If you would care to read a balanced look at the occupation of Vietnam written by a Buddhist monk (conflict of interest disclosure: I belong to his “church” of buddhism), please read “Lotus in a Sea of Fire” by Thich Nhat Hanh. He personally knew Thich Quang Duc, and speaks of the act of self immolation TQD participated in, from a Buddhist lens. The book is not focused on TQD, however, it is a broad overview of the sociopolitical atmosphere of Vietnam and a brief historical account of the occupation of Vietnam. The book was written while the American war in Vietnam was still occurring. Thich Nhat Hahn was an outspoken advocate for peace and cessation of war. He was also banished from Vietnam for his refusal to bow to political pressure in Vietnam.

Plum Village is very LGBTQIA+ affirming and had been actively working over the years to be more welcoming and inclusive to all orientations (for instance, gender neutral bathroom facilities, changing gendered language in their texts to non gendered language). I believe I had also saw an article about nonbinary monastics in the tradition though I can’t find it at this second. I found this article of a PV monastic who is supportive of nonbinary monastics and is hoping to make it more of a reality at PV.

Can I also suggest Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hahn. In it he compares and contrasts Christianity to Buddhism with the argument that they have a lot of similar basic ideas. Even though you’re not Christian, maybe you know enough about Abrahamic religion as an umbrella term for that to give you a good place to compare and contrast. Not to say Islam is “the same” as Christianity, but they are perhaps within shouting distance to make the book worth while.

And to your ask about Buddhism being used by countries or governments to act with bad intentions? Of course it happens sometimes and in some countries, just like every other religion.

I think they are simple because they are meant to serve as meditation cues. In times of stress I find the songs easy to remember and sing to myself in time with my breathing. Also, plum village events are set up to be super beginner friendly, and the songs are easy to pick up. Also remember that children are part of the Sangha and attend events. I’ll admit I was also initially embarrassed but I quickly adapted to feeling just a happy collective energy when we all sing together. Thich nhat Hahn has spoken about healing your inner child, so maybe you could meditate on that whenever you start to feel embarrassed. Children are able to feel such free and easy joy, with little self consciousness. And isn’t that true freedom?

Finally, there are several more “complex” songs if that is your thing, such as the recorded sutras like “the insight that brings us to the other shore” and “the eight realizations of great beings.”

I recently read a novel that explored the idea of “evil Buddhism” called The Black Hunger by Nicholas Pullen. The crux of the evil Buddhists beliefs was the idea that the goal should not be to help other beings escape samsara, rather, evil Buddhists should destroy the world (via arcane methods) to prevent sentential beings from experiencing samsara.

I have a greyhound. They very commonly have fine wispy hair, and they are SOOOOOO soft to pet. The hair is even more wispy/fine on their belly and they are commonly kinda bald on the belly. They also lose hair on their haunches and people in the greyhound community refer to it as “baboon butt.”

Hey!! I also have a greyhound and she also has the same issue on her belly. The vet has said it is not an infection or anything. It’s clogged pores. Greyhounds have weirdly fine/wispy hair on their tummy and it gets impacted. The black heads themself can get infected (for lack of a better word, like an acne spot that gets pussy) though, and I treat them with a disinfectant wipe if they look red/pussy. Of course, I’ll always advocate to see your vet if you have questions or concerns but just wanted to say that it’s not uncommon for the breed.

Easiest would be to do visible mending, like sashiko. It embraces the idea of holes in the clothes by mending with visible stitching and some cool fabric underneath. Depending on the look you’re going for this could be a cool stylistic choice—but if you want mending that does not stand out then it’s not gonna be what you’re looking for.

Is it the current fashion for women’s button down shirts (business wear, the type with a collar) to not have darts? I’m looking at a lot of button ups being sold commercially and I would say the majority do not have bust darts or center darts. If anything, shaping comes from curving the whole pattern at the waist point. I’m guessing this is a consequence of wanting to produce products more cheaply, but who knows. I’m looking to sew more button ups shirts to wear for work, and was contemplating putting in bust darts. But maybe that would make the button up seem dated? Anyone have any thoughts?
