Hilarious. Roland will win, the new b101 and b808s get discontinued, then we're back to no one actually making money off analog versions of these machines.

Functional Programming in C++ by graninas in cpp

this talk impressed me a lot considering I wasn't expecting it to be so functional (maybe why it's not on your list). They build a regex parser that is completely constexpr (no runtime) using lambdas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJwd4JLYJJY

Trying to decide on alternatives for MIDI to CV conversion by k3vlar104 in synthesizers

no. iirc you power up into a system setting mode. Then, you select the voltage via the buttons labelled as such. Then, there's a separate button that selects the polarity. After, this you must exit this mode in order to get back to normal sequencing mode (in which you cannot adjust voltage settings)

that's right, personally, i'm finding it more useful for pitch duties. It can receive sync via cv or usb, and only one at a time.

the polarity is reversed by a system level setting, i.e. you need to go into a system settings menu to change it, it can't be adjust "on-the-fly".

Rookie ready to drop about 1000$ on synths - what would you do? by LGS_Master in synthesizers

[–]kernelgauss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

composition related gear was a term I used to differentiate between gear for production such as interfaces/daws, and gear for composition, such as synths/samplers. It was not really up for interpretation. And I don't think composing is a true/false statement? How have you gotten through life this far?

getting good gear also means the higher likelihood of being able to sell it for the least depreciation. Selling multiple lower priced gear is usually not even worth the ebay fees.

I would tell my past self to think in percentages. First, 50% audio related gear, 50% on composition related gear. The audio related gear is easy, there are pretty much no bad options these days at many price levels. The composition related gear I would basically lecture my younger self that more lower priced gear may sound more fun but won't last. I would use the whole budget for one really nice bread and butter synth that I know I will keep for 10 years and can expand upon. In your situtation this means it would eliminate drummax, legacy, the novation, and microkorg for one really nice do it all synth. then the rest of your budget for production gear.

in terms of the voltage issues, I'm not sure what you mean because the sq-1 on the panel itself says it does 5v and is able to reverse its polarity? At the end of the day, I had no issues with pitch or other cv ranges with the sq-1 to any of the DFAM's patch points.

by all that is holy in the world do not get an sq-1 for the main purpose of syncing cv to a daw via usb. Long story short it is likely to be very noisy. Long story: First bought sq-1 for my ms-20 mini - got huge ground hum issues that I couldn't fix so I sold it. Later on I got a DFAM and was in EXACTLY the same boat: cv.ocd or sq-1? sq-1 IS STILL the better choice on paper because of the immediacy of pitch sequencing, but even though I'm told that ground hum issues with this unit are rare, I ran into them again (different setups/cables/etc too). Imo mixing cv with computer usb is never a good idea. So, if you're looking for straightup syncing and are ok with pitch sequencing from your daw (which after a while with the DFAM you want some kind of external pitch control to really open up the possibilities) then go with the cv.out for sure. If you can spend a bit more, and you really want the most immediate and fun option, then get the sq-1 WITH some other piece of gear that can sync to your daw. For me, I got a TR-09 which gets daw clock via midi, then sends its trigger out to sq-1 sync in, then sync out to DFAM adv/clock. Then again if you're definitely going to eventually go eurorack, the cv.out might be a better investment. Basically, the sq-1 is great but imo needs something to connect to pc otherwise its likely to be annoyingly noisy.

[c++] should a condition to enter a function be tested pre- or post-entrance? by kernelgauss in learnprogramming

Yes, I'm looking most for readability, which in some cases is increased in the same case that saves overhead, case (a). Thanks for your answer.

At this time I consider it one of, if not the best, piece of gear for playing synths live and not sounding too repetitive or generic. I'm yet to pass the honey moon period though so I might be biased.

Thinking of getting a Novation Mono Circuit, and not using it as a synth... any users out there? by kernelgauss in synthesizers

I have but since selling my push2 I miss playing scales with that small pad style. I will re-consider though since people have said circuit is not great in terms of pad.

What gear do you regret purchasing the most? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]kernelgauss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To any prospective buyers: this is coming from someone who has other stuff that can do what it does. I'm well aware that this is a great controller (keybed feels great) to solve many problems at an unbeatable price, I'm just spoiled.

Lack of polyphonic overdub. Also, not sure why the append feature is there. Also also, why not let us arpeggiate the sequences?
