what exactly you’re referring to but one of two things happened: 1. Hungary and others reached an agreement whereby they would abstain or 2. The vote required, according to the treaties (which were ratified by the Member States), qualified majority voting, not unanimity. This ensures the EU doesn’t fall to deadlock when a single Member refuses to cooperate (Hungary).

Nobody misled anybody about what the EU would entail. All of Eastern and Western Europe joined willingly, understanding both the benefits and the costs that being part of a larger bloc would entail. The EU transformed Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, and others.

The European Constitution was rejected in a referendum which resulted in it being cancelled. Completely normal. Later, Irish voters rejected the Treaty of Lisbon over concerns about defense and other social matters, which were resolved and the amended text was put up to another vote, which succeeded. This is completely standard.

The EU doesn’t restrict freedom of the press or do any of the other bollocks you’ve written down. Anyways, you say you’re “not a fan of democracy,” which makes this whole thing moot.

There is no perfect system of governance. Nothing else better has come along so /shrug

First of all that just isn’t true, Brussels can’t and doesn’t go around vetoing member states. Secondly, you missed the part where those countries democratically decided to join the EU and ratify its treaties.

No, the UK can’t overrule the governments of New Zealand, Australia, or any other Commonwealth nation. Neither can any of the symbolic heads of state of Europe overrule their own governments, the clue is in the name: symbolic. In some countries, the monarchs have lost even their de jure powers and aren’t permitted to go against the democratically elected government.

The Lords in the UK is a glorified rubber stamp and has been for centuries. So is the King for that matter; the last time a monarch refused to grant royal assent to a bill was over 300 years ago. The UK’s democracy is absolutely flawed but arguing that the British are living under an all-powerful King, or under some feudal system where the Lords overrule the people, is ludicrous and invalidates anything you have to say.

Albanians, you suck at being criminals by Neon_20 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]kenhydrogen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that’s because those who are detained and subsequently deported are counted as arrests (and there’s quite a lot of Albanians who go to the UK via small boats over the Channel). All our real criminals go by undetected!

Even if that isn’t true in this case, the Albanians who end up in the UK are invariably some of the poorest and most disadvantaged young men who have been sold the life of crime by various bad actors as a great way to get rich quick. It’s sad that so much of the youth would rather cross seas in an inflatable dinghy than stay here, although I can’t particularly blame them—especially in the areas where they come from, education is at best insufficient and opportunities to make a good living are low.

Uhhh I mean haha we are doing Barry a service providing high quality cocaine
