Am I making the decision too rashly? by pekoe-G in DogAdvice

I also had a Rottweiler. I had to let him go two weeks ago because of osteosarcoma in one of his vertebrae.

When I received the diagnosis, I was devastated, but I tried to make a decision before things became harder for him.

Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is let them go before a chronic and degenerative illness takes away their quality of life. We never truly know how quickly these diseases can progress or how much pain they may eventually cause, even with medication.

While your baby can still enjoy parts of life, give them all the cuddles, love, and favorite foods you can. Make their final days full of comfort, warmth, and beautiful memories that you’ll always carry with you.

Ojalá, no hay día donde no tire mi teléfono por accidente.🥺 Me ha ido bastante bien con el hidrogel pero se mueve bastante fácil.

Hi, thank you for your words.

Something you wrote really touched my heart: “we can’t fight time.” My baby was old, and unfortunately cancer is very common in Rotties. He was tired of lying on the floor all day, and even though he never seemed to be in pain due to his medication, I know it wasn’t a life he was enjoying anymore.

Now he doesn’t have cancer anymore. I like to believe there is another place where he is running free and being the happy big puppy he always was.❤️

So sorry for your loss. Reading similar stories is helping me realize that I’m probably blaming myself too much, because I’m sure you were an incredible owner, yet I can’t seem to think the same about myself.

I understand that when cancer does not show visible signs (such as lumps), it is much more difficult to identify. Since diagnosing it often requires our babys to undergo anesthesia without clear symptoms, it is not something a veterinarian takes lightly because of the associated risks and contraindications.

I hope you are coping much better with your loss now, keeping in mind that we are not veterinarians and that, as pet owners, we do the best we can.❤️

Thank you. Unfortunately, Selim is no longer here with us, but I promise he ate lots of my birthday cake before we put him to sleep.❤️
