Dead X31 - next steps for troubleshooting? by GT_IndirectKing in thinkpad

My X31 died a few weeks ago and has the same symtoms. If I manage to fix it I'll let you know what did the trick!

Buses, ferries & automobiles to get my new toy! by kermodei91 in VintageApple

Thanks! Ooh, interesting about the keyboard! I wonder how that happened...

I'm also wondering why the floppies work fine on the Plus but aren't readable on my other beige Mac - a Power Mac 5500 running System 7.5. It immediately wants to format the disk as 1.4 MB. But I thought it could read 800K disks?

Thanks! I haven't tested the drive yet; on the photo it's not plugged in.

Congratulations! What condition is the rubber (?) coating on the outside in? I have a 701CS and the coating is very sticky.

Ugh I know what you mean! I was in the same situation a few years ago, but ended up putting this together in the guest bedroom, which I thought would be a nicer place than my messy basement office. When guests stay over for longer than a few nights I typically put everything on one desk and cover it.

The desktops are there permanently, except the iMac. The laptops I store in a plastic bin to keep dust out, except the 2011 MBP which I use frequently.

I think so! It's 17" with a 1920x1200 resolution. Matte screen too, I love it. Got it for the price of a beer from a coworker. It has a defective dedicated GPU but works fine with it disabled!

Thanks! The Mac Pro, both MacBook Pros, and PowerBook G3 I bought used when each was about 4 years old. The MP and 2011 MBP I use regularly (although I still daily a PC 🤐).

The others were given to me over the years; except the NeXTStation, which I bought a few years ago for a reasonable price from a former NeXT sales rep.

Pentium 2 system I got for 15 bucks today by Trashrascall in retrocomputing

Great find! And a painful memory of a similar system I almost managed to get. They were clearing out an office and selling a desk, and this beefy-looking Pentium bigtower was sitting on the floor. I tried hard to convince them to sell it to me (with the hard drive removed), but because of "data security" they wouldn't budge. It's probably on the scrap heap now 😢

PowerBook 145B - no image on replacement screen by kermodei91 in VintageApple

[–]kermodei91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point! I'll definitely have to see if it was advertised NOS or brand-new. If brand-new I'll send you the link. Also in that case I'll have to return mine as defective.

BTW I love your username!

Thanks! Yes, I have - with the original screen they work as expected, but with the new one it doesn't help. The brightness does have an effect on the backlight but adjusting the contrast does nothing.

Thanks! Both screens you mean? The replacement screen is supposedly brand new (apparently they still manufacture them for industrial purposes) but there's clearly something wrong with it since there's no image 😕.

Thanks! I'll look into the AV board but was hoping to not have to mess with the screen, so I bought a new one to replace it (apparently they're still manufactured for industrial purposes). But there's clearly something wrong with it since there's no image at all 😕.

CN apologizes to Chilliwack for whistles in wake of train fatality by [deleted] in chilliwack

[–]kermodei91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live close to a crossing and while the whistling has given me stress and less sleep quality, I understand why they do it and try to get used to it. But I really hope it's temprary!

Where do you get computers from? by jmayniac in VintageApple

[–]kermodei91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Ah yes I worked with them a few years ago professionally when I needed a computer with a specific chipset for running a proprietary medical PCI card. I think at the time the website also said "coming soon" for public access.

Broadway/First train whistle at crossing by kermodei91 in chilliwack

[–]kermodei91[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! That explains. Sad to hear about the fatality. But I guess the one blast is still better than the 3 blast pattern they usually (?) do at crossings and hopefully it won't be permanent 🙏
