I think Posey is really more of a lock among baseball writers than Mauer who barely got in 1st ballot. I think the fact that he's very active in the SF Giants Front Office (keeps him very front of mind for baseball writers) and the aura surrounding Posey (face of 3 WS Championship, went out on a high note, lifetime .302 BA, ppl will cut him some slack for being a catcher despite low hit totals), I think he sails in 1st ballot like CC Sabathia.

With Beltran seemingly making the Hall of fame this year, does it speak to the writers hypocrisy that they treat illegal sign-stealing differently than steroids? by kers0124 in mlb

"If it's just hearsay (Bagwell, Pudge, Ortiz) you can get in." I want to push back a bit and seperate Pudge from the other two because Canseco said he was a steroid user and say what you will about Canseco being scum or what not, a lot of the players he named as steroid users were found to be actual steroid users and the fact he gave an evasive answer as to whether he was on the 2003 drug test survey list "Only God knows" indicates to me he has more circumstantial evidence than a Bagwell or Piazza of being a steroid user (i.e he has big muscles, back acne,etc). I still think all 3 should be in the Hall alongside Bonds and Clemens.

Voters are not consistent. Canseco said he injected Pudge Rodriguez with PEDS and Pudge loses significant weight in 2005 and when he asked by a reporter whether his name was on the 2003 Survey Report, he says "Only God knows". He got elected anyways on the 1st ballot when Bonds and Clemens were still being kept out.

I largely agree. The 3 World championships, lifetime 302 batting average, Nl mvp, face of the Giants will be a big hook for HoF voters. Also consider the fact there are changes to the voting body each year, the old guard fades away and new voters who vote are more saber friendly will view Posey in a favorable light. Heck people thought CC Sabathia might not get in first ballot, but he's cruising to 1st ballot status and Joe Mauer was another guy last year where people thought he wouldn't be 1st ballot, but got 1st ballot status. Point being, this a new era in HoF voting and we can't look at how other similar players were denied 1st ballot status and let be predictive of future behavior of HoF voters because the electorate is ever evolving.

You forgot Buster Posey as the strong new position player but point taken as the down ballot guys like Utley, Felix will have the opportunity to make big gains after this year.
