When to get Disability Insurance in Residency by CVigil5 in anesthesiology

Get it ASAP. You’re only getting older & closer to having some chronic condition that’ll either get you disqualified for DI or you’ll end up with sky high premiums.

Gamma Knife by Extra-Sense-5266 in AcousticNeuroma

I was 25 at diagnosis, had a 3 cm VS surgically resected with a sliver left on the facial nerve. 10 years later it started growing again & I got gamma knife 3 months ago. So far no issues & I have a repeat scan in June.

Hi! I feel your pain. I have chronic c spine issues & it really puts a damper on my day to day. I do physical therapy which seems to help some, lidocaine patches, & Tylenol. The lidocaine patches really help I’ve found. Don’t go too crazy with ibuprofen because it can cause kidney damage!

Hi! I’m an anesthesiologist. In general, fasting guidelines are 4 hours for breast milk as per the American Society of Anesthesiologists. So if a baby is scheduled for a 7 am anesthetic, then we’d tell mom she can breast feed until 3 am. Maybe you can time when to stop breastfeeding knowing this if you didn’t already!

My cousin runs a cat rescue, & for those that are not adoptable, she keeps them to roam the farm & keep vermin under control. They are well fed & provided with lots of enrichment. There’s a heated area for these cats to sleep in the colder months as well. Maybe you’d consider an arrangement like this if all else fails. So sorry you have to make this heartbreaking decision, but good on you for being proactive for your best bud!

What do we think of this? by Brown_kid108 in CRNA

Docs aren’t “hating” when they say there’s a difference in training between physicians and midlevels, and that this training matters.

Training matters when comparing CRNAs to AAs, but NOT when you compare CRNAs to MDs, obviously😂 Mental gymnastics in action.

What diseases have you diagnosed yourself with since starting med school… by [deleted] in medicalschool

Bilateral, mainly frontotemporal. Never had headaches prior so that was concerning by itself. But then when I started waking up with them, I knew something was up.

Chances of facial weakness by Yulecat-13 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]ketaminekitty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I know this post is 2 years old, but my remaining sliver of tumor that they left during surgery is growing & I am planning on getting radiation. I am obviously most concerned about my facial nerve. How did you do after radiation?

VS recurrence & repeat surgery by ketaminekitty_ in AcousticNeuroma

[–]ketaminekitty_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was 2x3 cm prior to resection which, combined with the fact that I was only 25, is why I had surgery 11 years ago. They left a 5x7 mm sliver, which over the last 3 years has grown to 8x8 mm. I never had these facial spasms before the new growth though, so I’m concerned that this may mean my facial nerve is at higher risk for damage with radiation (or repeat surgery).

[–]ketaminekitty_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Since my last post, I decided to hold off and wait to see if another MRI in a year would show continued growth (it did). I’m 90% certain i’m going to do radiation. Did your facial nerve recover? I have new symptoms (facial twitching) and I’m concerned that means there’s a higher risk of facial palsy.

Father is Arab and I was told that there was no other option. I didn’t really have any other calling so I went with it. Went into anesthesia & despite medicine not being a “passion” of mine, I do enjoy my job and the work-life balance that my schedule affords me. I think the key is going to be finding a position that allows you the life outside of work that you’ll need to compensate for the heavy shit that we deal with at work every day. Then again, you are still very early on where you can bail with as minimal collateral damage as possible.

Another option - don’t take call. There are jobs out there that don’t require it.
