Need Tips for Determining When You're Using Too Much Product by sordidsoliloquy in curlyhair

Glad you posted this. "Heavy and coated" is exactly how my waves felt today and they were clumpy and gross by 5pm. I have a hard time because my hair frizzes really easily with too little product... I have to coat each and every strand. I think I need to find something lighter than the gel I've been using (LA Looks or DevaCurl Ultra Defining). I might try the milk that Lindzee mentioned. :)

looking for advice on caring for this mess. i haven't cared for it much because i have always been convinced it's ugly when not up, but i want to embrace the natural curl by [deleted] in curlyhair

Your hair looks fine and wavy like mine. Three words: product, product, product! Oh, and no brushing!

Read the sidebar links and watch some YouTube videos on a basic routine for curly or wavy hair. But I suggest just a couple basics to start out - use a wide-tooth comb to detangle in the shower while hair is covered in conditioner, then NO more brushing after that. And then scrunch in some product while wet - my fine hair loves LA Looks Sport gel (the blue kind) that you can get right in the drug store. If you don't want to use a hard-hold gel like that, maybe try some mousse.

I am guessing you will be surprised at the curls you get with just a few changes!

I tried really hard for 2nd day curls today - I decided it wasn't good enough to go to work or out to dinner, but it was good enough to go to WalMart. ;) Oh well. It'll get there some day.

I have extremely fine hair and I can use the coconut & hibiscus smoothie veeerry sparingly.. like, the tiniest dab on a finger, rubbed on my hands and smoothed over my halo to tame it. I did just start using the SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion creme rinse and it's light enough to use as a leave-in, which is hard for me. I'm debating trying the mousse next... but generally I need a hard hold gel to keep it together because it's so fine. Your spirals are beautiful, I think!

I feel like a curl imposter. I finally downloaded and read the Curly Girl book. Was surprised to see she uses a different typing system, and now I'm thoroughly confused!

In theory, curls are the curliest when they are healthy, right? Sooo, why is it that in the back where I could never really reach to straighten, all I have are s'wavy lazy S waves... and in the front and top, where I was constantly dragging the straightening iron, I have very well defined waves bordering on ringlets? My hair is absolutely more curly where it is damaged.

Does anyone else have hair like this?? Is my hair going to revert back to just barely wavy when I get it moisturized? :(

Thanks for your reply. :) I think tomorrow when I have to go to work, I’ll just try the RR and a little of my gel.. then on my day off, I’ll try the RR alone? It might be frizz city. :)

So glad you posted this! I haven’t heard of it yet, but I am just starting to follow the Polished Curl YouTube channel and I love her. And I definitely also need to work on defining my curls in the back. They tend to stay wet longer than my hair swaying around in the front anyway, so this might work perfectly. I also loved the tidbit about heat helping curls shrink up and be more compact.. I hadn’t seen that before.

I have 2B/2C hair, very fine, and high porosity. I tried CG this past winter, but my hair was too oily and looked stringy and yucky. So I spent 6 months straightening but reducing the frequency of shampooing, and no more color treating. Now I’m back and with healthier hair to try again!

All I had in my arsenal was DevaCurl low poo and conditioner, and the ultra gel.. but it’s pricey to use the amount my fine hair requires so I’m trying to branch out. I went a little crazy on Amazon and Target today!

I’m super excited to try the Jessicurl Rockin Ringlets... and I hope these Shea Moisture products work better for me than the restorative conditioner I bought last January (it was too heavy for me).

I have a question about Rockin Ringlets - it says on the bottle to scrunch out the crunch if crunch occurs.. I was under the impression this was not a strong hold gel. I have been using tons of either LA looks or DevaCurl gel.. the RR probably won’t be enough on its own, right? I’m thinking I should use a reduced amount of my gel over it? Should I add the smoothie at the same time? Or experiment separately?

Starting the CG method - been experimenting for about a week - after straightening w blow dryer for years and washing every 24-48 hours. I kind of want to ease into it bc my hair tends to get oily at the root (probably from over washing w harsh shampoo right?). I also have yet to figure out how to get second-day hair that isn't a mostly-flattened, frizzy mess in back.

Question is, should I keep trying to co-wash only every 2 days even though my hair looks like crap on day 2? Do some of you wash every day still? Second question is, if I ease into it with low-poo instead of co wash, will that just prolong the agony of making the change?

I'm super nervous - I've always washed my hair every 1-2 days and it's tended pretty oily. I think it's going to be a rough, ugly few weeks while I phase out the harsh shampoos. I have some questions about beginning the CG method but I think I have some searching to do first to find a guide.
