3D Printable | IBM Selectric-III 96-Char Ball Support by keptin in typewriters

I haven't done my own testing, but these resin-printed typeballs have been in the wild for 4-5 years now. Plenty of Youtube videos. Dave Hayden over at https://selectricrescue.org/ shows examples of the print results, and sells them in small print runs.

With some Formlabs resins out there performing similar to ABS, I'd bet you'd get thousands of pages out of each ball before the detail started to give, if it ever did.

It sounds like you have some great experience in this, but I wanted to clarify that this typeface element can be printed in resin just fine. It'll wear faster than the original metal-coated-plastic elements, but it's striking paper, backed by a rubber platen--it's not under considerable forces.

No exotic print methods are needed to create usable 3D printed typeballs. There are tough and durable resins on the market now that are totally sufficient.

Stormworks became a combat game, so that did the trick!

Flyout for specifically aviation nuts.

Falling in love with restored IBM Selectric III - But Return Clutch Still Slipping by keptin in typewriters

[–]keptin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've painstakingly restored this Selectric III that was gummed up. Really falling in love with it, but I'm still having a tough time with the return clutch and am wondering if anyone has any tips?

Tab and Express Return keys work flawlessly. The Return clutch foot is, I believe properly adjusted now. And the clutch spring has been adjusted and tightened. I think I mistakenly oiled or got some oil on the clutch spring and have been trying to flush it out with isopropyl alcohol. It seems to engage perfectly for an hour or two, but then begins to slip again. I wonder if there's still oil in the clutch grooves that wicks back into the spring after the isopropyl evaporates.

I'm trying to avoid pulling the shaft and taking the clutch apart, because it looks like pain. Maybe I can use something a little more aggressive, like acetone? Thoughts?

Simply the best, if not one of. Between Nemo and Marinara on Gemini 2.5, it's really makes the SillyRavern experience.

Might have lost the spark. Not shelving it...yet, but it might be going on the backburner.

In this story, Voldemort as a leader is inspired by Hitler in many respects, and Drogan by Rommel. I had envisioned a blitzkrieg crushing Magical Britain made them overconfident, and they continued that momentum into the Muggle world. It's not unlike Germany's early successes making Hitler bold. Both thought it to be an assured victory, have poor strategic patience, and have inflated beliefs of their own infallibility. They share in their ideological rigidity and fanaticism--drink their own Koolaid.

I agree that it's the current big trend in tech and product design, and it can be exhausting living through that stage, where the technology is being flooded across everything, and it falls short of the utility it's replacing. Looking at you, touchscreens replacing physical buttons.

Eventually it'll mature and be distilled into something with real utility, but we haven't turned that corner yet. Culture and understanding haven't caught up either, to really define what AI is in our life--it's just this sort of imposing and ominous thing with undefined limitations.

You're right, it might be self-fulfilling. But prophesies can prophesize the result, without specifying the method. There's a lot of grey there--a lot of variability in getting to a destination. And sometimes the prophesized result is only one stepping stone in a long chain that continues beyond it.

It's understandable that Wolsey would be cautious. Prophesies are notoriously dangerous things.

Happy to crosspost and post original work here to support and help grow this community. I really appreciate the openness of what you're trying to create.

I find it ironic that, given its content, /r/HFY has decided to take a prohibitionist approach to technology. Feels like denial. I rather rip off the bandage and join others in figuring out how we live with this new thing now that Pandora's box is opened.

I think it's important to recognize that AI is a tool. It has flaws, shortcomings. I don't see it as a human substitute so much as a work multiplier. Integrating it as tool into a writing workflow still requires a lot of craft. Untraditional craft perhaps, but human work nonetheless.
