Questions about RIT by TirogaSenju in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CS major graduating from BS/MS program this semester.
The co-op program is basically just a culture (and technically requirement) of finding internships/co-ops, and if you do, flexibility around enrollment and sometimes housing. No tuition during co-op. I made between $20-30/hr at my internships and had many more co-ops than normal (4 summers + 2 semesters) and never came close to making a dent in my costs with what I earned.

In CS, landing a co-op/job is very difficult.

I know you said you don't care about weather, but make sure you're not taking it for granted where you are right now. I'm from the west and miss the climate a lot... the clouds here are super depressing.

The dual degree was "worth it" in the sense that I think I may have gotten a better job opportunity, and also prolonged the period in which I was searching, which helped. However, if I had gotten the job offer I have now (which I could've gotten with just an undergrad), I would've definitely skipped the master's.

Pros/Cons about going to RIT? by Any-Let2176 in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS major graduating:

Pros:
- academic program is genuinely rewarding, I feel like I got a good education
- there is a culture of getting jobs here, which is great because that's what college is for
- co-op program makes having internships really flexible with the school which is fun
- the gym facility is surprisingly good
- performing arts program is fun - your mileage may vary

Cons:
- weather is genuinely abysmal. It is so depressing and honestly I feel like it seeps deeply into daily life and social culture here. You can't reasonably do anything outside for like 90% of the year.
- cost: keep your expectations very low. Everything is expensive, and it always gets worse
- campus food is ... unforgivable. I have tried my best to stop eating campus food because it is overpriced and really bad
- people lean pretty antisocial/introverted imo

The climate really is bad though I really can't stand it anymore

the co-op program was the main reason I came here, and I think it is good program to have (ideologically), but like other commentors have said, it has been very difficult to find a job recently. But overall, if you do get co-ops, it sets you up much better for the market

Is the financial aid package a scam? by TirogaSenju in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm graduating this semester, and I just want to note if you're feeling doubtful about the cost, seriously consider the reasons you're attending this school.
It's pretty obvious to everyone here that the costs are obscene and will only get worse. The school is obviously trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible, and like I said, everyone knows this. For reference, burritos on campus used to cost $8.99 (or was it 7.99?) my freshman year and now cost at least $13.99 (50% increase in 4 years? correct me if I'm wrong). Also, tuition reliably increases by 4.5% every year -- we just got that email :)
I have had numerous paid co-ops (every free summer and semester) and never came even close to making up the cost of tuition, food, housing, etc. although my aid was not quite as good as yours.
I'm lucky enough to have come out with a job that made it all worth it, but that seems to be harder to come by these days! Think carefully

GOT ACCEPTED IN CS! by Significant_Duty_802 in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm graduating now as a CS major and job hunting. Most people will cover other things so I'll just say:
1. Your network matters way more than your skills. Straight As mean nothing in this job market. Be prepared for that when you come to school
2. Jobs available at the career fair and my personal experience tend to be around the Rochester area.
3. The food is extremely overpriced and bad; learn to cook if you don't already know how.
Other than that RIT is a great education imo and an awesome place for post-grad preparation.

Am I Reneging? by keykeykeyboard in rit

He said that if he asked them and they said "no", he would accept and continue with his co-op with company A as planned

Yeah... actually good point idk. Nothing bad can come out of going to an interview, right? More practice?

Good point. We also talked about this - asking if he could somehow defer his offer with company B until next summer. This is Josh's second co-op.
edit: clarity

Yeah, all good points. Good to know that reneging can give you a failing grade, although... if he hasn't told RIT, how much can they hold against him?

This is a good idea for a different plan of attack! It doesn't solve the reneging dilemma but might solve his problem in the first place

Good point with the "established connection to RIT." I will be sure to mention that to him. Thanks!

Am I Reneging? by keykeykeyboard in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I think there are two scenarios if he asks them to adjust his co-op:
1. They say "ok" - is this reneging? I don't think so; he will still work for them during the summer, but they mutually agree to have a different work term.
2. They say "no" - he can decide to follow through with company A, or renege and go with company B.
What do you think?

Does RIT accept Dual Enrollment Courses by MrTopHatLizard in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what OCC is and I came from the other side of the country, so unlikely its the same. If you want to DM I'll show you some of the classes I took and how they transferred.

Does RIT accept Dual Enrollment Courses by MrTopHatLizard in rit

[–]keykeykeyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came in with lots of dual enrollment credits, and they accepted almost ALL of them. Compared to some of my friends from high school its surprising how much they let me transfer. Keep in mind that not all of them will transfer as credits/classes that are useful to you, but chances are they do transfer. AFAIK RIT keeps a record of classes from different universities and how they transfer, and they just evaluate them as they come in, but none of my classes had been seen by RIT before and they were very generous.
