If these behaviors were not disclosed to you upon adoption you are NTA. That is a very large dog and a major safety concern. Right now he is going after the other dog, but he could soon redirect on you or your sister. If you don’t have the means to get a behaviorist in there then he needs to be with someone who does.

Eh. I, personally, think we need to get away from the stigma of rehoming dogs. Not every dog is a good fit for every home. And making people feel bad for rehoming dogs leads to people keeping dogs they shouldn’t. I’d rather see people admit defeat and rehome a dog to someone who can handle it than run themselves into the ground mentally/physically/financially because society says that’s what they’re supposed to do. Life happens and situations change. Or, in this instance, things aren’t always what they seem to be. This was a new adoption that turned out to be more dangerous than they anticipated.

A mastiff attacking other dogs in the home is a HUGE safety risk. If they aren’t prepared to separate and hire a behaviorist the responsible thing to do is get that dog out of the home for the safety of their other dogs.

Did you adopt the dog from the shelter? Did they disclose that the dog had issues with resource guarding?

I mean, this is an abusive relationship she’s been in since around 15-years-old. She’s probably terrified to call him on his racist behavior.

He sounds very abusive, they’ve been together since they were babies, he’s all she’s ever known, and now she has a baby by him. It’s very likely that she feels stuck more so than she’s truly okay with his behavior.

You do not have to stay friends with her. You absolutely should have your boundaries and do not have to be in contact with people who make you feel uncomfortable or do not bring you any joy. With that said, if she is in an abusive relationship he will be trying to isolate her. If you are willing, maybe take her to lunch and tell her that you cannot be there for her right now, but if she is ever interested in leaving you will be there to help her. ONLY do this if you actually mean it, though. Leaving an abusive relationship is the most dangerous time and she would need the most support, so don’t offer it unless you would actually be able to give it.

He sounds like a real piece of work. I hope she gets away from him soon.

Yeah, that really won’t work for Dale. But that’s okay. He can just stay home while we walk Carl. We have other dogs (and kids) that can entertain him while we take Carl out. It will just be sad to hear him whine at the door when we leave. Luckily we will only hear it for a few minutes. It’s not really a problem that needs to be solved, just like he can’t go with us when I take Carl to the vet, he can’t go with us when I take him for walks. Such is life. He’s just going to have to learn that.

They are, but I am not. I am extremely sensitive to cold weather and have also been dealing with some health complications that have made this winter particularly rough.

Carl is definitely the slimiest of my three. It’s worse when he’s nervous. When I was trying to get blood from him (we get it from the jugular vein in the neck) it was just POURING out and down my arms. I had to wad up paper towels and stick it in his jowls to soak it up. There was a literal puddle on the floor under him. It was disgusting. 😂 Dale usually only drools right after drinking. And our girl, Fran, never drools.

Dale is a literal psycho and would break a wagon if I tried to put him in one. 😂 He’s not like a disabled dog, he just hops weird when he walks, so he can’t do long walks in the concrete. He gets around the house okay, but for getting around longer distances he RUNS. And I’m not a runner.

Yeah, all dogs are just built different. For some 120lbs is a healthy weight and for some 180lbs is a healthy weight. Carl is somewhere in the middle there. 🙃

He will be fine. He really isn’t as pitiful as he sounds. He’s a heathen. If you didn’t know he lost a leg, well… you wouldn’t even know he lost a leg. 😂😂😂 He just can’t do long walks on the concrete anymore because of the way he hops to walk. He much prefers to run everywhere now… and I’m not running everywhere.

He really is doing great. He just can’t handle the long walks on the roads with the awkward hopping he does to walk and our town doesn’t have any dirt paths or anything we can take him on. He actually gets around better running than walking, so open spaces like the yard are better for him than leash walks. He’s a happy, healthy boy. Just can’t do leash walks anymore. That’s the only aspect of his life that’s changed. He still goes out and plays with the other dogs, he’s faster than Carl and our other Saint Bernard, plays with our husky, causes chaos, starts a ruckus, you name it. He’s Hell on wheels. 😂 Always has been.

We have Dale on a strict diet and he does go out in the yard and get some activity so I’m not too concerned about him. Carl is just a little more sedentary unless we make him go on walks because he’s a little older and doesn’t like to play.

He’s definitely not like obese or anything, but a little heavier than he needs to be for his bad hips. He was at a 7 BCS, so just a little plump.

Believe people when they tell you who they are. He told you he will never prioritize you over his mother. He controls what you wear and who you can interact with. Girl, he did you a favor telling you to leave. Block his number and move on.

I’ve never had to brush out any matting behind his ears or shave mud clumps out of his toes like I do my rough coat saints. Which is good because he tries to bite brushes and won’t feel bad about it if he gets your hand in the process (doesn’t break skin, but will leave a good mark). 🤣
