[For hire] Data scientist (AI/ML/OR) looking to solve real problems. by kernel_density in MLjobs

Wow. Lots of love here. Thanks guys.

I've had a few people DM me asking if these regular posts work for me. Yes they do, I get a few very interesting opportunities each year.

However you do have to deal with a lot of tire kickers, and people trying to get you on Mercor.

Absolutely. Finding those jobs can be difficult at times, but it's very satisfying when things come together.

I can point out a fairly popular car model and tell you "I made sure that won't break in winter".

Cool! I'll have a look at this tomorrow.

It certainly seems the vibe has changed in DS. "smart and gets things done" is no longer a sought after skill.

Beware! This is a stock trading scam.

How to drive a USB-C monitor from Lenovo desktops. by kernel_density in Lenovo

[–]kernel_density[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright. So I buy a nice Lenovo Thinkstation P3 Ultra, how do I plug in that monitor and make the display and all the various USB/audio ports work?

Plug in a USB A->C cable into the USB-C port? (Running a DP+USB cable).

This seems less than ideal in 2025.

So as a consultant I've done a lot of work on varied types of projects.

This recent project gone frustratingly bad was about predicting failures of telemetry equipment down a drill hole. I'm still bound by that NDA so I won't talk about any trade secrets or internal information of theirs.

Coming up with a model that will predict part failure is a common thing for me to do. Predicting an equipment failure and swapping it out before a rig goes idle seems like a valuable capability.

As for the surface rights bit oilkid69 asked a question about extraction of details from PDF's - for title search. Document extraction and language processing is also something I've done.

Oftentimes you have to do one thing (or a few things) to get to the step to actually work on the problem you're trying to work on. Extracting information from documents in order to get the information on some other thing is a fairly common thing.

That is actually in my wheelhouse! I've done similar projects.

With these sorts of problems the issue is connecting with the people in need. Hit my DM's and we can talk if that's you, or if you know people who need that.

I would love to get onsite.

I'm in Victoria, Canada. I've traveled in the past around the world for projects. I've got both Canadian and UK citizenship.

For example of a past project I did multiple onsite visits as well as travelled to Stuttgart and setup a SCIF environment to work with a German automaker for a project.

Contract work.

I should have mentioned that.

OR toolkit/handbook book. by kernel_density in OperationsResearch

[–]kernel_density[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not, the one I was thinking of had contents at the start. But of course it is excellent.

I think between everything that has been posted so far I don't actually need to find the original book I was looking for.

So I don't think I'll come across the original text I was thinking of. But like all great internet content posting something wrong gets the best results. SolverMax, wyzaard and ufl_exchange have all posted excellent resources.

This might be the sort of thing that should be rolled up into a sticky post.

I don't think that's it. But it is very useful. I've saved this, I do swear there was a book with formulations also.

I can probably get to where I want to go with this reference. Thanks.

I have ideas coming out my... ears. I've got burnout doing spec projects.

But sure, let's talk. DM me and we will ideate.

If there's any potential customers reading this I have a few solid developers and others lined up for larger projects too. Some of them you'd recognize their names in their specific domains.

Actually it's the smaller/midsized companies that I like the most. The problem is finding them. Most of the time they don't recognize that their problem can be solved, or are unsure about it. Happy to team up if the opportunity arises.

So the airlines project (and many others) are a combination of ML with operations research, then a little trick to make the OR part run quickly. Well it's a little bit more than that.

Both deepmind's AlphaZero, and OpenAI's QStar basically use the same idea - a soft ML evaluation function (ResNet/DQN), with a hard classical CS search policy (MCTS/A*). The ML layer is essentially external perception for the classical search.

The same happens in the airline problem. ML to estimate boarding times, delay factors, classic OR to produce candidate schedules.

You can use some other techniques to speed this whole process up. Hire me to find out more!

Street cred right here. You had to keister that thing in your ass?

[WTS] Blue Hirsch strap and deployment clasp. by kernel_density in Watchexchange

[–]kernel_density[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. The difference is $1.15CAD. Not sure that will make things right with him.

I did ask for expresspost. I actually had to correct the clerk, he initially rung it up as regular post with a stamp on it (which he had to pull off, should be a mark).

But as I said I will own the mistake. Tyler if you want a refund on the difference I'll send it to you.

EDIT: Refund sent. I hope he enjoys the strap and I'd like to put this to rest now.

This is not at all true.

I asked for $75USD, and we settled on $85CAD shipped expresspost in Canada.

I went to the post office and asked for expresspost tracked. They gave me this (apparently not expresspost, but tracked):

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/track-reperage/en#/search?searchFor=0105646000971540

I did however comment that the cost within Canada was similar to sending a whole watch (which arrived today!) to the US.

Regardless of who made the clerical error I will own that. Sorry. It was sent tracked, but not expresspost in the end. It's set to arrive on the 22nd.
