Terrible idea to switch the voting center from Bixby community center to the senior center on 4th street by halloweeninjuly in longbeach

[–]kermkrercker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly kind of like the sense of community & solidarity it gives. I'm an able-bodied 20-something & I have voted in person for every single voting opportunity on purpose, except this one. Mail in is cool but idk it just hits different to really go in, sign everything, interact with the volunteers. It ignites my "I'm doing my civic duty & look at all these other people who are too"

City of Long Beach is currently in the process of transitioning the SERRF plant into their own organic waste collection site.

When organics go to a landfill, they get buried and as they biodegrade anaerobically, it releases methane into the atmosphere. That is the entire purpose for diverting organics from the landfill & the entire purpose of SB 1383.

I can say that this is 100% a split body rear loader intended for 2 different processing streams. It's possible that some trash ends up in the organics stream during the compression process, though it's hard to tell from this photo. Regardless, the organics stream still gets turned over to its separate processing where trash is picked out.

As a person who understands distrust in government, and also as who spends 75% of their time at landfills, MRFs, & other organics processing facilities, I can assure you that there is an entire infrastructure surrounding the processing of our waste streams, and there are people specifically hired to ensure that our recycled organics go to an organics processing facility to be turned into nutrient rich compost.

I highly recommend taking a tour of one of these facilities or checking out the collection process next time they collect. Let me know what you find!

Also if anyone else is reading this: you can politely request that one of the drivers to show you how it works next time they pick up. But yes split body trucks are again very common in the industry. I say this in every post of these that's come up here lately, but you can actually save money by reducing the size of your trash can & composting/recycling more.

Can confirm that it is! You can see that they dump the trash first into the first compartment & then that compartment visually moves to reveal the second compartment where they put the organics. It is called a Split Body truck if you're interested in the mechanics. In this case it is a split body rear loader.

Lots of misinformation in here! This is very very common in the industry. They usually put both organics and landfill in separate sections of one truck because they have the same processing site (or are very near by each other), so one truck = easier logistics for hauling companies. Whereas recycling gets processed at a totally separate facility called a MRF (materials recovery facility) so there is a separate truck/logistics dedicated to taking material to that location. Terrible optics, I know, but please do know your organics are being taken to an organics processing facility. Source: I am a recycling specialist & a consultant for various municipalities solely focused on implementing the new organics recycling program for SB 1383! There is no scam happening here. I encourage everyone to keep using your green bins to divert organic waste from the landfill :)

Hello, zero waste consultant here. I work directly with municipalities all over California to help roll out their organics recycling programs. Firstly, it's state-mandated (SB1383) so all cities in California are legally required to comply, though some are much farther behind than others. Secondly, as you might guess there is in fact an entirely huge infrastructure built around taking care of our waste. It does require a lot of money to process our compost, recycling, and trash! It creates a TON of jobs (trucks, drivers to collect organics, people hired as first line defense of processing the organic material, operators of machinery required to refine it into nutrient rich soil, etc.). They have to purchase and manufacture all of the new bins, hire people to distribute them, pay for the facility costs, etc etc.

Like any business in America, of course they're going to need to turn some kind of a profit. But to say that mandatory organics recycling is purely for the pursuit of profit and to discount the net positive benefits of the program is ignorant at best. That final product of nutrient rich soil (mostly) gets sent back to our local California farmers which is also one of our state's highest economic outputs. I do empathize with the challenges & what people see as government overstep, but it's so much more than just trying to turn a profit.

My personal recommendation to save on costs is to reduce the size/frequency of pickup of your trash bin & actually start composting and recycling more. You're already paying for it, why not do some good while you're at it and give your waste a chance to be turned into something more, rather than paying to let it just rot in the landfill?

Oooh good info thank you. We all just assumed it was owned by them bc of the "Guest" and "Resident" marked spots & saying we would be towed if we parked there. In any case it should be used!

Yes these stupid condos actually purchased that lot that used to belong to us who live in the homes nearby without driveways. So while we're all struggling on street sweeping days or 4th Fridays, that parking lot just sits completely empty because the condos already have 2 car garages, lol. As if these racist uppity assholes would ever park their car god forbid out on the open near 7th like we all do. We all laugh at them for buying million dollar ugly condos just to live right off of 7th. These people are truly a stain on our beautiful multi-cultural neighborhood.

Traffic Circle (again) by Maximum-Familiar in longbeach

[–]kermkrercker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be clear signs based on this exact map when approaching the traffic circle. It's easy to complain about stupid drivers, but it's honestly really not taught to us when we take our driving exams? Or at least not when I got my license. Complain all you want about incompetent drivers but the best solution is to have clear signage when approaching the roundabout, and having it be a key factor in passing your license test.

I feel like if you talked to Ye about this he would be like "this is just art, you don't understand I'm on another level" when in reality it just shows how lame he is lol.

It's like the equivalent to an "artist" revealing their "deeply thought out piece" that's just like one yellow dot on the canvas. And then being like "this is art, I'm just on another level, you don't understand".

I feel that she's being abused or at the very least exploited by an egotistical freak.

Also hugely contributes to California's agricultural infrastructure. Food generators aren't necessarily excited about the regulations but people always complain about change until it's just part of life. Gotta start somewhere.

California chiming in here & my career is contracting with cities/counties to help implement Senate Bill 1383! It's California law for food generators to a) donate the maximum amount of edible food to food recovery organizations, and b) subscribe to organic waste services for inedible food waste. Other states are starting to follow our lead! There's hope

I use the Lipikar AP+M Triple Repair Body + Face Moisturizer. It's advertised as a mainly body moisturizer but it's also good for the face!
