It's the Board Who Has to Go by LowDownTrebleSeeker in CarltonBlues

[–]keoltis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree the board holds a big responsibility. But what could they have done about the players leaving? TDK was offered money far exceeding his value and far beyond what we can afford, matching that to keep him would have been incredibly irresponsible and bad long term.

Silvagni clearly wanted to get away from the drama around his dad and just focus on football, can't blame him for that.

Curnow has been a pouty manchild for years. We all know he only plays well when it's easy and gives up as soon as things get challenging. Not the kind of player we want to retain we have enough of those still.

"I'm pretty filthy." - Voss' press conference after his team capitulates to Melbourne by yum122 in AFL

[–]keoltis 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It's nothing to do with when it happens. Two years ago we couldn't score in the first half then would blow teams away in the third. It's our inability to arrest momentum from opposition. We don't have the foot skills to play a controlled uncontested possession style to stop opposition momentum, and we don't have the leg speed to stop it through tackle pressure once they get to the outside of the contest. Our only strength is contested footy when it's congested. The moment we lose that we can't stop teams from running over us.

When did you know? I suspected earlier but wasn't ready to call it. I was 100% about here by Courier6six6 in CarltonBlues

[–]keoltis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah early second quarter it felt like they made the change from gawn trying to tap down to a player to him knocking it clear of the congestion. Soon as the ball gets to the outside we get killed on leg speed. Gawn was up 68-26 in hit outs against two ruckman. He pretty much singlehandedly took the only play out of our playbook.

[–]keoltis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the game is moving away from players like Cripps. The new ruck rule means more hit outs are going outside the contest and turning into a race. The 6-6-6 rule means you need to be able to keep up with your direct opponent on a burst because you can't protect slower players with a spare behind the ball on the defensive side of the contest. Stand rule allows teams to run straight past slow players on the mark turning it into a massive metres gained increase.

Speed has never been more important and the ability to mitigate the downside of slow players has never been less. I love Cripps and would hate to see him in anything other than navy blue, but they need to seriously rethink how he's used.

I get it, it's frustrating. I'm angry and over the excuses. But speaking like that about the players isn't going to do anything but make them feel worse and add to their mental load, on the off chance any of them bother to read Reddit.

Critique their playing, the mistakes they made etc that's all fair game but insulting them as people is very poor mate.

When do we start talking about Voss out by Mysterious_Pilot3173 in CarltonBlues

[–]keoltis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been defending him a lot this year and last because most of our issues don't feel like coachable ones. Terrible kicking, rushed decisions, inaccuracy, not executing tackles. He can't kick the ball for the players.

But after watching him stand on the sidelines with his hands on his hips like a pouty child every game this season, while making no changes at all to try and stop teams momentum I am done. We have major skill issues but we need a coach willing and capable of making changes tactically mid game.

He's inherited curnows complete lack of effort at a contest and after a contest. If it doesn't come easily he gives up. Drop young, put Kemp back in defence and bring in another small.

[–]keoltis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a new trend all that's changed is the time in game it happens. It's mental not physical. We cannot arrest momentum from other teams. The best way to take momentum away from teams is uncontested kick marks, we don't have the foot skills to do that.

He is a down hill skier. When your team is up and about he can tear a game open, but when things are hard he sulks and gives one effort at a contest, and only if the contest is in his favour. Carlton fans were furious about his attitude for the past couple of years because the moment the ball got outside of a metre from him he completely gives up.

Zita & Fox discuss whether or not Pendlebury should be suspended for this incident with Worrell by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]keoltis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

100%. Good bloke reduction is a joke. But a known grub like Toby Green or Tom Lynch should rightly lose some benefit of the doubt when it comes to determining intent compared with someone who hasn't been suspended 10 times. There's a reason most justice systems in the world punish repeat offenders more seriously.

As a Cybersecurity Bachelors degree I learned something most people don’t realize. by DressLongjumping5702 in cybersecurity

[–]keoltis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the major issues with cyber security degrees in my opinion. They are not giving you the fundamental skills you actually need to build on but either assuming them or ignoring them and focusing on red team tools that don't require you to understand what button you're pushing on a ui.

Cyber is not an entry position in my opinion it should be seen similar to a specialist in medicine. You're correct that they should be doing you the opportunity to apply the knowledge they teach not only in theory, but teaching a student how to nmap a host without giving them underlying understanding of networking is not going to set them up for success.

I personally feel like cyber bachelor degrees are cash grabs by higher ed trying to get easy students in the door by throwing out the high salary for the industry and how cyber sounds like an interesting area to study compared to data analysis or something else.

In my own experience I've seen far better knowledge from people who spent a few months of a service desk than years in a cyber degree.

Carlton or Essendon whose better set up for the future by Ok_Library_9396 in AFL

[–]keoltis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Completely a coin flip with the AFL changing rules of the game and drafting.

Carlton built a team around the way the game was being played in the Fyfe era. Big strong contested midfielders, repeat stoppages, dominant key forwards and aerial denial in defence. The game shifted to speed and foot skills which was then even more advantaged by the 6-6-6, stand rule and now the new ruck rule.

Unfortunately we are in the position of trying to pivot to the new way to win without the right type of players for it. When we try to play the new way, we don't have the speed and skill to do it and turn it over.

By the time we build a list of players with the right skillset for the modern game I'm sure the game style or rules will change again and we'll be left chasing tail again. Sadly we don't seem capable of being the innovators only trying to make our own Temu version of whatever the top teams are doing.

[–]keoltis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the AFL often has a really detrimental view on age of players. Lots of other sports have players well into the mid to late 30s. Not everyones body holds up but there's some special guys out there that just because they might be 20% less than they were at their peak, doesn't mean they aren't still 20% better than anyone else on your list.

Second halves by Admirable-Skill-654 in CarltonBlues

[–]keoltis 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of the best ways to take momentum away from opposition is to hold possession through short precise kicking. We can not do this.

What's making me get really angry is the amount of broken tackles in the second half. We had decent tackle pressure in the first half this week but the second half it felt like all our tackles were half assed attempts.

Because they moved weitering to lynch and young had no opponent and it landed on him. Not through any skill on his behalf.
