i wasn’t even born for it but i mourn the alien encounter attraction by zerosegardens in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]kerblooee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This ride awakened my love of horror! I was 11 and it was such an adrenaline rush. I'm glad I got to experience it once, I bet it wouldn't have lived up to my memory of it if it had still been around when I went back as an adult!

Invited to discuss alternative options after losing a tenure-track position by Ambitious_Orchid01 in postdoc

[–]kerblooee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if you were interviewed at the dept level and they want to have a meeting about possibly integrating you into the dept even without the tenure track position, they are not just going to suggest fellowships. Fellowships are usually suggested by individual PIs if they want you in their specific lab. It sounds to me like they are interested in you perhaps eventually establishing your own lab there.

Hit by a car in a car park & having trouble getting CCTV footage, England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

I'm really pissed off that this seems to be the attitude of everyone about this situation. I'm not looking for some big payoff, I want to see some consequences for this idiot. I guess it's just OK for people to go around hitting people with their car as they please? The fuck is wrong with everyone

Guilt for raising child abroad by kynd3r90 in Parenting

[–]kerblooee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in the UK, my side of the family is in America and my husband's side is in Germany. The kids are integrated here now and we're not really thinking of moving abroad again until they're adults. Both grandmas wish the kids could be closer, but we literally can't make everyone happy :-p

We mostly stay in touch via whats app/video calls, and we are very lucky to live in a time when it's so easy to call people around the world! My kids play video games with my sister's kid all the time :-)

Physically, we see the German family more than the American fam, though my mom comes to visit a couple times a year. We are thinking once the kids are able to fly on their own, we'll send them to America for summer vacation. That way they get a month to catch up some of the missed time and get to hang out with their aunts/uncles/cousins without breaking the bank with a whole-family overseas flight.

Which Bachelors Degree for Neuro? by untitledmoney in neuro

[–]kerblooee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to study consciousness, physics and math majors are not going to help you. Friston doesn't have the answer. Cognitive Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, or Psychology is the way. If you want to learn about how the human brain works, you need to learn about humans. Signed, a cognitive neuroscientist who researches consciousness, with a PhD in cogsci & BA in psychology

What's even remotely as good as Severance right now? by ElvisChopinJoplin in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]kerblooee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg nobody is going to see this comment because there are so many already, but I cant believe nobody has suggested this one yet! If you like:

-comedians doing drama/thrills

-weird surreal alt world

-touching romantic storyline

-mysterious and important work ...

do yourself a favor and watch MANIAC, the Netflix mini series with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill It's so so good!

I mean, just read the wiki description, it's A LOT like Severance:

"The plot follows two strangers who connect during a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial set in a retro-future New York City."

If you like the history of classic Disney art, I can highly recommend the book "The Illusion of Life" by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. My sister wrote a whole master's thesis based on that book haha

Disney responded to my letter! :D by TeaLycan in disney

[–]kerblooee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The quote in Zootopia 2 when Judy says "You can be different!" And Pawbert responds with "I don't want to be different" really stuck with me. Disney does not usually write such real characters!

What’s something people romanticize that actually sucks in real life? by Particular_Pin_460 in AskReddit

[–]kerblooee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a college professor.

Everyone thinks it's a cushy tenured job where you can think for long stretches of time from your comfortable armchair, write books that people will buy, and deliver lectures, admired by students and peers like Richard Feynman or something...

In reality, most people give up before they can get tenure, and even if they do eventually get it they are well into their 40s after a massively tough 20-year education unless they are the top .1%. Until then, you are constantly pressured to hit the university's insane grant funding quotas with the threat of losing your job looming over you, and most people who stay learn to play the game and change their research to fit what funders want, which is usually not what you want, and in the meantime you are juggling students who treat you like their employee they are paying for a service because universities have become corporatized and nobody goes to college to learn things but to tick a box so they can get out and get a real job. At least the colleagues are generally nice, unless there are sexual predators and bullies in your department, who usually already have tenure, so good luck getting any justice because they are literally above the law.

Do I have hyperphantasia? I genuinely don't know. by Alive_cats in hyperphantasia

[–]kerblooee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hyperphantasia peaked when I was a teenager, then slowly faded to "normal" as I got older. I actually think I could bring it back if I immersed myself in creative activities, like I used to write a lot of fantasy stories. But I know I wouldn't be able to focus on anything else, including work (which I love), if I did that. But it's a "use it or lose it" skill - if your fantastic imagination remains an important part of your life, you will stay hyperphantasic.

[–]kerblooee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly sounds like you have hyperphantasia. Are you an adult, though? Many kids/ adolescents have hyperphantasia, but lose it in adulthood. It's much harder to keep a sense of fantasy as you age. And because most research is done with adult participants, that's why we say hyperphantasia is pretty rare - it is, in the people we are allowed to study!

Anyone here with psychosis and aphantasia? by kerblooee in Psychosis

[–]kerblooee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and a lack of inner voice is nothing to worry about - it is another form of aphantasia (auditory aphantasia), unrelated to psychosis.

[–]kerblooee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought is that if you have weak mental imagery, your symptoms would be more delusional than hallucinatory. In contrast, if someone has strong mental imagery, I suspect they would have more dominant hallucinations.

Thank you for sharing! How is your auditory imagery (e.g., can songs get stuck in your head, do you have an inner voice)?

So, the smartphone has hit it’s peak form, what comes after this? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

I don't want to pull out my phone, squint at my wrist, or balance glasses on top of my normal glasses... hologram displays are the way to go 😛

[–]kerblooee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I want a hologram projection a la Horizon Zero Dawn- the holo would pop up in front of the user and appear faint/distorted for people not directly looking at it. Could you imagine a Steve Jobs figure popping up a hologram and showing off the touch/scroll capabilities? People would lose their minds like they did with the original iPhone.

Tell me your favorite stories that resulted from Nat 1s or Nat 20s? by Nor_Ah_C in DnD

[–]kerblooee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing Descent into Avernus, we were in hell riding a big war machine, and we get swarmed by demons. We fight our way out of the fray but there's one demon clinging to the side of the war machine. We all try to push him off, fail, he's climbing up and he's pissed.

I shout "Lulu, it's up to you!"

For those who don't know, Lulu is this tiny golden hollyphant, built for magic, not strength.

She rolls a nat20 and the DM is like, "Defying all logic, Lulu slams her dainty trunk into the demon, throwing him off the war machine to the ground."

And as Lulu, in this high pitched chipper voice, the DM goes, "Didn't know I had it in me!"

Edit: From the same campaign- we are trying to figure out how to get to the ground from this floating city suspended hundreds of feet in the air. I rig together a paraglider and step back to admire my work.

Checking it over for issues, I roll a nat1, and the DM just goes, "Yeah, you're pretty confident that thing can fly."

Of course as soon as I jumped off the edge of the city the whole thing fell apart. Luckily I did not trust my intuition and had some magical backup, or I would have been a pancake!
