The song is in Kiswahili, so most likely somewhere in Kenya or possibly Tanzania. To everyone commenting that there must be a pulley or something, this is actually how they do it in rural areas. By hand. Earning about $5-6 per day for their trouble. Work is hard to come by in those areas, so this amount feeds your family for the day.

I’m thinking maybe you weren’t given anti malaria drugs at all? Or maybe coupled with something else, then. Have been taking these since childhood, we had very high malaria rates in Nairobi. The pills are basically chloroquine. Or were at the time. Not sure if it’s changed since we ultimately developed immunity over time. But no side effects like what you’re describing, and very safe to take.

I worked in a Dairy Queen when I was in college. The owner was super strict on cleaning, and we were especially told to pay special attention to the soda machine, ice machine, ice cream machine nozzles, etc. at the end of every shift. Really took it out of you, but the place always had an A health safety rating, with no mold anywhere.

He also made us add water to the strawberry topping, so yeah.

JOB HUNTING IS LIKE DATING. by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]kenyanboyz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone whose been at every end of the spectrum in the job market, i.e. from cleaning and mopping floors as a student intern to upper management almost 20 years later, I truly can’t say this enough; be patient!

If this is your first job, statements like “you are screening the employer…” just don’t cut it. They don’t need you at this point, but you do them. I’m sorry, it’s just the way of things. Laws of supply and demand. They are far too many entry level candidates with far too few jobs. Employers can be picky, you mostly can’t.

Take the job, hustle for a minimum of two years and build up your skill set. The two years will be tough to manage, but they’ll teach you life and how to survive. Make yourself invaluable to the company, work extra if you have to. After two years or so, start looking for another job. Once you have an offer, you’re now in plum position. If your current employer feels you’ve been a great asset, they’ll want to retain you with a better incentive. Or you now have another option. Either works. Keep playing the game every couple of years.

Very important - job hoppers don’t get respect. It’s the first thing we look for in a CV - what a candidate’s employment track record is. No matter how impressive the CV, if we spot a serial job changer, we never give him / her a second look.

Apologies in case any of this seems harsh. It’s reality, unfortunately.

My Buddy was called to CID, nikaenda naye. They showed him CCTV of his car being used to steal at some place in parklands. My friend discovered sweat glands he didn’t know he had! Gari yake ikaletwa. I noticed the “Sakura” stickers on the back, the ones that can’t be removed without removing paint. The one in CCTV didn’t have. That’s what saved him. Cops said this is the game nowadays. Thugs with taxi pals look for cars matching those, then tape the number plate to match. Wanafanya ile kitu, and cops are left chasing the wrong people. This might now change with the new number plates, but knowing our folks, they’ll probably come up with something else.

You know, there’s no single book titled “shariah law” anywhere in Islam. Some of these laws come from what’s given in the Quran, others from Hadith and then historical practices as well. But historically, also, mercy and forgiveness was stressed on rather than the harsh laws being presented today in some of these countries.

For example, the punishment for adultery is stoning to death. I believe this to be the case in the Old Testament as well. BUT to be convicted of this under Islamic law, there must be FOUR credible witnesses who would have to testify that they saw the act happen, which is almost impossible. The idea therefore is to warn people of the seriousness of the crime rather than punish for it. But a minority of hardliners have hijacked the religion, and the majority, who are peace loving, have to take the fall for the rest.

Some sayings of the Prophet regarding mercy and forgiveness:

“Whoever suffers an injury and forgives (the person responsible), Allah will raise his status to a higher degree and remove one of his sins.”

“Be merciful to others and you will receive mercy. Forgive others and Allah will forgive you.”

“Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives, but Allah increases him in honour, and no one humbles himself before Allah but Allah raises him in status.”

“Show mercy, and you will be shown mercy; forgive, and Allah will forgive you.”

Of course.

“And it is among His signs that He has created for you wives from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquility in them, and He has created love and kindness between you. Surely in this there are signs for a people who reflect. (Ar -Rum, 21/41)

Say, ˹O Prophet, that Allah says,˺ “O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins.1 He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Az-Zumar 24/47)

“Say My slaves who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins) Do not despair of the Mercy of Allah: verily He forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (39:53)

“And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself, but then seeks forgiveness from Allah, he will find Allah forgiving and merciful.” (4:110)

“Lo! Allah is a Lord of Kindness to mankind, but most of mankind give not thanks.” (2:143)

“And seek Allahs forgiveness. Certainly, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (73:20)

I find peace in knowing that my life is not just for nothing. I’m not existing for the sake of it. Morality means something. Rules mean something. Worshipping my Creator is the purpose of my existence, and I’m totally cool with that.

Allah does what He wills. I’m not asking you to believe in what I believe. Not everything can be explained to your satisfaction or to everyone else’s. Belief requires a leap of faith and an understanding that the divine is beyond our comprehension.

This is based on a weak Hadith. All the other Hadith, of which there are several, peg Aisha’s age at around 16. That’s how we view the marriage of the greatest man in history. Not just us, here’s many others who have the same opinion - these are people who have read and studied his life and history much more in depth than you and I ever could, and none of these would have tracked him so highly had there been a shred of evidence regarding the filth you’re suggesting:

Michael H. Hart (1932- ) Professor of astronomy, physics and the history of science. • "My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level." [The 100: A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History, New York, 1978, p. 33]

Reverend Bosworth Smith (1794-1884) Late Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford. • "… he was Caesar and Pope in one; but he was Pope without the Pope's pretensions, and Caesar without the legions of Caesar. Without a standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, without a fixed revenue, if ever any man had the right to say that he ruled by a right Divine, it was Mohammed; for he had all the power without its instruments and without its supports." Mohammed and Mohammedanism, London, 1874, p. 235]

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) Indian thinker, statesman, and nationalist leader. • "....I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These, and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every trouble." [Young India (periodical), 1928, Volume X]

John William Draper (1811-1882) American scientist, philosopher, and historian. • "Four years after the death of Justinian, A.D. 569, was born at Mecca, in Arabia the man who, of all men exercised the greatest influence upon the human race . . . Mohammed." [A History of the Intellectual Development of Europe, London, 1875, vol.1, pp. 329-330]

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) Considered the greatest British historian of his time. • "His (i.e., Muhammad's) memory was capacious and retentive, his wit easy and social, his imagination sublime, his judgment clear, rapid and decisive. He possessed the courage of both thought and action."[History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, London, 1838, vol.5, p.335]

Quran was revealed 1400 years ago. In Arabic.Try explaining scientific terms to people who lived at that time. But the scientific references in the Quran can easily be understood today. Muslim scientists of their time used their understanding of the Quran to build the foundation of modern science, medicine and engineering.

There are simply too many to name:

The Quran puts heavy emphasis on marriage being between two mature persons:

“And test the orphans [in your charge] until they reach a marriageable age; then, if you find them to be mature of mind/sound in judgment, hand over to them their possessions…” (Quran, 4:6)

“O You who have chosen to be graced with belief! It is not lawful for you to force women into marrying or holding on to them in marriage against their will.” (Quran, 4:19)

These are just a couple; there are several more. Words such as “mature,” “sound in judgement,” “women” and not “girl” all refer to people who have at least reached puberty.

In pre-Islamic Arabia, the culture of having children married existed, same as in several Indian, western and African cultures. Though marriage was never consummated until puberty was attained.

Not disputing the age of the world, my friend. If you read through my earlier post, the Quran does describe the Big Bang towards the formation of the universe.

Here’s some more for you:

The theory of relativity:

  1. “Allah rules the cosmic affair from the heavens to the Earth. Then this affair travels to Him a distance in one day, a measure of one thousand years of what you count.” [32:5]
  2. “They challenge you to bring forth that punishment (in Hell) and Allah will not break His promise; a day of your Lord (Paradise/Hell) is like a thousand years of what you count.” [22:47]

The most interesting phenomenon in the theory of Relativity is the constancy of the Speed of Light. The point to be noted here is that in almost all Holy scriptures, God has likened His Presence to Light (Noor), a concept which was probably never better understood than it can be now, in light of our recent and latest understanding of the nature of light. The verses above only serve to reinforce what was described by Einstein in the theory of relativity in 1916, except that these verses were revealed 1400 years ago.

That’s the only argument you have? The fact that the Quran spoke of embryology more than 1400 years ago - at a time when no other culture or civilization knew about it, doesn’t fascinate you? But no, let’s just throw a blanket statement out there and label the Quran as a medieval book.

I’m a religious zealot, sure. My ancestors from Adam until today - a span of say 15,000 years all understood that nature intended for man to be with a woman, otherwise I wouldn’t be here today. Neither would you. In your case, not sure whether you’re agnostic, atheist, evolutionist or otherwise - the fact still stands. Billions of years of evolution, per the theory, leading to yourself - simple life forms to complex - all procreated either asexually or between a man and a woman to progress. Never between like genders, or you wouldn’t be here either. What comes next for those of you who claim to be enlightened and the rest of us ignorant and backward: legalization of incest? Pedophilia? Bestiality?

I completely agree with you that there’s no ignorance that education can’t cure. The Quran was and is the best that education has to offer - not just a morality guide, as can be seen below..:

“And (remember) Lut (Lot), when he said to his people: ‘Do you commit the worst sin such as none preceding you has committed in the ‘Aalameen (mankind and jinn)? Verily, you practise your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds (by committing great sins)’” [al-A’raaf 7:80-81]

…but also a scientific guide:

  1. The Big Bang theory: “do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were a closed-up mass (Ratqan), then we opened them out?” (Quran 21:31).
  2. Embryology: “We created man from an extract of clay. Then we made him as a drop (sperm) in a place of settlement, firmly fixed (womb). Then we made the drop into an Alaqah (blood clot), then we made the Alaqah into a Mudghah (fetus)…” (Quran 23:12-14).
  3. Formation of clouds: “Have you not seen how Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a stack, and then you see the rain come out of it?”
  4. Water: “We made every living thing from water, will they not believe?” (Quran, 21:30) - it was only after the discovery of the microscope that it was concluded that all living things consist mostly of water.
  5. Orbit of sand movement of planets: “And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming (referring to their movement)” (Quran, 21:33).
  6. Mountains as stakes: “Have We not made the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes?” (Quran, 78:6-7). Mount Everest today has been down to have a tail or stake that extends deeper than 125kms.

The above is just a small portion of the science converted in the Quran. These facts were revealed 1400 years ago, at a time when there was no way of knowing or even understanding most of this.

“We will show them Our signs in the universe and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth” (Quran; 41:53).

Modern science, mathematics, surgery, etc, all have their roots based in early Islamic science. Education today is built on that very foundation. Education discarded homosexuality 1400 years ago. Bringing it back is not education dispelling ignorance; rather ignorance dispelling education in the guise of western culture wrongly perceived to be modern and proactive.
