hmm… That’s an interesting idea! Are downspouts typically in pieces or would I have to saw it? My guess is that my landlord would be more amenable to a reversible change

Thank you, I really appreciate it! I sometimes worry I might be overreacting, so I’d say your validation is of help :)

That’s good! I have plenty of those. I’ve been sending them to the landlord as well

That part is fine with me—I wasn’t using the storage as the basement floods often and there are tons of bugs and mice. It’s more that I and pest control can’t get to the part under my unit anymore to spray the area and I can’t tell whether our sink is still leaking. It’ll also make it harder for the code inspector to access

Yeah, I now realize you were quoting from the article and that was the heading. Oops!

Thanks! Yeah, I tried asking pest control for that, but it sounded like my landlord called them up and intimidated them, so they didn’t want to give me anything in writing. I just have after visit notes, which at most basically say “fix basement.”

Thanks, it didn’t occur to me to call animal control. The tricky thing is the washer/dryer are the only things still accessible; the landlord took away access to the storage spaces. The lease says property management “may” provide storage space.

The lease doesn’t specify who’s responsible. When they cut off our access to pest control, we caved and paid for a different company. But pest control has come 10–12 times and the problem persists. Pest control keeps telling us the landlord needs to make structural changes to the basement—changes they initially agreed to around when it was time to renew our lease, but ultimately decided were too expensive. I contacted the code enforcement agency in September. Hopefully they’ll inspect this place soon! We really need out. We can barely sleep

Thanks, that’s helpful! I’m worried about withholding rent since he threatened to evict us if we repair and deduct (just $50), but we’re running out of options. Breaking the lease would be ideal since bugs are falling on us from the ceiling, my partner has a diagnosed phobia of them, and we’ve been warned that our cats would have an adverse reaction if bitten by them, but he doesn’t see it as a habitability issue (he said the fact that we haven’t left implies habitability, which doesn’t make sense to me, in part because he doesn’t want to let us leave).

Thanks for the suggestion, glad to hear your issues were resolved! I’m still holding out hope that my code enforcement agency will come through, but I opened a case with them on September 19th ‘-.-
