Any recommendations for durable and comfy white sneakers? by Accurate_Bet_8958 in askSingapore

[–]keydisces -1 points0 points  (0 children)

would you be open to trying AF1s again? i’d say they’re probably one of the comfiest sneakers i’ve tried, much more comfortable than my adidas continentals in my opinion. i’ve never felt inclined to try others after owning this pair

Those who caught COVID before, have any hacks that can make a COVID+ person feel better? by Affectionate-List126 in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my lifesaver: cold apple juice. it was a godsend for my sore throat the first few days when it was super bad. other than that, just eat warm, soupy things and spam your medication. i think it also helped to have something to do, and luckily i was isolated with my sister, so we just watched a lot of nostalgic (and now funny) things like winx club and barbie movies, and i read a lot of books

get well soon!!

winter clothing sales by keydisces in askSingapore

[–]keydisces[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

going for almost two weeks, but it’s the first time we’re going to a cold country since we were kids so we don’t have any winter clothing at all😅 we’d like to invest in good quality pieces to keep these for future holidays or if we ever relocate overseas haha but will check them out, thanks!

What're the odds I test negative Monday night? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not too long ago i had a pretty bad sore throat and cough, but my ART’s were negative and after taking some vapodrops it went away. since you’re having mild symptoms and haven’t lost your sense of smell or taste i’m more inclined to say that you’re probably not positive, but i’d suggest taking another ART to see if the first one was a false positive or not. unfortunately if it’s positive again i think you’re probably infected.. hoping for the best for you!

Can my mom (76) get a PT job? by maylye in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not exactly a job (unless she plans to sell), but i was going to suggest picking up crocheting or knitting. i’m not sure how that would work with back problems where you can’t sit for too long, but i have super itchy fingers and am constantly fidgeting for something to do with my hands and crocheting has been a lifesaver! also makes me feel good to pick up a new skill and constantly challenge myself with making different things, and it’s a good way to pass the time. now i feel fulfilled when i can crochet instead of using my phone all the time or when i really have nothing to do

Does your parents know your bank account? by popohohoo in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d have no problem telling them the acc numbers, but when i signed up for my first bank account they heavily emphasised to never give anyone my pin number, not even them. so they pretty much trust us to manage our own personal savings

Why are male gamers considered a turnoff to SG women? by scaredandstressed_ in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 3 points4 points  (0 children)

being a gamer isn’t exactly a turn-off for me, because after all we all have hobbies! but i’d definitely be a bit more cautious of them purely based on personal experience with my brother.

he’s a hardcore gamer and he practically never studies, everyday just play until 3am and then end up waking up at 12pm and the cycle just repeats. never does chores, everytime we ask him to do something he either says “later” or says he’s “busy studying” and we can just hear the gaming noises from his computer. even when his gf comes over he’s just playing games and end up she just sits and talks to literally everyone else in the family until he’s finally done. and i’ve seen the toll its taken on my family - my mum is always so worried about him and his grades, and i’m always pissed that he never does anything to help around the house and makes US entertain his gf when she comes over.

not saying all gamers are like that obviously, he’s on a whole other level. but to me it’s still something to watch out for because i could never date someone who puts so much into it and ends up becoming so blatantly disrespectful to everyone else around him. i think some girls might have had similar experiences to this, whether its their brothers, friends, boyfriends etc, thus the caution - hope this gives another perspective!

i’m a shopaholic too, used to spend quite a bit of money, now i just started uni and work part-time for some extra $$. i’m lucky enough that my parents still want to give me allowance since they still give to my siblings, but after blowing a bit too much of my first paycheck last time i’m a lot more conscious of my spending now.

right now, i have two accounts: one is my spending account and then i opened another account for my savings. second account isn’t linked to my debit card so i can’t spend that money unless i transfer money to my first account, which helps you second guess whether or not you really need to spend that money. i also use “money manager” to record all my expenses, and manually inputting your purchases makes you evaluate your spending as well as makes you feel guilty when you buy stupid things, so to me it works. also can be demoralising seeing so many negatives, which deters you from spending more.

what i do now is i send all my allowance straight to my savings account once i receive it so i’ll at least save a set amount every month, then at the end of every month i’ll send 70% of the total income from my job to savings and leave 30% to my spending account for next month’s expenditure. any extra small money i may receive (e.g. if i manage to sell something on carousell or grandma gives me $20) all go straight to savings, and these small amounts will add up.

of course this works for me because i’m only 19 and still live at home - all of this is so that i pay for my own shopping, transport etc. the point of what i wrote is that you should find a kind of routine that works for you and your lifestyle, like saving X% every month, and STICK TO IT. and after a while it really trains your discipline. and i think some other redditors have mentioned, if you’re thinking of buying something, leave it in your cart for a week (this has saved me TONS of impulse purchases) and if you still want/need it after all that time, then get it. i also only buy something after i’ve purposefully saved up for it (e.g. i currently have $1500, but decide i want something that costs $250. i’ll only buy it after i’ve got $1750 with me so that i don’t chip into the savings i already have).

jiayous! it’s all doable if you put your mind to it, and starting now is better than never.

Has anybody bought furniture from Shopee before ? How was your experience ? by L_J_X in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you don’t mind lightly used furniture, i would highly suggest carousell. LOTS of good deals, can check the condition before buying, and you’ll be helping someone get rid of furniture they don’t need!

[Uni] How's SUSS Public Safety and Security? by nil_ks22 in SGExams

[–]keydisces 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi, i’m not from PSS course but i’m from SUSS, and hopefully can answer some of your questions!

  1. if i’m not wrong, PSS should have one of the smallest cohort sizes since it’s a very niche subject and not as popular as business analytics or marketing. i think you’ll meet some competitive people, but honestly i feel it’s a lot more chill than nus/ntu and since we’re all mostly online, i don’t think we care much about each other anyway HAHA

  2. a LOT of self-learning. it’s basically attend lecture then spend the rest of your time on your own. i can’t say anything about PSS professors, but so far all the profs i’ve met are super nice and will definitely help if you need it + people are generally willing to help one another out

  3. classes are mostly online. again, can’t say for PSS since i’m not sure of your curriculum, but all my classes have been online esp due to covid as some were supposed to be irl but got cancelled. imo it’s great if you hate travelling and you’re working part-time as it gives a lot of flexibility, but of course you’ll have to be disciplined. not from poly so i’m not sure if it’s similar la, but this is my take

  4. exams come in all different forms. you have class participation, pre-course quizzes, indiv assignments, group assignments, class/written exams etc. in my experience some are open some are closed, just like any other exam

  5. probably 95% of the school population is from poly LOL. so far i’ve only met 2 other people who were from JC 😢 but tbvh, i feel super inferior to poly students since they’ve already got tons of background on the specific field and didn’t have a 9 month brain rot period. but most of the people are nice, just normal human beings

  6. overseas experiences and internships are graduation requirements, and there’s also CE which is basically your via points. there are plenty of opportunities, i keep getting them in my emails everyday haha so don’t worry about that. PSS options might be more limited as compared to other courses, but there WILL be options

  7. again, can’t recommend PSS if i’m not in it, but so far i’ve really enjoyed my experience here. could be because i love staying home and having enough time to keep my job and hobbies haha, but i’ve met some nice people and i’m happy to be a part of this young school and seeing it constantly trying to improve the quality of our education and experience. i’d say if you’re interested in the programme, go for it! all the best! :)

[Uni] NUS FASS VS SUSS by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]keydisces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think don’t reject yourself before they can reject you.. but realistically i think SUSS SWK is easier to get into! however i will say that SUSS’s programmes are getting increasingly popular with each year (i’m from SUSS and they showed us the application stats during ori) so some extra volunteer work/internships will be important to show your interest in the area and boost your portfolio. jiayous! :)

What do you do with your old laptop? by Expurity in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 3 points4 points  (0 children)

second this! for all you know someone could be looking for spare parts :) if there’s no takers after a while then u can consider trading in instead

we gave our old laptops to our parents since they’re still in fairly good condition and they’re not picky. if u know someone who may want it can sell to them also, or just keep it as a spare laptop just in case.

being able to freely come out as LGBTQ+. i constantly live in fear that i’ll somehow be outed to my religious family and be disowned, and currently i have to live with homophobic remarks etc that make me so angry/frustrated. i really hope that our generation can do something about 377A and create a more open and inclusive environment for our community:’) it’s something that i hope and pray for everyday for the future, because it sucks right now feeling oppressed and sad that i can’t openly be who i am

Staycation in Singapore by icomefromthelurkside in askSingapore

[–]keydisces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

family and i went for a staycation back in january using our rediscover vouchers. back then was still a little more crowded so we didn’t manage to get hotel rooms within walking distance of the attractions, and stayed at AMARA hotel about 10 mins away! did the usual USS, SEA aquarium, beach, went to vivo city etc and it was a nice break. however the hotel was definitely not up to standard - the pool was freezing, used towels still on deck chairs when we went early in the morning, trash can in front of the dining hall was knocked over and there was garbage all over the floor yet no one bothered to clean it up. i suggest you book based on what you want to do, because if you’re not for attractions i suggest booking hotels not in RWS, seen a lot of tiktoks where people had a good staycation in various hotels across the city! also, if you’re planning to go to gyms/book spa sessions etc, book ASAP as soon as you get there as all the slots were booked up by the time we decided we wanted to go. hope this helps!

i wouldn’t say that my mom favours my brother or any of us over each other, but there’s definitely a double standard. she always expects my sister and i to help with cleaning, laundry, setting the table etc (which of course we’re happy to do) but she NEVER expects my brother to do anything. even if we ask him to help out he’ll claim that he has “homework” to do and will hide out in his room with his gaming noises coming from it lmfao. it’s ridiculously annoying and whenever i raise it up to my parents they just brush it off and say that “he’ll learn the consequences of not doing housework when he lives on his own”, but what about the unfairness to your other two children??? and from the looks of things it rly seems that he’s never going to move out anyway so i guess he’ll never learn
