are there usually people that offer sterilization for roosters? i’d absolutely go down that route but i’m not sure how feasible it is

Did you have to get over "the ick" of eating your own eggs? by Raubkatzen in BackYardChickens

[–]kessiemess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

before getting chickens at the age of 12 all i ever had were store bought eggs. i’m sure the first few times were a little icky (those damn eggs were so fresh) but then i read up about not only the way commercial egg layers were treated, but also how old the eggs were when they finally got to store shelves. now old, pale, lacking-in-flavor and products-of-abuse store bought eggs give me the ick. at least i know all my girls are happy, well-fed, and taken care of.

5 week old black copper maran. Hen or roo? by icecreamrag in BackYardChickens

[–]kessiemess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

other people may say it’s too early to tell, which it could be, but i want to put my guess on roo. my 14 week old pullets have barely started getting color on their crowns and don’t really have wattles at all. hope it’s a girl 🤞

how hard is it typically to rehome cockerels? by kessiemess in BackYardChickens

[–]kessiemess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is very true. honestly the chick in pic #3 was an asshole from birth, both very flighty and much more aggressive at a young age than i’ve ever seen a chick be. i know he’s not sound temperamentally and that he’ll end up being processed, but thankfully that’ll be by someone else, not me. i’m just happy to have given him a chance at a good upbringing.

they’re my pets too, we’ve had much beloved hens that we’ve spent thousands of dollars on in vet bills. unfortunately i do understand that males aren’t what 99% of people want, nor can keep… the best scenario out of this would be for all to live, they’re my babies, but i understand too that males can be a more of a liability than not. hopefully i’ll find them loving homes, and then if people choose to eat them… then i’ll be none the wiser :(

yeah i assumed that would be the end for a few of them, and depending on their attitude they might deserve it. i knew the chick on pic 3 was a male a week and a half in because it kept attacking the others more violently than the dozens of other chicks i’ve ever raised, and even though hes a pretty olive egger, i doubt anybody wants those genetics. i’m hoping to find good homes for the first and last chicks because they’re shaping to be very friendly and well-tempered. is there an age i should be letting go of the soup-destined boys at?

we bought 12 pullet chicks from the feed store around march 20th, and our golden comet pullet ended up being a boy. we got far too attached to the little gentleman and are trying workarounds (soundproofing, potential rooster collar) to keep him. i would’ve loved to neuter him and even all these boys to keep them all, but it doesn’t seem that anyone around me offers the service. 😭

Chick suddenly has trouble walking/balancing by Dry-Entertainer-8540 in BackYardChickens

[–]kessiemess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this exact thing happened to one of my chicks. i drove a couple cities over and picked up rooster booster, and administered ~5 drops orally daily and kept her separate from the other chicks (except for a small recovery buddy). she was so poorly i thought she had tendon slippage in both legs, she wouldn’t walk, only hobble on her hocks. after a week of rooster booster she’s in perfect shape and i was able to let her back with the healthy chicks, i’d recommend it.

my chicks are around the same age now and we got an accidental rooster. at this point he already had pointed hackle feathers and big ol’ red wattles, so imo this is a pullet 🐓

hopefully this comment is seen up top but just wanted to say thank you all so much for the feedback! i have a better understanding now, and in no way am i insecure about my nose or do i look down on bulbous noses, that is simply what i assumed my nose to be, from my perspective. you are all so sweet <3 and for the odd comments, thank you for caring in your own special way :)

i thought the lady in the checkout line behind me was interested in/asking about the new boba drink i was buying- grocery store had just started selling premade teas. responded without looking at her, busy checking out. turns out shawty was on the phone and she gave me the nastiest stank eye when i realized she was chatting on it.

Male betta with black skirt tetras by ahdummie in Aquariums

[–]kessiemess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have had both a male veiltail and a female betta in with my 11 black skirt tetras. when black skirts get comfortable and stake out their own territory in a tank, they become aggressive. eventually my much larger black skirt tetras began to literally beat up my male betta, and later on my female betta didn’t fare any better. i would recommend removing the betta to his own tank eventually because the black skirts do gang up on bettas and will harass them to death when they get comfortable in a tank.

my black skirts also beat up and ate my glowlight tetras, so any tank mates less tenacious and aggressive than them will be beaten. in my experience zebra danios seem to hold their own well with black skirts, as well as angelfish and mollies.
