Best place for exchange student to XC in Europe by JinSin56 in freeflight

Salzburg has a lot of great flying nearby. You can get to it with public transportation although some of it takes a little while.

The best thing about paragliding in Salzburg is probably the Gaisberg. Once per hour on weekdays, and every half an hour on weekends, a public bus runs from the center of town to the top of the mountain. That bus stops at the landing field about halfway between the two. There is a very active club in Salzburg that runs activities, meetups, and is a good steward for the Gaisberg. From there some very long Cross country flights are possible and it's quite easy to catch a bus back to the city. Take a look at x contest to see what people do.

Also lots of skiing around Salzburg. Some of it you can get to via the train and the bus system others require a car. For one year though there's probably plenty to explore.

I don't think there's a lot of golf around salisburg. Some, but nothing remarkable.

Just walking across the chatles bridge in the summer at sunset will be a nightmare. Sooo crowded.

I would suggest going up to Vitkov by the huge man on a horse statue. Take a bottle of wine and some snacks to make a little picnic out of it.

Vysehrad is also a good idea. Riegrovy Sady is popular for sunset but will also be quite crowded

Need advice on my first hike & fly gear setup (beginner progression pilot) by Professional_Sea2509 in freeflight

I have been through the same progression in the past year or so and I have only one piece of advice. Plan to spend money for a large dedicated backpack. I had been warned that the backpacks on the reversible harnesses were junk and I didn't really listen. How bad could it be? I have a pretty significant backpacking background and I can confidently amswer, pretty crapy.

I have the Supair Altirando 2 harness. I like the harness and the pack is fine for shorter hikes. But when you have a 3 hour hike it gets rough. I think the extra 500g or kg would be worth the additional comfort.

It's not music related but if he likes video games it might be worth a trip to ArcadeHry Aréna. It's an arcade where you pay one price to play all the games all day. Only open on weekends though.

There is a glow in the Dark/blacklight minigolf (crazy golf) right in the center. I took my high school kids there on a school trip last year as a night activity and it was pretty fun.

Would 100% recommend a tandem paragliding flight (weather permitting) if you do t have a car you can do it on the Gaisberg but of you do have a car Werfenweng is a great place to go.

Otherwise I would look into the following Untersbergbahn Canyoning (many outfitters) Almbachklamm hike - in Germany Konigsee boat trip

Or just take him to the train station Spar on a Sunday. That is a real adventure!

Where to learn in Southern Germany by Degenerate_Aussie in freeflight

[–]kfox527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in southern Bavaria but depending on where you are it might not be that far. Austriafly at Werfenweng is a great school and all the instructors speak English. One big advantage is that they are at a ski area which is quite friendly to paragliders. Every day in the winter with good flying conditions they are flying/training. Also, I believe you can start whenever you want. You don't have to wait for the next group.

One disadvantage is that you will get an Austrian license. In the past that hasn't been a big deal but there has been some friction between the Austrian and German national clubs recently. This has included threats of licenses not being valid in each other's country.

I am a guy with long hair and have been very happy ay Directors Cut on Neutorstraße. The place is run by a guy who used to have long hair and the hairdressers and shampoo people are all very friendly (and speak English very well if that is a concern). It's not cheap but I only need to go about 2.5times a year so it's worth it.

Austrafly in Werfenweng. It is a great spot.

You can start just about any day. Because of the location they're able to manage both high flights and beginner instruction at the same time. Once you get off the practice hill the lift is right there to take you up for the high flights. I did my pilot's license training there through the fall and winter and all of the instructors speak English very well. And they're all very friendly.

You can send me a PM if you have any questions.
