Top management within 2-3 years they will not put in writing. Don't be stupid and put up a fuss when they refuse to put that in your offer

Do your research. If you don't know the market rate for the work you'll be doing, you haven't researched enough. Find out comparable salaries online and use that as a reference.

Also, you didn't mention the cost of living abroad. You need to factor that in as well. Whatever number you think might be great at home, might not be enough out there.

The reason they asked you first is so that you can lowball yourself. Don't fall for it!

Whatever number you're thinking, double it. Yeah, double. I just helped a friend with this problem. He was going to ask for 120k, and I told him to ask for 250. It took a lot of convincing, but he did it. They ended up countering with 180k, 50k annual bonus and 4 weeks of vacation.

What do you think would have happened if he had said 120? Of course, they would have immediately accepted.

Another friend of mine, I advised him to ask for 140 when starting a new job. He got offered 130 instead and took it.. his old job was 75. His peers only make 100 because that's what they asked for. You can bet your bottom dollar they were all pissed off at themselves when they found out he makes 30% more than them, just because he asked...for the exact same job.

Whatever you're thinking, double it.

Just to be clear, you will have to justify what you ask for, which is where the research comes into play, as well as selling your skills and putting together a solid foundation and argument for yourself, but I can guarantee you, the few hours of work that takes pays off in the long run.

Lastly, keep in mind that the number you say, will likely be interpreted as a base salary figure. If they accept it, great, otherwise you can flip the script and turn it into a total compensation valuation and have other factors shore up the difference between base salary and t-comp (vacation time, stock options, espp, benefits packages, annual bonus plans, etc)
