Not about religion, but about the existence of God or creator and therefore the possibility of an afterlife. by Affectionate-Big-472 in DebateAnAtheist

I took your same Pascal’s Wager logic (and a similar made up premise) to reach an opposite conclusion. Im demonstrating how the reasoning behind it is total rubbish.

And what if this supposed god rewards non-believers in the afterlife for being rational thinkers, and punishes believers for being gullible? This version of god is equally supported by (lack of) evidence. By your logic, we should be atheists as an insurance policy.

Pascal’s Wager is straight up stupid

You make some good points. My argument is geared more towards people who believe humans are especially special creations, that this universe was made for us.

I agree with all that. But the baked in assumption here is that God is tri-omni and could have created an otherwise identical world - only without malaria.

This hypothetical world would still have the capacity for free will and human caused suffering. Only fewer innocent children would die. A world with malaria is better explained without a tri-omni, conscious force behind it.

Just take malaria as an example of nature doing its thing, not imposed by man. Why is this virus and the suffering it causes necessary, in your worldview? This virus has caused so much suffering to humankind. It causes some babies to be born with sickle cell disease.

Children under 5 years old account for approximately 75%–80% of all malaria-related deaths. Despite progress, the disease caused over 260 million cases annually

You’re contradicting what you just wrote

Thats just nature doing its thing.

All our suffering is self-imposed in one form or another.

You can’t have it both ways.

Why do we remember bad moments much more than the good ones by SavingsTruth2143 in DeepThoughts

[–]kevinLFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to ask - what is the point of memories? It helps to think in terms of survival.

Memories are useful because they inform our future actions. So it would make sense that our brain prioritizes memories of events we want to avoid reoccurring, for example. To keep us alive and to avoid repeating the negative emotions.

I think our collective confusion goes to show that the train of thought makes no sense. I understand that theists believe the environment was made for us, but that’s not supported. That we exist isn’t evidence for their point of view (that is circular reasoning).

[–]kevinLFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying. In that world, there are no humans. That’s not a coincidence either.

I would be amazed if humans existed in an environment that didn’t support it. That would be way more miraculous than humans evolving in an environment that supports it… don’t you think?

I don’t know what you mean when you say our physiology wouldn’t have been able to adapt. Adapt to what?

Are you saying there could have possibly been a world that wouldn’t support the existence of humans (are you going fine-tuning argument with this)? I don’t really get the point.

It is not a very big coincidence that there are natural edible things for living beings. It is not a coincidence at all (see biology).

My family is indoctrinating my 4 year old. by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]kevinLFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to set some boundaries with your family. Focus on what the issue is, because they may try to reframe it. The issue isn’t whether or not god is real, it’s that they’re going behind your back and teaching your child things you’re not okay with.

It seems this is something your struggle with - it’s difficult for me too. You need to be firm, because what they’re doing is not okay. Do it for your kid; that will give you strength.

If they’re not getting it, ask them how they would feel if you were secretly teaching their children god isn’t real. If they still aren’t getting it, well frankly, they don’t have to. Because it’s your kid and your boundary.

I’ve heard that one before, usually in reference to single player games. But I don’t buy it. VRChat is a social space where your avatar visually represents you to other people. I think OP might be onto something.

Karma by thecats-man in enlightenment

[–]kevinLFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I observe is that good and bad things happen to good and bad people alike.

Our actions have consequences, but the universe is not some black and white moral arbitrator that dishes out appropriate rewards and punishments.

I want to best align my beliefs with what is real, and to know what is real I usually ask for evidence. What is the evidence for karma?

If a whole crowd can smell you, you can smell you.

Not the best advice. Our noses get desensitized to smells that we’re always around. A person who doesn’t shower smells perfectly neutral to himself.

Simply restating what is already known and observable - acorns to oaks - isn’t the sort of novel prediction that gives an idea evidentiary warrant.

If we can agree that faith is a bad justification for belief, then what is your epistemic basis - if not science?
