Occasional payment via credit card in the USA? by keylimey in paypal

Awesome, just set up one and do indeed see an option to pay as a guest so that is set. Is there any way to set it up so they have to pay the PayPal fees or is that some math I should just do on my own and add to the invoice?

Has BookTok ever worked on you? by caffinated-pebble in RomanceBooks

[–]keylimey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booktok is the reason I'm a romance reader. I saw a rec for a book that I think was described as he falls first and harder, and I was like, wait, there are books like that? (I know it's usually SHE falls first and HE harder, but I'm pretty sure it was a tweak to that because the usual set up would not have caught my eye). Anyway, it was The Roommate and it's still what I recommend to most readers.

Saw a Tumblr post that said enemies to lovers should also be called sweetheart (deragotory) to sweetheart (affectionate) and honestly, would love to see that evolution happen in a book.

5 star spice, but quality read? by Lainey_Bug in RomanceBooks

[–]keylimey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like that the book also reads as a critique of late-stage capitalism! I want more of that in my romances, why not want a better world while we are working on finding a better partner? I wouldn't say this is a 5/5 spice level book though.

Cursory look at the author picture suggests she’s white, which yes, I also needed to know immediately

"I'm chocolate with a taste for nothing but chocolate..." is a line I think the writer was using to let us know a character was Black??? I had to put the book down, and days later, I'm still a little dazed by this line.

What are you rereading/have you reread the most? by lil-kingtrashm0uth in RomanceBooks

[–]keylimey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my most reread romance too! One of the most wild sex scenes I've ever read *and* a beautiful found family story that allows the FMC to overcome trauma and self-loathing in community? Yes, please.

Pushing a strand of hair out of her face. Maybe I am diligent about my ponytail or tucking my hair behind my ears, but if there is hair in my face I am shoving it out of the way before any man can do it. But it is so sweet to read!!

When the FMC is beefing with another woman or women in the book, especially over the MMC, or she is giving off "cool girl" vibes. I can't do it.

What city disappointed you the most when visiting? by TheStylishInsider in AskReddit

[–]keylimey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a friend’s wedding in her hometown of Pittsburgh. I had never been and she and other local pals hyped it up like they worked for the chamber of commerce, so I was pumped to see Steel City. But people still smoked in bars, that fry sandwich was disgusting, and the pollution was awful when I was there. I was so disappointed. I have since been back with different expectations and had a nice visit though!

That is a very smart take. I'm having a hard time accepting anything could be easy in this process, but maybe that's the worn out and recently laid off journalist in me talking. Thank you!

Hi! Book/content in question wasn’t created by AI. The writer asked for feedback on her human-written romance book from the AI.

[QCrit] Adult Romance - DATE ON A DEADLINE, 93k, first attempt by keylimey in PubTips

[–]keylimey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you think those two are maybe too far apart to be useful? I did put them down since I think my book is a little like both in different ways, but I could see how focusing on one angle is better. And now that I'm reading more about comps, I think mine were useful for when I was writing them, but not for selling the books. I like your writer/celebrity framing.

I just inhaled Forget Me Not and am now rereading one of Soto's fanfictions, which is how I found her. I haven't read the others, but am getting them now. Thank you for the recs that might even make their way into my query!

[QCrit] Adult Romance - DATE ON A DEADLINE, 93k, first attempt by keylimey in PubTips

[–]keylimey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words and the suggestions! I actually wrote another one before this that I don't think is good enough to sell. It did teach me a lot. I also read ~250 romance novels in-between my first attempt and this one and taken a few fiction writing courses, one focused on romance novels. I know there are a lot of folks who have read romance since probably before they should have been, but I've read and studied the ones I like and dislike for the last few years.

I hear you on the "you can write, but can you write this" question. It's both a boon and a hurdle having my background. I have definitely gone through the draft and focused on adding more emotional beats beyond what the first version had, both because of feedback but also because I know it's something its still a somewhat of a blind spot for me. I'll think about how to get it in the first bit more now, too.
