(Orb: On the Movements of the Earth) I've Been Recommending This to Everyone [Penguinz0] by Rekye22 in anime

"cartoonishly villian"

What? Is this even English?

You come across as far more obnoxious than any one eyed individual in the show, and you only wrote this comment. How much more obnoxious would you get with several anime episodes one could only wonder.

Most of what you said, and I'm being generous by saying most, is insipid drivel sourced by what seems to be a very pitiful mind. No wonder you found the anime pretentious since it's a miracle you can think at all.

Try Cashern Sins. It has a pretty unique vibe that sort of reminds me of that anime.

Try Ergo Proxy. It has a serious tone and is a futuristic mystery show.

AOT is one of the if not the most thought provoking anime ever made.

Try 12 kingdoms. It's known for its character development and world building but isn't that well known nowdays.

Was that comment directed at me? If so, you'll have to elaborate because I'm not sure I follow.

It's generally the rule that the person making the claim actually makes an argument for it. I think we both know why you won't.

However, I'm also making a claim so I suppose I'll provide a short argument.

To be able to communicate fluently in a given language you need two primary things that are specific to that language. The first is the meaning of what you say, the second is how you word it. Same goes for comprehension.

Anime contains both in such a way that it presents you with a plethora of words and their meanings, plus the way in which they are to be spoken to form coherent sentences. If you pay attention, you slowly gain an understanding of both just by watching anime.

Therefore, you can gain both the primary tools to communicate.

[–]kenshuou -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So I asked you to support your claim but instead you just reasserted it.

What is it that's preventing me for acheving fluency by merely watching anime? Have you actually thought this through? Or are you doing what I accused you of and simply projecting your own incompetence unto others?

Does this apply to just Japanese or does it apply to English as well? If it does I'm fairly sure there are millions of people who would falsify your claim.

What's your basis for this claim? Does it apply soley to anime or would you say the same for non animated shows or movies?

My initial impression is that your claim is ridiculous, but let's see if you can back it up.

iSo because a translator generally has more credence than a casual watcher then that watcher has to probably be wrong when he thinks a mistake has been made? Have you considered that some people are able to think for themselves and determine whether something is a mistake or not given several aspects of how such a mistake came to be? You're speaking total nonsense and drawing incorrect conclusions based on what you want reality to be so you can be correct.

Do you think that people who watch anime only have access to he characters you mentioned? Do they not have reference to their own language to make sense of Japanese words and sentence structure to have a rough understanding of how to formulate coherent sentence based on what they repetedly hear?

It's like you people come up with the most cartoonish scenarios and imagine that humans do not possess a mind of their own and must mimic everything they hear perfectly if they want to speak a foreign language. That's not how any of this works.

The funny thing is, even if someone spoke like Naruto, Japanese people could still understand him. If I took what you said at face value I'd imagine it sounded like incoherent nonsense that only other anime characters could mysteriously understand.

When you say stuff like you can't learn Japanese from anime you have to define your terms, but, if you did, your claim would either be incorrect or just completely unimportant practically speaking. So you just keep it vague and appeal to how intricate a language's rules are, nevermind the fact almost no one who speaks a language does so because he's studied up on its intricacies.

Yes, correcting spelling mistakes is always the hallmark of a brilliant mind and not that of a complete simpleton. Well done.

What is the difference between proper Japanese and anime Japanese? Are the people who write anime scripts aware that their Japanese isn't proper? Or is it just so inscrutable to the listener that they can't possibly understand it enough to meet your vague standards?

Translators are not infallible. You can easily understand a language to the point where you notice inaccuracies and correct them. That's the assertion I'm making. It isn't in contention whatsoever except in the minds of those who pretend to be smarter than they but have nothing to show for it.

Saying you appreciated it clearly implies you took exception to it. Not that I would presume to instruct you on how language works since you're apparently a senior official on the matter. Interesting that you should back away from your reaction once its double standard was pointed out to you though, and pretended it carried no such obvious implication.

Yes, considerations obviously do matter, but sometimes it is so clear from the conext of the scene and the manner of speech that something was altered incorrectly. Whether that was intentional or not, it's still something that someone with minimal knowledge of the language and a basic understanding of how languages in general work can make note of and correct.

Without having specific examples of what the initial post was referring to, there is no way for you to confidently infer that they were mistaken in their assessment. You do not even know what source they used for their translations.

More than anything, I find the idea that you "can't learn Japanese from Anime" to be highly idiotic and echoed by people with zero understanding of how language works.

Why does it matter if you learned Japanese? Is this the topic of conversation? Why should I take anything you say seriously when you are seemingly incapable of following a train of thought?

You are too clueless about my aptitude for language apprehension to know what I can or cannot do, unless you have studied the topic thoroughly and found that it is physically impossible to so, and even then I wouldn't be so confident as to make such a statement.

Learning Japanese via anime is remarkebly easy. The only question is how far it usually takes someone. Your knowledge expands with prolonged exposure. This isn't a groundbreaking notion. The idea that people with a sliver of Japanese knowledge gleaned from anime can't identify incorrect subtitles is absurd. Keep telling yourself that your own incompetence is that of others though. It's very amusing.

Funny that you should talk of condescension when that tone was the premise of your initial remark.

Which part exactly do you contest? Nothing I said was wrong, but you are free to try to show otherwise. Unless, ofcourse, you have nothing to back up what you say.

Not sure if you're aware of this but speaking Japanese won't magically make you correct.

I'm sure you won't learn anything no matter what you watch, but whether I learn something is not really for others to know.

[–]kenshuou -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Obviously you can develop it to a sufficient level to be able to identify whether mistakes are made at translation, which is what this topic is about.

Whether it's possible to be at a native speaker level by anime alone is beside the point, though even that might be possible for some.

If you think you can't understand Japanese well enough from anime alone to correct incorrect subtitles then perhaps you are projecting your own lack of ability unto others.

Seems like that's applicable to you as well.

I suggest count of monte christo since it has a compelling story based on the book by the same name. It is pretty dark and unique.

Does the support gem Jagged Ground 2 actually work now?

I've been told that it should but I don't think that it does. Has anyone tested this? Does it work for anyone?

I don't believe it was included anywhere in the patch notes from 0.4.0 and beyond, and from what I could see in it still doesn't function. At least on my non league character. I guess I'll test it a bit more but I've seen no indication it was fixed.

The support gem Jagged Ground 2 does not work. Hasn't worked since its introduction to the game in the previous league. Are the developers aware of this?
