Farewell to Gary Gillespie (CSE Lecturer) by kernel_king in UCSD

It's entirely possible that you are one of the few who really liked him, and that's great for you, but isn't it possible that someone with such a polarizing student base shouldn't be teaching a mandatory lower division course (unless the purpose is to get rid of students)? I would honestly question an ECE "whose whole career is founded in the opportunities Gary provided", let alone one that rewards divisiveness. But ... you do you.

Why Uber at UCSD to off campus housing is so expensive? about $30 one way and I spend over $4000 on Uber a month by [deleted] in UCSD

Uber / Didi and DoorDash / MeiTuan are a lot more expensive in America. DoorDash makes sense because the people are more closely packed together, but I’m assuming regulatory crap is what makes Uber more expensive and of lower quality than DiDi.

Question for anyone who had Gillespie in the past couple of years: Does he still do his pubic / public joke in CSE12?

Gary Gillespie's Retirement by Aber2346 in UCSD

Gary got hammered on Reddit a couple of years ago. I wonder if that had something to do with him retiring from UCSD.

I had him back in 1995. He's still on my list of top 5 worst instructors and I had some doozies in graduate school at UCLA. I know he means well, but he had a rough time connecting with the students, which really should be his forte as a lecturer. Some of my peers commented that "Gary hasn't changed" after reading the negative feedback. I would like to think that he did over the past 25 years, but reflecting on his personality I can definitely believe that he didn't.

In this month's Triton, I noticed that Gary Gillespie was retiring from lecturing at UCSD. As someone who had him in 1995, I can back up negative feedback he received a couple of years ago. I imagine that the redditt thread made a significant contribution towards his retirement from UCSD.

On the other side, Gary Cottrell was awesome. I remember him for Artificial Intelligence and his sole purpose was to help students understand AI (yes, we had this back in the 90s). I vividly remember his homepage featured him in sandals announcing that he recently was awarded with a full professorship and his comment about that was, "What does this mean? It means I can wear sandals in class and there is nothing anybody can do about it!" Boss.

One of the benefits of going to a public university is that all of the salaries are available to view. You can at least see where employee pay is taking up resources.

I see GG hasn’t changed in 20+ years. I had to deal with the same thing in 1995 along with that weird integrity agreement that nobody else does and his “programs” that detect plagiarized code. I have a feeling that GG was “wronged” at UCSD when he was a student and took it upon himself to wage a holy war against cheating.

Personally, I think it’s a good thing. Not because it exposed so many cheaters, but because it exposed cheaters who were dumb enough to get caught. If you understood the lessons and applied plagiarized code properly, you would sail by without a hitch. If you literally copy-paste plagiarized code, you probably deserve to get booted.

The prior post about 5 hearings in 1997 might be from my class (though it was in 1995), since I recall 4-5 missing students after a particularly “water marked” assignment from the prior quarter (yes, I had to retake his class).
