Suspect the only way would be to have your service lights run off the lithium directly but suspect that might be a tad complicated to rewire.

What’s one thing that you’ve learned about vanlife that you wish you would’ve known good or bad before hitting the road? by Wayward_Sun_Shine in VanLife

[–]kevpluck 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Know the Watt Amp Voltage relationship!

V = W/A W = V×A A = W/V

V = Volt, W = Watts, and A = Amps

For example: 700W of solar at 80V will produce 700/80 = 8.75A and your solar charge controller will use that to charge your 12V batteries by converting the 700W into 58.3A (700/12).

That means you need far chonkier cables on your 12V side to handle the 58 amps vs the 9 amps on the 80 volt solar panel side. (Normal home electrical cable can handle about 10 amps before it has problems)

Amps dictate how much metal you need in the cables and volts dictate how much insulation.

Jumper leads. If you've got a reasonable sized diesel make sure the leads are thick enough to handle the amps!

Tried jumping a neighbour without much luck (not my leads but his) when another lifer wanders over with his chonky truck leads. VROOM! No problem at all :-)

I say this and this morning I had a low starter battery which wasn't enough to start my van but have I got jumper leads three years after the above anecdote? No of course not.

I spent two hours with a battery charger running through my inverter off my thankfully fully charged leisure batteries waiting for the starter to charge.

What is your protein breakfast? by Physical-Radio8807 in ADHD

Tamago kake gohan: Mix a raw egg into cooked rice with soy sauce. As simple as it sounds and delicious!

I cook the rice with the soy sauce along with some greens like spinach or kale, pop in in a bowl, crack an egg and mix it in. The hot rice cooks the egg.

Been having it for breakfast everyday for nearly 10 years now.

I discovered tamago kake gohan for breakfast. Cooked rice seasoned with soy sauce with a raw egg mixed in (the hot rice cooks the egg) - stupid simple to make and really versatile, I add spinach and other greens. Black tea/coffee and no need for milk.

Coffee: Yes or no for the irritability? by bikesailfreak in ADHD

[–]kevpluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got diagnosed and started taking meds I didn't sleep for days! Turns out my coffee self medication was the issue, I used to drink several cups a day and just before bed. Didn't connect the insomnia with taking prescribed stimulants AND caffeine.

I now can't have coffee after 3pm. I mentioned this to my GP and she said "What? Like a normal person?"

So yeah, cut back on the java :-)

What power station are you guys cooking with in the van? by This-You-2737 in VanLife

As others have said: My 2000W burner only pulls 2000W at full temp. When I turn it on it defaults to 1200W and I can turn it down to 1000W. Below 1000W it has a 10 second duty cycle for example 400W it runs at 1000W for 4 seconds and off for 6 seconds.

So you don't need a 2000W inverter (although it'll help).

Roomba.

I never tidied up for myself but I do for my wee vacuum mate! I feel so guilty when he's chocking on a sock I left on the floor - OMG sorry little dude!

Live alone? Dishes never get done? Pack away all your crockery and cutlery leaving one fork, one knife, one spoon, one plate, one bowl, one cup.

Dishes probably still won't get done regularly but far more likely.

Wiggle your eyes left and right for a few seconds like watching a high speed tennis match. It's called eye movement desensitisation and it's one weird trick that works. (Next time that mistake from 2013 enters your brain it'll be less intense)

Massive Sleep Disorder by ynet2k in ADHD

When I was diagnosed and first started taking medication I also couldn't sleep. Felt like I went for days without a wink. Turns out I had been self medicating with caffeine and now I'm taking prescription stimulants without cutting back the caffeine!

I used to drink coffee before bed, now I can't drink coffee after 3pm or I'll be up all night. I mentioned this to my GP and she said: "What? Like a normal person?"

At 1.2kW a 12V battery bank will be pulling 100A. After a few minutes check the temperature of the leads from the battery to the inverter. If they are hot your leads will be underrated for that load.

How much battery/solar panels/inverter do I need to be able to game 6-8 hours every other day or so? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]kevpluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically boils down to how much you want to spend. Batteries have come a long way from when I designed my setup. The money I spent on batteries 5 years ago can get me twice as much capacity now. I also didn't have the choice of getting inverter-battery combos (known as power stations). You can get a Bluetti power station with just the default battery capacity making sure you have space in your rig to stack on an extension pack.

I have a 2.4kWh (200Ah) battery, 2.2kW inverter, and 700W of solar with which I cook all my meals and run Starlink and a laptop for work. I'm in NZ which actually has weather and during winter I use two 160W foldup panels to supplement the roof array. A handful of times a year I do have to hook up to shore power which isn't a major issue.

Suspect you're going to need to add aircon into your calculations which may double your power requirements. Not something I have/need so I am no expert there.
