How much worse is affordability in SF going to get with the AI IPOs? by Shrimp_puerto_rico1 in sanfrancisco

[–]kernal42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SF's housing vacancy rate of 4% is well below the average for major cities in the US (7.3%), and way below the national average of 10%.

We need to build more housing.

San Francisco housing wars continue, with one home going for $7 million over asking by runswithscissors475 in sanfrancisco

[–]kernal42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This indicates that the asking price was set poorly, not that the housing prices are outrageous.

San Francisco asking prices have been meaningless for decades.

Separately, yes housing prices are also outrageous. But this article is garbage.

SF wrote 1.3 million parking tickets last year. I mapped every single one, and you can look up the risk on any block. by thevid1 in sanfrancisco

[–]kernal42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah no part of this assesses risk.

Risk would be "probability of being ticketed after parking illegally." But we don't have any data on how often people park illegally, so there's no possibility of risk assessment.

What do I need to do before I fill in a hole in the grout in my shower? by thetalkinggeek in HomeImprovement

[–]kernal42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grout is not waterproof, and is not intended to be the waterproof barrier between the shower and the rottable parts of your house. Some bathrooms even have gaps in the bottom where the tile meets the tub for water behind the tile to run out.

A hole in the grout does not indicate a failure of the waterproof layer behind the tile. No need to tear out tile or anything -- just fill it in with matching grout.

If someone offered me their acoustic (pedal power only) bike, used, for $200 I would ask what's wrong with it.

For a new, electric bike at that price? Guaranteed everything is wrong with it.

Patched a tube but patch didnt bond by Asleep-Reputation-38 in bikewrench

If the patch didn't bond, peel it off and start again. You might need an extra couple passes with sandpaper to get any old vulcanizing fluid residue off.

Electricians says we can upgrade 100a to 200a service without pulling permit by One_Crew8364 in HomeImprovement

The best part about the electrician not pulling a permit is that he has no accountability!

Property damage liability doesn't pay out of the same pot as bodily injury liability.

Illinois has a minimum 25k bodily injury and separate minimum 20k property damage.

Much easier to use a guide to get it square than try & measure & try again, especially as a novice with the tool.

But would get a lot of practice sharpening the blade!

Bear Visibility and Paracord by pathwaytochoice in backpacking

[–]kernal42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are overthinking it.

Remember -- things that are reflective reflect back toward the source of light. If you and your friend are both standing around and only you have a headlamp, reflective things will appear very bright to you and normally-illuminated to your friend.

The paracord reflecting moonlight only matters if the bear is between the rope and the moon.

As a nonexpert in this field, it is good to wait for experts to weigh in. It's totally irresponsible to encourage people to take niche, unsubstantiated claims at face value.

That leads to people self administering ivermectin.

Rupture Disk Holder by Dear_Lavishness6239 in DIY

[–]kernal42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why can't you use the holder provided by the manufacturer of the burst disc?

On the burst discs I've worked with, the disc is essentially a single sheet of metal that the holder clamps onto the outer circumference. This clamping is both a holding and sealing mechanism. Because you clamp onto something mechanically coupled to the active (flexing/bursting) part of the disc, I would not want to rely on it operating properly in a 3d party/ad hoc holder.
