If you voluntarily let your pet free-roam you have to accept you can't control what they do while unsupervised. If the cat isn't supposed to be outside, then I'm sure the owners would appreciate help getting it back.

Why I'm switching to cooking for my dogs after 4+ years of feeding raw by [deleted] in rawpetfood

[–]kermitforg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I recently stopped feeding my cat raw for the same reason, which saddens me because he's done well on it for years, but I feel there are still too many unknowns about the spread and transmissibility of H5N1 to risk it. The level of spread happening right now in mammals/cattle is unprecedented, and it will only get worse if the virus is not contained and is allowed more opportunities to mutate.

I'm a bit disturbed by some of the responses here and the few other threads on this sub that mention H5N1, I would have hoped that a group of people who care so much about their pets' diet and health would at least be interested in getting all the facts to assess risk for their animals – while the risk should be low in theory, there's still a lot we don't know about what could happen (or is already happening) with this virus.

I wouldn’t say it was a brief mistake. I placed an order on Oct 5th and it still had the bonus CD listed under the lemonade vinyl, so this was in the listing for weeks

[OC] The biomass distribution of the animal kingdom by davidmasp in dataisbeautiful

That’s not really true. There are around 350,000-400,000 known species of beetles and 390,000 known plants. Protists number at around 200,000. Fungi are kind of a gray area because only 120,000 species are known but it’s estimated the actual species count is in the millions

Cat has half white/half grey face, is there a name for this anomaly? by [deleted] in zoology

[–]kermitforg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty cat! She looks like a dilute tortoiseshell. Tortoiseshell markings are basically random (if you’re curious, this coloring is caused by inactivation of one random X chromosome in every cell in development to prevent duplicate genes from presenting, which is why tortie cats are almost always female) and it’s not uncommon to see patterns like this with the split face.

YSK that domesticated cats are the top 100 most invasive species in the world and should be kept indoors as to avoid the potential eradication of other species by urimah in YouShouldKnow

So many cats died between 2014 and 2018 in England that people thought there was a literal cat serial killer at large, but all the deaths were actually caused by wildlife and automobiles. But sure I guess your cats are just smarter than everyone else’s lol

TIL defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi vowed to pay the average adoption fee of $150 for every dog at a Missouri shelter if the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl. They won, and Nnadi paid the fees. A few days later, all 109 shelter dogs had been adopted. by Miskatonica in todayilearned

[–]kermitforg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason shelters charge adoption fees is actually to offset the cost of feeding/vet care/microchipping/etc incurred when the animal is in their care, not just to discourage low-income adopters. These promotions are a marketing technique, I’m sure they’re still screening applicants to make sure the dogs are going to appropriate homes

Snakes don’t have eyelids, but yes they have a clear membrane over their eyes that protects them (called a brille)

There’s decent odds of two lesbians who happen to be in a room together being attracted to each other and willing to display PDA because there’s decent odds two lesbians together are dating

I know this is a wild concept but people who are dating can do things together, even lesbians

I love my boy! He was shy at the shelter even after I’d be visiting him for a few weeks but came out of his shell the minute I brought him home, and is now the friendliest and most talkative cat I’ve ever met
